DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Ores on Embark Screen

Those screenshots are from earlier versions, I think you have to use other programs to check now.

There might be undead. Butcher something and see what happens. If no skins animate themselves to murder your tanners, you should be fine.

If there's any sort of evil rain/cloud, you might have undead created in that form.

303
I'm using gold hammerheads because I have a huge amount of gold, hundreds of bars compared to other metals. You can only make hammerheads out of gold. It's not an ideal metal, but since it's dense, it should've been decent as a blunt weapon.

Been enjoying this mod (probably a little too much, since there are a lot of things I really should be doing instead), run into a few problems (NOTE: I'm avoiding looking at the raws to prevent spoilers):
Hammerhead javelins are useless- I've got golden javelins fired from exceptional throwers being deflected consistently by bog troll's cloth armor. When they do hit, they can actually send the troll flying a tile or two back, which is pretty cool. I suggest reducing contact area.
There are no traitor dwarves, or at least they're really rare (or, my watchers aren't detecting them at all).
A friendly dwarf popped up (not under my control) in a recent migrant wave. Is this a problem with the "traitor"s, or was it a werecreature in disguise? (Either way, it was murdered by the merchants, yet I still had to bury it)
Foundries only produce one block, not four. You probably forgot to update this from the older version where stones would always drop (with a legendary miner, at least) instead of 25% of the time.

Well that was interesting. I think I just realized that toady may be living my dream lifestyle... :c

Toady and I laugh the same way! I don't think it's a very healthy way of laughing.

5) HAPPINESS. Eventually, you will have extra dwarves. Use these dwarves to SMOOTH and ENGRAVE everything. Mine out tons of bedrooms.  Cut down on tantrum spirals by limiting dwarves interactions with another. Keep them busy; put all dwarves on a regular military rotation.
Is smoothing out everything in your fort really good advice?
Whenever I try to it seems to waste time that I could spend on more important things.

You must micromanage your dwarves, because I always have about 30 extra that I have no idea what to do with. I use Dwarf Therapist to turn on "stone detailing" on all my idle dwarves and let them have at it.
Wasn't there a glitch that caused mass stone detailing to lag to game?

If you have a bunch of idlers that're suddenly told to do something, the pathing will cause lag.

Didn't you just compare giving yourself one of (if not the) best materials in the game to giving more of easily available resources as a reason for balancing...?

Finally tried legends of forlorn realms. Let's try a pure-underground fort...

... Devourers of the depths. Holy fuck.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The earring has been missing for a week.
« on: October 22, 2012, 02:53:16 pm »
I checked the materials, nothing changed. They just wait there for a while before building.

EDIT: And to clarify, this is BEFORE I'm told they start the mysterious construction.
EDIT2: Reloaded to test something, didn't realize I forgot to save before. This time, the planter went insane instead. :c

Looks like engraving would work. I guess I'm still used to older versions without the whole "missing for a week" thing.

Is anyone else having a problem where a moody dwarf won't start construction of an artifact for a while after all materials are gathered?

DF Gameplay Questions / The earring has been missing for a week.
« on: October 22, 2012, 02:04:08 pm »
Alright. So my planter was unhappy for a long time so one day she decided to go fell but since she was carrying a baby on her back she took the baby to create an earring out of but now it says the baby has been missing for a week and since the baby corpse is now an earring I don't know what to do since I don't want to wait until a ghost pops up my dwarves might get pissed and tantrum spiral or something and nobody seems to realize that the earring is the baby also it's kinda funny that the mother is happy.

tl;dr Fell mood, dwarf kills own child, child is now reported "Missing for a week" despite child-bone earring sitting in the butcher's shop. What should I do? D:

EDIT: While I'm asking questions, I might as well know this for future incidents with fireballs:
If nobody witnesses the incineration of a dwarf, how do I put it to rest before a ghost appears?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: OH GOD A FIRE BREATHING STEEL TITAN

Steel titans are basically immortal. Maybe you could try getting lucky with adamantine equipment, but iron probably won't do anything to it.

Might as well go all the way and install floodgates absolutely friggin' everywhere to be safe. Just make sure you label them...

I mean, with a pair of dwarves training 24/7, they used to reach legendary within a few months. Does this still work? I remember being able to survive fortress defense up to giant spiders with wooden training weapons and no armor.

Unless this has been fixed in the latest version, why not just train your dwarves in squads of two and laugh as 2-6 dwarves destroy sieges with wooden weapons?
