DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread

Will collapsing a constructed wall onto a ramp (from 1 z-level up):

a) Place the constructed wall where the ramp was,
b) Destroy both the wall and the ramp,
or c) Destroy only the wall, but not the ramp?

I'm making a dam in a brook so that the cistern connected to the brook will fill up faster (it's turgidly slow right now...), at least I think it will do that. It's connected to the brook with a (loooooong) one-tile wide tunnel, and it's about halfway along the brook (it's really just kind of a small bend near one of the map's corners, kind of a shitty brook, but hey, water is water), so I think most of the water is not flowing into the tunnel but rather downstream. To prevent this, I'm...hold on, let me draw you a rough diagram:

X = brook
O = where the wall will be
T = tunnel (part)

xxxx
xxxxtttttttttt
oooo

It's not exactly accurate, but it gets the point across.

Anyway, if somebody has an answer, I'd love to hear it. If the answer is either B or C, I'll have to abandon this project. Or just change a few steps, I don't quite know yet.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Strike the Earth message

I got the message about wolves, or maybe it was leopards... but I haven't seen either of those (Savage desert).

On the other hand I have encountered a trio of giant desert scorpions. No danger of them getting hungry, they receive a nice diet of dwarf...

Capture them. BREED them. Then, when you have enough children of both genders, butcher the parents so they cannot act as sleeper agents for sting operation on your fortress.

Hehe. Sting.

One thing I did was give all spiders the [HUNTS_VERMIN] tag.  Wish there was a [HUNTS_INSECTS] tag but that does.  And when I say all spiders, I mean any that weren't small enough to be vermin themselves, or that have decent webs.

That's right, GCS hunting vermin.  Weasels and Ferrets and quite a few lizards are doing some vermin hunting, too.  The end result is that my world doesn't have a whole lot of vermin, and cats aren't quite as necessary.

I think flies can get webbed too... once I open up the caves and the little spiders find their way in, I never seem to have flies anymore.

I didn't know weasels and ferrets were in the game.

Also, just in case people don't know, the vermin hunter tag is also responsible for animals "adopting" dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Are my badgers rotting from inside out?
« on: April 12, 2011, 09:42:42 am »
I had a very similar thing happen once (I think a quote from my thread about it is still in somebody's signature...).

Rotting animals/peoples will cause miasma. Prepare for this. Butcher the infected animals, I don't know if they'll yield viable meat, but if not, that's what the refuse stockpile is for.

Now, the hospital IS equipped to deal with necrotized tissue, I'm fairly sure. When it's on the outer limbs, your doctors will excise it (surgery required). I'm not sure about internal organs, they may do surgery on that, but I can't say for sure. Prepare for a shit-tonne of miasma in your hospital. When this happened in my fort, I couldn't even see the doctors and patients because of the massive clouds of purple smoke. The impromptu miasma vents I dug did not help a lot, so don't bother.

Now, if only the feet are rotting, your dwarves stand a good chance of survival. They may become walking-impaired, but crutches work now, so hurray. If a lot of other stuff is rotting too, chances of survival get slimmer. I had one child in the last incident whose...well, everything that I could see was rotten. He died (ironically, he was the son of the chief medical dwarf...I felt very sad after that).

Hope you've got a fucktonne of suturing thread, doctors, cloth for wrapping the wounds, and nice things around the fortress to inspire happy thoughts, mate!

Might just be a coincidence, then.

I think Toady once said that there's a script that picks out a random dwarf from the list of dorfs that haven't made an artifact, and that that one will then go and make something snazzy. Only millitary being selected may be some kind of bug, though.

If you have prepared meals or store your food in barrels, there'll be no real problem. It won't rot that fast.

You can't get rid of flies.

darn. okay. :) i will get my cooks to work. thanks.

You figured out the hint! Have a !!cookie!!.

I had a stairway dug out of a soil layer. The area it was in flooded slightly after a mishap with my well. The stairway disappeared.

It's a nice touch.

I thought that was a bug that got fixed, what version are you using?

Oh, I'm not on .25 yet. I think it's .23.

I thought it was a feature...it made sense, too! I mean, water could concievably destroy a clay/sand staircase...I guess I forgot that everything dwarves build is for the ages.

This has given me a great idea...

Make a square of clear glass windows in a meeting area, like so:

XXX
XOX
XXX

Channel out the square over the O from above, remove the ramp (you may need to wait with putting up one of the windows).

Pit in two rooster/animals/badgers/whatever from above.

Pretend that your dwarves are betting. Seeing as nobody makes coins anymore, you can pretend they're using rocks, or something.

Cockfight in the meeting hall!

(Note: Cockfighting is a very terrible thing that shouldn't be done, except in Dwarf Fortress. Do not facilitate cockfights by betting on them. Cocks need lots of cuddling and stroking.)

Nothing is working.

They have since starved to death.

A tantrum spiral has begun.

There's three goblin ambushes approaching from the outside.

I think I'll sound the alarm just so most of them can die inside.

Byebye, Bastionrope!

Obviously not.

Your countess is a necrophiliac.

Throw her into the magma pit.
I knew it.
If she doesnt bread, let her cake.
Sorry my English is not fantastic. How can she "breed" then?  :P

No, see, there's a joke here. There's a quote attributed to some French queen (Mary Antoinette?), who responded to complaints that the peasantry had no bread that they should eat cake instead. ("Well, then, let them eat cake.")

The quote is probably just propaganda, but a lot of people know it.
