My thought is random generation as default but you can 'nickname' the squads like you can a dwarf

1 - not sure really

2- I've never had problem - they just get forbidden because they were stuck in a enemy and if you unforbid them in time, the soldier does not even drop them.

I would guess a glitch - did you do a lot of other world-gens before you setted on this one?
It appears that this kind of thing is not too uncommon an occurrence under those circumstances.

I think the only way is the water in the caverns. As I recall, only murky pool tiles collect rainwater - channelled holes do not.

Siege engines (as of last time I tested) can fire through any thickness of fortifications - also, the wiki has a suggestion for high-density ballista placement

Also, it could be that your fortress wealth is not high enough, or that you were just unlucky this season - it happens. I've had several seasons when nobody turned up then the next season I got a veritable torrent of migrants.

Am I the only one that now has a mental image of lines of buckets a la the Sorcerer's Apprentice from Fantasia?

Livers, eyeballs, brains, lungs were typical things people did'nt eat, cats, dogs, lampreys and other nasty animals were never eaten.
Nope. Not dwaves, here are dwarves, happily eating lamprey livers and Crundle Brain Stews.

The humans in DF seem to eat even worse stuff. Human traders keep offering me barrels of large roach ichor and groundhog blood. YUMMY!

Actually, I would argue that people eat some very strange things. King Henry I of England is recorded as dying of a 'surfet of lampreys', Haggis comes to mind (sheeps heart, liver and lungs) and blood is used to make black pudding and other forms of blood sausage even today. The exclusive eating of the meat (and not the offal) of animals is a fairly modern thing brought on by factory farming.
In the 800-900s shortly before Yuletide, was the time known as 'Blood Moon' when most people would slaughter the pigs they had been fattening up over the summer and use *everything* that could be used. Headcheese/Brawn, blood sausage, marrow is quite nutritious, the meat would be cured and/or frozen so it would keep over the winter etc.

I think that the different values for various parts of a carcass would be a good idea - and would it be possible to mod in some sort of blood pudding?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarf Therapist for Linux-Help
« on: May 31, 2011, 05:08:45 pm »
Did you install it through your distro's package manager? If so, try opening a terminal and typing 'dwarftherapist' into it. This will also spit out any errors if it is failing to run for whatever reason. Alternatively, run
Code: [Select]
locate dwarftherapist in terminal then type
Code: [Select]
./path/to/dwarf/therapist/binary As above, this will allow you to see debugging information in the terminal.

Hope this helps

You can use OpenGL with DF 2010 - just change PRINT_MODE in /data/init/init.txt from 2D to STANDARD or one of the other OpenGL modes.
IIRC DF2010 was designed with OpenGL from the outset though the default is to use the old 2D mode.
