[As much as I hate to leave a plot thread hanging like this, I have to get some sleep tonight.  This sub-plot won't be vital for a while in-story, so it's not going to cause any major hang-ups unless things start moving really fast.]

362
[I'd really rather not reveal the mysterious stranger's identity until later.  Don't worry, it won't kill everyone.  I'm planning to keep the body-count low.  Also, not necessarily evil.  Just dark.]

363
[Well yeah, but you'd still be able to see it over the walls, I assume.

Man, I picked the perfect time to unleash this.  X and wierd are both out for the time being.  Gizogin and the G-Bodies are busy treating those guys from the crash.  The dwarves are disoriented and nauseous.  Basically, defenses are as low as they can be.]

364
[Alright, time to see if I can pull this off...]

The two figures crested the hill.  In the distance was a walled-off area, with a few small buildings and a tower.

"There," said the shorter of the two, a dwarf in heavy armor.  "I told you I'd find it.  Now unhand me!"  He struggled against the other's grip on his arm, but it was like fighting a vise; he couldn't break free.

"Patience, my friend," said the taller, a cloaked figure with a hidden face.  "Until I am sure, you will stay with me."  He started to walk towards the fortress, dragging the dwarf behind him.

Suddenly, a large vessel scythed through the dark clouds, landing badly within the walls ahead.  A huge flash blossomed, before rapidly shrinking to nothing.  "Ahh," sighed the voice behind the cloak.  "This is the place."

"I told you so!" the dwarf said, insistent.

"Yes, you did.  And now, as promised, I will release you."  The cloaked figure reached out its other hand, placing it on the dwarf's forehead.  A black aura gathered around it fingers, before spreading out over the dwarf.  Within seconds, nothing could be seen of him but a writhing mass of shadows.  The gloved hand withdrew, taking the shadows with it.  Where the dwarf had been standing was now only a pile of clothing and armor.

"You served me well, Wrathhammer.  Rest in peace."

[Seems about right to me.  Well, except for OREOSOME's characters; I don't know what the official stance on that is.]

Gizogin directed the G-bodies to check over the unconscious people.  Wierd had apparently treated the worst of their radiation poisoning, but they still had other injuries to be dealt with.  They were all severely bruised and battered, and the dwarf had a few cracked ribs.  Silently, he got right to work.

[Well, Gizogin's actions are pretty straightforward from here, and X is out of the picture.  I really need to stop writing myself into situations like this.  I have an idea for a fairly complicated sub-plot, but right now I'm trying to find a way to pull it off that isn't too cliched.  That, and it involves throwing around quite a bit more power (in-story and in terms of plot) than I'm used to.

I was ruminating on the apparent lack of scheming in this fortress.  I know political maneuvering isn't a big point in DF, but it stands to reason there'd be at least some power-play going on, what with all the ambitious forumites and whatnot.  Gizogin would, I imagine, stay out of the politics.  He's a doctor because he genuinely wants to help people (I will, at some point, go into his reasons for that; they're fairly deep), not because it puts him in a position of considerable power.  X may be a different story, but his motives for doing anything are known only to him and Gizogin.  If he decides to get political, it will be because he sees it as the most advantageous course of action he can take.]

We don't shoot ourselves in the foot!  That implies that we have the presence of mind to carry a loaded weapon, which clearly isn't the case.  The Battlefailed saga is so dangerous that a weapon would make logical sense, so we obviously must not have one.

No, what we do is much more akin to dipping our collective foot into magma, realizing that it burns horribly, then sticking it back in repeatedly out of spite.

368
[X is completely out of it for ten hours.  Gizogin is an emotional wreck at the moment, though I suppose an emergency might snap him out of it for a while.]

369
[Well yes, but you still need quite a bit of lead.  That's assuming anyone even thinks to check for a radiation leak in the first place.  Even then, it'd be quite a while before the shielding was up, long enough for the radiation to do serious damage.  I'd stick with beta emissions.]

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dragon Breeding Pair - Now What?
« on: July 08, 2012, 09:44:30 pm »
Why wouldn't dragon eggs hatch?  If you have a breeding pair, there shouldn't be any difference between dragon eggs and, say, chicken eggs.  I don't know if the hatching time is the same, though.

Definitely breed them.  I haven't done much with the new training system, but I believe that all animals born in your fortress to semi-tame animals can be completely tamed.

Gizogin awoke slowly.  He was in unfamiliar surroundings, but he was too dazed to be panicked.  Looking up, he recognized the inside of the cargo bay.  The tank, then.  How did he get there?  Last he remembered, he'd been...

Oh.  Memories flooded back.  The dwarves, with those terrible black veins and red eyes.  There had been fire.  A burning dwarf.  Gizo X yelling at him, telling him to move.  He'd driven the tank, trying to escape those terrible eyes.  He remembered wierd, floating in the air, singing a song with no sound.

Gizogin stayed like that for a time, just lying there in the back of the tank, trying to come to terms with what he'd seen.  Finally, he sat up.  Wierd was standing there, looking at something in the distance, his back to Gizogin.  At least, he thought it was wierd.  His hair looked... shinier than he remembered.  Maybe it was the lighting.  He looked around, getting a feel for his surroundings, still dazed.  Gizo X was slumped in the corner, completely dead to the world.
He must be charging, thought Gizogin.

Slowly, Gizogin crawled to the cargo bay door.  His head was pounding.  Maybe he'd hit it.  He'd have to get it checked.  The thought made him giggle, and that opened the floodgates.  He broke down into great, heaving sobs that wracked his whole body.  Tears flowed freely from his eyes, and he curled into a ball, rocking back and forth slowly.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What is going on?
« on: July 08, 2012, 09:04:58 pm »
It's likely a smear of FB blood or extract.  If it's sitting on the ground somewhere and your animals are walking over it, then that would expose them to it.  Look around the area where you fought the FB.

[@Zanz: No, that was intentional.  X doesn't know whether or not they're still infected, but referring to them as such clears up confusion.  I suppose I could have said "previously-infected," but it's a bit nit-picky.]

374
Um, gizogin, the inflicted would no longer have the phyrexis corrupting them.  They would look exactly like they did before it happened.  See: second section of the ending.

[Ah.  Missed that bit.  Thanks, I will make an edit to fix it.]
