DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Evil Mason?
« on: August 23, 2011, 12:01:22 pm »
Any dwarf who designs images at one point or another in their workday is likely to create one of somebody in the fortress (I think it's more likely if they have a grudge against them) being surrounded by vermin that they detest.
It is, indeed, a laugh-worthy feature.

Interesting update.
While taking care of other chores in the fortress due to my near-certainty that the mood was going to fail, I noticed a dorf cleaning up a bloody mess from troglodyte genocide in the cavern and so decided to build a well in the water to give him quicker access. Upon making the stone block at the mason's workshop, my moody fellow ran to it, took it and grabbed a random gem and started building.

I suppose he needed both rock and metal bars. ???

EDIT: And it's a toy axe.
Woo.

Gems are an issue during moods. Sometimes they just don't accept what you have. Might only take his preference.

Does he have anything else he wants? If something else is on his "list" above it, he won't get the gem until the above is obtained.
Whoa, double ninja'd on that one.
The only other things he wanted were leather and metal. He has both, and I have a surplus of them as well.
I suppose he's screwed. D:

Are there any burrows? Are the gems forbidden? Is there access to them?
No burrows, and the gems are unforbidden and less than 5 steps away from the metalsmith's forge.

He says "rough... color".
Glass is "raw... green", "raw... clear" or "raw... crystal".

One of my dorfs is possessed and demands rough gems. I have plenty, but he doesn't seem to want them. Is it possible that he'll only take the type he has a preference for?
In this case, those would be pipe opals, and I can't find them anywhere on my map. :<

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: In the Absence of a Dungeon Master...

I believe you can mod in the dungeon master by doing something with the [APPOINTED_BY] or something-similar fields in the raws (this I have not done), but, upon getting one, they evidently still don't allow taming of PET_EXOTIC creatures.  Removing _EXOTIC from each creature, leaving only [PET], should work.  Did you change the raws in the save directory or in the main DF folder?  The ones in the main folder pertain to new world gens, while your data\save\region# will contain the raw files the are actually used in that game.  Are the creatures not listed at all when you try to add a task to your kennels with {m} to Tame Large Animal or whatever?

Ahh, I didn't know I had to modify the ones in the actual save folder for it to affect current worlds. Thanks for that, that would probably explain it. :)

Actually, designating vermin to a cage seems to do the trick (I didn't think that was possible, but I'm glad to be proven wrong).
However, the untamed ones don't show up on the Animals status screen as "live x" either way, so I guess my next goal is to mod back in (functional) dungeon masters.
Considering I know next to nothing about modding, can anyone explain how to do this?
Removing "_EXOTIC" from the [PET_EXOTIC] tag didn't seem to work.

...please pull lever to clear animal traps of exotic vermin.
Can somebody explain where that lever is? :-\

Considering how nobles are currently in a state of purgatory and I can't get a dungeon master, there's no way for me to clear my animal traps when the trapper decides to get a lizard or toad, and I'm wasting wood making new ones.
An even better solution would be to have the presence of a dungeon master emulated without needing one to immigrate, because I'd also like to train these rhinoceroses I've caught. ;D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Food Barrel Crisis
« on: March 28, 2011, 04:05:44 pm »
Open the "Stock[p]iles" menu and set the "Reserved barrels" number to something greater than zero. Now, the game will always set aside that many barrels for workshop jobs and will never assign them to stockpiles for storage.
This seems like the best solution. Too bad I only noticed it after I'd already separated stockpiles. >_<
Oh well, thank you anyway. :P

EDIT: Well, that is, until I use up all of the reserved barrels.
What happens then?

But stone jugs won't take things like plants or seeds or fish, right?

I'll put this as succinctly as possible:

Booming farming industry.
Desert fort (very few trees).
Overload of plants and seeds, and as such, barrels needed to store them.
No more drinks.
No more empty barrels.

What do I do? What's the most convenient solution?

It beats my metalworker who spends his days making gold statues of himself...
The engravers in Headshoots had engraved images of themselves engraving.

My masons had once mad a statue of Reg Oilgates, who had an issue with bleeding constantly though she was unwounded and disease-free - and for no apparent reason, considering she was in no way a venerable, honorable, or significant dorf.

Also, I had placed an artifact cabinet inside my noble's room. Directly across the room was engraved upon the wall the visage of that exact cabinet.
I can't quite understand how the redundancy there could be pleasing.
