DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Goblin parachuters

yeah if a creature lands on another creature, neither take damage. People have tried to weaponize this before to deploy military by dropping their soldiers onto a carpet of kittens.

Turns out while throwing invader blizzardmen in the magma moat is admittedly funny, said blizzardmen don't actually die from being on fire, nor do they path out of the moat via the ramps. Oh man the smoke...

Bellrings (tundra fort) has just brought up magma 45 z-levels to fill a moat. 90 pumps double stacked, all components made of iron including the blocks. I thought I had over-engineered my pump stack, I needed 7 standard water reactors to get it going but I was glad of it in the end. Filled a 4-wide moat around the outer perimeter of a 4x4 embark in less than a season, with the ability to pull up more whenever I want it. Also oddly I really didn't suffer noticeable lag while doing it, despite the multiple reactors and massive amount of liquid moved. Maybe because it was a double stack with 2 draw tiles per level?

Now to tap into the supply and get me some above-ground magma forges/glass furnaces... :)

No, definitely use silver for warhammers since you've got it. Silver makes about the best warhammers available without moods.

I'd just build a bridge off something really tall, draft him, make him go stand on it then retract the bridge. That's quick and efficient.

DF Gameplay Questions / Are the humans going to siege me?
« on: May 03, 2011, 02:37:56 am »
16yo fort, about to hit its 17th year. So last summer I got these two messages consecutively

A human diplomat from blahblah has arrived.
A vile force of darkness has arrived!

The diplomat spawned six tiles away from a hammer squad on the edge of the map, there was no way anyone was going to get to him in time and he was dead within ten turns. I've had good relationships with the humans up until now, how likely is it that I will get sieged by them? I want to know whether I should drop all my building projects and concentrate on fortifying my wall :|

Does he want "raw... green..." or "rough... color"? If it's the latter he won't take raw green glass, he MUST have an actual rough gem. You would need to find and dig one out.

I like sewing images on goblin clothes , one "sew cloth image" job can turn a sock worth 30dwarfbucks into one worth 300dwarfbucks and the raw ingredients were all free unless you count growing the pigtail and dimple cup. but I have to stop doing that when the fort gets to a certain age because the dwarves all start claiming all the clothes :( I do the large serrated disk thing now. I only make mine out of copper because that's what the local goblinite yields when smelted, but I get legendary weaponsmiths out of it and I can buy out the caravans with byproducts if I want to.

I've got a siege-breaker superweapon (dodge trap catwalk) that has so far killed two goblins and three dwarves, that's fairly dwarfy I think? I suspect it needs re-engineering... or basic safety procedures, or something.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Lavish Catacombs and Nobles
« on: May 02, 2011, 06:25:11 am »
I've got a couple of (living) militia captains with adamantine sarcophagi in their 3x3 tombs, that's $15,000 for just the coffin, not counting the engravings. The baron doesn't care because he got the artifact adamantine sarcophagus. Basically as long as the king has a (royal) tomb at least 1 dwarfbuck more expensive than the baron, and the baron has a tomb at least 1 dwarfbuck more expensive than the next guy in line, they seem totally cool with it. I did accidentally unassign the baron's tomb when I replaced the sarcophagus, and then he started getting annoyed, but only because he didn't have a tomb at all.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Clothes
« on: May 01, 2011, 09:27:05 am »
I've been experimenting with civilian uniforms to make them wear clothes, idea being that if they already have a good quality unworn set of clothes on they won't claim new ones.

Also My fort is now 14 years old and I have seen discarded clothes go from xpig tail sockx to XXpig tail sockXX and then disappear, so they do eventually rot away.

Dear Inspector Javert Captain of the Guard,

I can only commend your zeal when it comes to punishing heinous criminals, and admittedly maybe it was my fault for appointing you in the first place, but did you have to break that legendary metalsmith's neck because he couldn't make platinum items on account of not having any platinum? Our poor Chief Medical Dwarf, who had never before lost a patient, now has the "has witnessed death" thought for the first time because the guy suffocated in his hospital minutes later.

Plus, I gave you that adamantine hammer for a reason. Why did you then start by biting the metalsmith in the leg?

Yrs, Zephyr Hound

my fort is twelve years old and I have finally given bedrooms to some of my dwarves. Specifically, the military. So pretty much my entire army except for the squad on gate duty wanders off into the tundra to pick up all the crap they'd claimed before I started d-b-D'ing all non metal goblinite.

The first thing that happens is that a goblin swordsman ambush decloaks next to a solitary dwarf. I check her out and she is a champion (legendary knife/shield/fighter) from my knife squad. *activate* four dead goblins later, she quietly gets her item and goes back inside.

The next thing that happens is another ambush has a go at my Captain of the Guard, who carries an artifact adamantine war hammer, artifact silver buckler, and is followed by 62 war dogs due to being the fort's designated animal trainer. I counted five dogs attached to one goblin at the same time in the combat logs.

And then the third ambush comes up to the gate and decloaks right next to the captain of the on-duty squad, a swordsdwarf entirely equipped in adamantine with an exceptional sword. I didn't even have to tell anyone to do anything that time. There were no survivors.

Moral, if you see a Bellrings soldier out on his own, JUST LET HIM PICK UP HIS SOCK.
