Get a danger room. It helps. Small chamber, lever, crappy spikes, good mechanism, well-equipped recruits.

Yeah, valuable things attract ambushes and sieges. The more dorfbucks your stuff is worth, the more of then they show up. So create weaponry before trinkets, or at least trade them away fast.

Okay. Do whatever you can to fuck up everything and make the dwarfs suffer. Then try again. Embark somewhere else. Watch the videos. Keep the wiki open at all times. Try not to die.

Ah. What was his mood when he died/his personality when he was alive? You might have a party-thrower or a berserker on your hands. And with your fortress in the state it's in, I doubt you can afford to take the risk. I'd recommend burying him/slab/memorial/whatever.
