in fact, sieges in 34.xx didnt show up that fast, neither did ambushes. The first ambush never showed up before the 2nd winter, in fact, the first snatcher won't show up before that and won't more likely before the third, possibly the 4th or even the 5th year. One extreme case didnt have anything untill the 6th year when a siege suddenly showed up. Very simply put, you are just way too impatient.
Really? My fort's been going for two years now with no ambushes whereas before in 34.xx, the first ambush came right after the first year.

in the second winter - earliest - zombies not counted. It was pretty much hard coded. But even then, sometimes they just didn't come untill suddenly they show up with a siege

it is partly luck. If your civ hasnt spread into many different biomes, they'll have little variation, especially in trees. So even though they might have spread out quite a bit, they might only touch 2 or 3 biomes

and yes, DF does keep track of what materials and stuff is actually available for each region and if a civilization has discovered it. Elves will always only bring animals they captured in their region, so a tropical tribe won't ever bring you a polar bear etc

I don't think I was impatient, I went 4 years without even a thief. Though I did get two werebeasts who slaughtered a few fisherdwarves, but those are fairly easy to kill with a 20 dwarf army.

if you went 4 years without a thief, he is AT MOST 1 YEAR late. He may possibly show up at the 2nd winter, but it's not that likely and depends a lot on fortress wealth and how close they are. It is the earliest any goblin or kobold is possible to show up at all. He's likely to show up the third winter, but no guarantee, same for the 4th. By the 5th it's starting to get late, 6th is strange but not unheard of. If you checked your neighbours before embark and it showed goblins, they'll get to you at some point. Make a lot of stuff, give traders outrageous profits and in general just let the world know how rich you are, it may help.

That the world is now alive may also contribute to goblin lateness, I don't know, but if they have a big army in the field, they may not have anyone to spare to bother you

You may or may not be getting error messages because Planters tend to carry bags of seeds instead of just one, and so the rest of the seeds inside the bag are unavailable to other dorfs.

The planters still carry one seed. It's when someone else goes to collect seeds from a still or dining hall when they pick up the bag

long answer - the water is still flowing under the 'floor' tiles on the surface, just like a stream which doesnt have that floor above the water. Building a wall above the level where the water is actually flowing isn't going to change anything

second the last 2. With the 'new' hauling, dwarfs would get the barrel or bag to pick up items instead of gathering it one by one. A huge boon when cleaning up after sieges, but a pain in this case. Someone wants to go plant a seed, but the barrel or bag gets nabbed before he gets there

plot size above ground tends to look weird - not every spot is suitablke for farming. Other shrubs may be growing there, rocks may be in the way or the ground is just wrong

it's mostly the comparison of mace vs hammer where the mace loses out, the material is ok. So by all means, if you have someone already skilled at using a mace, go ahead, retraining may take longer than you want to spend on it
