I like soapmakers! What else am I supposed to do with 200 units of forgotten beast tallow!? Eat it?

Yeah I get fond of my dwarves too. Particularly in this fort which is now 23 years old (oldest I have ever gone) and there are some interesting characters starting to emerge.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What does your fortress look like?

Here's some industrial stuff. It's an aboveground fort built entirely out of glass or copper (goblinite) so it is REALLY important for me to have a super efficient glassworking and metal industry or I just spend forever waiting for materials.

Re cold, I'm on a tundra, and after 23 years my civilian population is mostly naked. No frostbite here yet! I think it's okay unless you get the "COLD" flag on outside meeting areas.

I'm slowly putting my dwarves into civilian uniforms a squad at a time, and I'm using leather armor/cloak/helm/gauntlets/boots mainly because they don't claim that stuff so it's safe to have around. Claimed clothes are the BANE OF MY EXISTENCE, they claim them right off the backs of the dead goblins, apparently even when they're forbidden/marked for dumping. I haven't been sure about arming them though, mainly because of the tantrum issue. Crossbows do sound hilariously awesome.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Building into a river
« on: May 13, 2011, 02:03:59 am »
Hang on. You're trying to build stairs down to the ground, in an area where you have ice walls but a non-ice floor? This sounds an awful lot like something I've noticed on my many glacier embarks: I can dig stairs down through ice just fine, but when I get to the LAST layer of ice before hitting rock (i.e. I have a rock floor and ice walls), the dwarves just leave a hole instead of digging stairs and all subsequent attempts to build stairs in that area, no matter what material I select and where it is, give me "cancels blah blah; cannot find path". I've always had to use ramps to get down through ice because of this. Once you are down there though it's no problem. Try digging a second access down using ramps, dig into your stairwell, build the stairs, then wall it up again. Did that make any sense?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to attract migrants?
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:29:27 am »
OK, the dwarven caravan is what seems to report popcap info to the mountainhome, so you need to get a caravan into your fort and have them leave again safely. The mountainhome probably still thinks you're above popcap if they haven't received reports of your recent events. At any rate I guess you need to deal with your ambusher problem and then just wait for a while.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problem with Stairs from the Bottom Up
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:26:30 am »
Have you taken the floor covering your original staircase off yet? If not, just remove it and that should solve the problem. The command to remove a construction is d-n (d to open designations menu, n to select remove, and then put the cursor over the floor and hit enter).

I'm not sure why your other staircases didn't work, unless you were trying to dig up under a built floor without removing the floor first.

Make more wealth and don't let anyone else die. As long as you haven't set your popcap to something low you should get them eventually. Has the dwarven caravan been yet?

To all dwarves of Bellrings:

CLAIMING OF GOBLIN JUNK IS NOT PERMITTED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. NO. STOP CLAIMING IT. Especially you Atis Kengcatten, Weaponsmith, I have finally located the xxalpaca wool cloakxx you're spamming "cancels store owned item; item inaccessible" about, and it's on fire. You don't want it. No, seriously. Trust me. You don't want it.

Those of you complaining about nakedness, which is most of you, will be allocated uniforms AS AND WHEN WE GET ROUND TO IT. And I don't want to hear ANY more complaints about leather armor and chafing. You're dwarves. Get used to it.

Wood burning skill, under farming - not furnace operating :)

I've heard that it's handless arms and footless legs that rot to bone, everything else just stays "so-and-so's left arm" or "so-and-so's partial skeleton". I think mutilated corpses that have had everything chopped off them also rot to stacks of usable bones. Use well trained axedwarves as your military if you want sentient bones, they seem to sever more bits than other soldiers. Dropping prisoners should also work if the drop is high enough as it will have the same effect of exploding the corpse to get the isolated limb parts. I accidentally dropped two dwarves fifteen storeys (don't ask) and I have stacks of dwarf bone [3] and dwarf bone [5] now located in their coffins... wonder if I could make use of those if I deconstruct the coffins...

You could just type one out :)

Sweet pic btw!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Captian of the guard
« on: May 08, 2011, 07:38:02 am »
Adamantine warhammers are absolutely not harmless, at least in .23, I gave one to my captain of the guard and the two beatings he meted out were both fatal, one of them instantly (took the guy's head off!) and the other one after a few minutes due to suffocation from a broken neck. I don't know why the beatings even occurred since I did have a perfectly good jail with more than enough cells.

Either meet the mandates every time/kill nobles who make impossible mandates, or don't appoint a captain of the guard. I'm not even convinced about having one unarmed, since my dwarves are capable of killing things with punches to the brain quite often.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your best artifact ever
« on: May 08, 2011, 05:35:15 am »
"This is a saguaro rib harp. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of saguaro rib wood. This object menaces with spikes of saguaro rib wood." Yeah yeah I know but it was the first artifact in this fort. It's called "The Celebrated Scale", which I think is awesome, especially since the guy who made it was a founder and already had a musical-themed name as a friend's request. I've had awful luck with artifacts otherwise, I've had two adamantine warhammer possessions (neither of them even liked hammers!) and a reindeer bone battleaxe.

I did get a nice adamantine mail shirt though. Weakencleaned. "Encircled with bands of towercap, sheep leather and pigtail fiber, adorned with hanging rings of goliath tarantula silk (mod) and menaces with spikes of alpaca wool. On the item is an image of mountains in adamantine, dwarves traveling in bismuthininte and a cloud in rose quartz." So it's kind of a little sunset scene with blue mountains, pink clouds and dwarves traveling underneath. :)
