I read a sotry about a Finnish man who had converted to Islam (post-9/11) and who was en route to America on a plane to see his relatives... he was arrested at the airport, interrogated, and eventually he was turned back to Finland with a hostile farewell: "I don't want to see you in America ever again" despite nothing incriminating being found.

It could've been exaggerated though, but that's just... crazy.

There was an Australian video blogger (not a Muslim or anything) arrested on a trip to the USA, they were like "Why do you have a video camera? Why are you filming your trip?". They interrogated him and he explained being a vlogger etc, and filming his journey for his vlog on youtube, they didn't "get it" so he's now on a watch list, never made it out of the airport in the USA (they brought in homeland security to interrogate him and everything) and he's banned from travelling to the USA ever again.

So the paranoia might not just be Muslims. It's everyone.

On "The Chaser" political comedy show in Australia, they took photos at a tourist location, first dressed as an American tourist (no police reaction), and then the same guy came back and took the same photos dressed as an Arab Sheik. They detained him within minutes that time. There were no visible cops etc, but there was CCTV, it was the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or something.

The moral of the story: Terrorists should dress up in American Flag Regalia (US flag t-shirts, caps etc) when planning attacks.

I'd say the friend gushing over a newly-discovered favorite franchise is fairly common phenomena, going back decades with movies bands etc.

"I love ponies! Do you love ponies! What you don't love ponies?!? Surely if I tell you about the ponies some more you'll love them too!"

Several factors could be relevant - cognitive dissonance, really believing you're spreading the joy, as well as affirmation of the love he's feeling for the series, and (sub?)concious desire to have those feelings reflected back from others. He needs a Pony Club to hang/chat with, lacking this he's trying to create converts out of readily available individuals.

If symptoms persist > a few weeks, then it's a problem.

If it was his own private space or something, and it was actually necessary to physically force the other person out, I can kind of understand that... but again, that's an incredibly rare situation and not the sort that was relevant to discussion.

I had an ex refuse to leave my house, she jammed herself in my front door (she had broken up with me / kicked me out, then kept coming to my new house, screaming, crying etc, refusing to leave when asked, while hurling abuse at me). I wouldn't let her in that time, asked her to leave, while she's shrieking and trying to force her way into the house while and hurling abuse at me.

So this is not so unusual. Basically if you make the mistake of letting someone into your house who fits the "stalker" description.

Generally I think they get media nicknames based on what's most easily recognizable / differentiable

E.g.

Rush Limbaugh => "Rush"
Glenn Beck => "Beck"
Condoleeza Rice => Condi (because "Rice" is just to ambiguous)

[...]When taking the "evolutionary gender psychology approach", we both decided it was because if you say RUN while hunting for tigers, the men who say "don't order me around who do you think you are ordering me around I'm sick and tired of it and you don't have the right to" get eaten by tigers. I'll repeat that: eaten by tigers, just because it sounds awesome.

Nope, I've had males react the same way. "Do it like this" => "I'll do the opposite to what you recommend JUST BECAUSE". Personally this has been in my experience mainly with Info Tech stuff, and male computer noobs.

Female computer noobs have been more likely to actually follow the steps in my experience.

People giving her shit for spending money on makeup (hint: this is what is expected of women by society; the shit is expensive, and it's generally kind of necessary).  Calling her the "queen of rage" along with extremely unflattering photos that, unsurprisingly, make her look possessed.

That picture of Bachmann eating the sausage reminds me of Sarah Palin getting ridiculed for eating a piece of Pizza in public with a knife and fork. Can't really win, can you?

Bachmann maybe should have used a knife and fork. Maybe smarter to get the soon-forgotten written criticisms than permanent photos of yourself gorging on food like that?

As for Just War, at least in the WWII context (the most common cited Just War of modern days) ... the wealthy elite of USA funded the Nazi's and Japanese war machines, even as atrocities were being carried out.

It's the working class of both sides who are asked to sacrifice financially, sacrifice their lives and liberty, while the guys who profited on building up those enemies demand more profits or they won't lift a finger to help in the war.

Japan : Rape of Nanking etc: USA happy to keep funding war in China. peaceful occupation of Vietnam by the Japanese, at the invite of the French Colonials, was written up in the US press as a violent invasion (outright lying). It was only when the Japanese threatened US nationalist supremacy in the pacific that the USA suddenly started to care. Mass Murder in China was OK because we decided that was Japans allowable "Zone of Influence"

I read about a child being beaten to death over several hours by her own adoptive parents in the progressive rage thread. It made me sick, literally. Its this sort of shit that helped lead to my depression. I honestly wish I could become more detached from the world around me, as bad as that sounds.

There's 7+ billion people in the world and they are having every possible experience right now from the happiest to the saddest. The broadcast media highlights the saddest tales from around the world in realtime. You can be reading nothing but sad tales continuously if you want to.

Part of the problem is we evolved to live in fairly small close knit family groups of maybe 40-200 people, where you knew everyone and could influence things that you knew were going on. This is what our empathy / social wiring is built to cope with. With worldwide mass media and especially the internet you can know about many things which you can do nothing about, leaving you with the knowledge but no power to affect what you've heard about. This could leave you with a feeling of helplessness.

This would be a case where an adaptive trait (high empathy) becomes maladaptive due to a change in the environment (knowledge of all the problems in the world).

Also multiple Dr Who bots, Death Star mobile toaster-thing, Cylon and Muffy the Robot dog (or whatever it was called) from the original Galactica series. Maximillian and the flying comic-relief robot from Black Hole. Kryten + Skutter from Red Dwarf. And 2 x service droids from Silent Running. Cool :)

puts only takes a single argument, you're passing two arguments. So, use printf or cout. (the error messages tell you the expected arguments for any function you're calling, in this case: const char *) printf takes variable numbers of arguments, but this behavior is rare in c++, cout uses stream operators, so it takes variable number of inputs as well

you can send multiple stuff to puts, but you have to concatenate the strings manually first then ensure they're caste to the type "const char *" from "char *" or "string". Basically it's a waste of time to do it this way

As for LCS, I tend to lose interest around the recruitment phase, when I've spent 20 minutes in one turn at a location trying to find the job I want.

Sounds like fun now i've got the bandwidth for this kind of thing. Me and a buddy used to love "Thundering Mantis" (mainly coz of the bad dub though, but the fights and finale rock) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087145/

My other fave from that era is Shogun Assassin

Yah I love that book, it's semi-autobiographical, you know. Vonnegut's WWII experiences play a part.
