DF Gameplay Questions / Marksdwarf training problem found?

I recently started a new fort and encountered te by now well known problem that my marksdwarfs wouldn't train at the archery range unless inactive and idle, when set to active/training they stand around, usually in their room, with the job 'going to archery practise'

After some time I was moving most of my military into the daylight and made a second target range and now they do shoot there while their orders are active/training. The difference between the two ranges is that with one the targets stand right next to eachother and the other has a free tile between each target:
A A A A A A
AAAAAAAA
They do shoot at the more spateous one, but when I set them to shoot at the targets that stand right next to eachother they stop again.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but maybe someone has this problem and wants to try if it works?

Can we please add a sticky to this forum dealing with frequently asked questions? It's all nice and well redirecting people to the wiki, but answering the same questions time and time again isn't making only me a bit agitated, though I might show it more than others. Putting the answers to some questions that are often asked here will reduce traffic on the wiki, which for me is occasionally hard to load, and stop some recurring questions.

DF Gameplay Questions / breeding jaguars, or not?

I've traded with the elven caravan a pair of jaguars, male and female. They successfully had ofspring, even when war-trained, and I intended to rplace my wardogs with these. They've stopped breeding though, for no reason I can find, they're not making more little jags. Any suggestions what might be wrong?

my total pet population is below 100

edit:
2nd question. If a dwarf had a mood in an old fort and migrates to a new fort, will he/she be available for a new mood?

no, this is not on how to organize your military.

I've noticed that all my military is slowly gaining organizer skill as demonstrations are held. In fact, my demonstrations actually seem to work. Does anyone know the exact effects? Would it be worth it to circulate them through the manager position to increase their skill at organizing?

I made a megaproject fort. Lots of items remain, about 120 dwarfs. Now I want to start a more challenge play, but whenever I try to abandon, I get a crash. Too many items? something else? Bad computer? I'd really hate to lose this world.

I carved a few fortifications in a closeby cavern wall and thought my marksdwarfs could take potshots. Now all the zombies are beelining to the map edge and disappearing. Is that normal? I'd wanted to fight them.

about a previous version I remembered that trained birds would lose their flight ability, making them mostly useless. I think the discussion was about rocs. Is this still the case?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Sudden paralysis

I was trudging through some catacombs with a swordsdwarf companion. We had been figting cave swallow people, lizard people and I think cave fish people (there were more animal people below the town than regular inhabitants above). Suddenly my companion stops in his tracks, paralyzed. I checked, no traps since I had already walked past there. The room was empty, no enemies anywhere near... Are those blowdarts poisoned? something else? Mystery murder done!

DF Gameplay Questions / Weird immigrant.

In the first immigration wave there is a highly skilled leatherworker. However, he's just standing there, at the edge of the map. He doesn't have the face like my fort dwarves but looks instead like the caravan guards (no tileset). In the units menu he lists as "other" but friendly. In therapist he is listed as a migrant and there are three more names on the list that are probably waiting for him to move.

What is this? can it be fixed?

I'd like to see if there is a vampire or werebeast near my location to see if I can become one, since I never tried before. What is the easiest way to find one in the legends? there are 600.000 historical figures, so just scrolling down that list is not going to work.

Not from nightmares or anything, but:

any time I try to fasttravel, sleep or rest, the game goes back to where I was. sometimes moving me slightly in a random distance.

Any idea what is happening here?

So I read somewhere that if a unit falls, however far, and lands on another unit, it will be unharmed. Is this true? and how does that work with mounts and riders? they fall together, one lands top of the other, possibly? or they both splatter?

My grandmaster chef cook keeps getting unhappy thoughts if someone eats the last of a stack of masterwork roasts (a masterwork item of ... is lost). I've been trading away a lot of the smaller stacks to prevent this, but the caravans are just not bringing enough things of value.

Since he has so many masterwork products, the net effect is very small, but it's worrying that he gets angry from people eating his meals

i finally went to df hack as a last resort:
i cant get the idiots to let go of totally worn down items and equip new ones.... I made spider silk pants, noone would even look at them, BUT, when a siege happened they would haphazardly claim some items from corpses cluttering the map

now, is there ANY chance my dwarfs will actually use any silk pants, socks or other items now i made them dump all the worn out stuff?

I also decided to recruit -everyone- as inactive militairy, so every civilian would at least wear leather armor.... am i missing anything, any suggestions?
