I didn't say impossible, just not effective. Maybe I should even say 'not effective against a goblin siege'. Not compared to easier or more regular means

attempts at using launching by a bridge for defence have been fairly ineffective. Objects are scattered extremely randomly, so it's not great as projectile weapon, and launching war animals or dwarfs as a sort of paratrooper suffered from the same problem.

I don't know the mechanics of clothing, but with other stuff they tend to grab the most expensive. Maybe the worn clothing is still more expensive than other clothing available, due to dye or decoration?

switch it around so the ones you don't want butchered are in the cages and the doomed ones in the pastures and use (v)iew, when over the creature press (p)references, (s)laughter

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: BUILDING_DESTROYERS destroying from below

in that case you must not have read the wiki

I realize this sounds a bit unfriendly:
The wiki states that hatches etc are -usually- indestructible from below with a few exceptions, most importantly is that if there is an alternative route to it from where the monster can destroy it, it can destroy it from below in some cases.

no, no way to force a stockpile to use copper bins over wooden ones, except for destroying the wooden ones and replacing everything with metal

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Problem with traders!

if they didn't declare war now, just trade as normal, no need to go overboard in an attempt to make up. Unless this behavior is different in Masterwork  :P

the 'cotton' is most likely a MW thing. Ask questions at the masterwork specific part of the modding forum, I don't play the mod.

are you using a mod? the maker of the mod may have changed all plant based fibers to be 'cotton' to cut down on all the diferent descriptions, possibly similar to 'leather' instead of 'dog leather' or 'turkey leather'

Did you activate it through the military menu?

I have to admit I think it's most likely something you did.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to defend against sieges?
« on: February 20, 2014, 05:12:06 pm »
fields of upright spike traps linked to a lever can be great. It's so over powered I stopped using them. It can destroy entire sieges, doesn't jam, hits and kills trapavoid, water breathing, magma, stun and pain immune creatures, unless they're made of metal or stone, but still cripples those. If the entrance is a tunnel it wil also deal with flying creatures.

Your military can be a great asset too, when properly used. Use your eyes. If you see an elite archer or crossbow goblin, don't fire from behind fortifications. If there are normal ones, fire from behind fortifications but don't charge (if your marksdwarfs have a clear path to actually engage the goblins in hand to hand you're doing something wrong), and once they have no ranged support, either continue to harass them with your marksdwarfs or sent in the dwarf lords. I had a mix of spearlords, swordlords, axelords and some wrestlers (actually, miners with steel picks and legendary 5+++ in mining) and those 8 defeated a 40 goblin, 10 trolls and 10 rutherers large siege. It was a carnage. One of the weapon lords suffered a scratch on his hand.

when taming them you don't have to release them from a cage
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Animal_trainer

when their slightly tamed they will then be taken from their cage as a (tame) animal would be

you also don't have to build their specific cage. Any built cage is useful though, and with (q) and (a) you can assign animals to it. No limit to how many or where they come from. When you want them out, use the same way to unassing them, or set up a pasture and assign them to it.

If you have no clue how to do things, I really advice you to keep the wiki close at hand, it's a great store of information. The first few months I played I had it constantly in the background.
