DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread
« on: February 19, 2011, 09:08:42 am »
How do I stop the official DF music from playing during the game? It's a nice tune, but I prefer listening to Tom Waits while I get my dorf on.

Also, you can download DF without the music pack. It's the small version.

I like to play DF in absolute silence.

Don't we all (well, no, not all of us, obviously).

Another question. How the eff do you make a pasture? I can't find it, and I'm worried my animals will starve - or will they eat the randomly scattered baby toes and needle grass for now?

Turn sound off in the init file.

I thought it was that, but I wasn't sure. Thanks.

Bumblebees are better, anyway. Seriously, they're like tiny fuzzy flying bundles of joy. Did you know you can pet bumblebees? They won't even care, as long as you don't squish them, which is when they sting.

Bumblebees...the fluffy wamblers of the insect kingdom.

Huh. Is it? Fairly sure it said WinRAR.

Oh well. Thanks!

I just tried downloading the pre-installed pack, but when I try to extract the WinRAR file, it says the file has an unknown filetype or is damaged. This while it says it's a WinRAR file...so I guess it must be damaged?

When I hear the world 'Backward Freak' I imagine a pale, emaciated type creature who crawls along the ground upside-down on all fours, like a spider.

Four legged spiders huh?...  :P

Probably more like a human.

Sounds like something Silent Hill to me.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bookkeeper bookkeeping too much
« on: February 18, 2011, 10:25:27 am »
Once my bookkeeper reaches maximum precision, I just turn the required precision down a couple notches. It doesn't degrade from 'maximum precision', but he'll go back to doing his other jobs.

Seriously? The counts always stay completely accurate?

Not that it really matters. My bookkeeper is also my manager and has no other labours turned on, so he spends most of his time in his office anyway...when he's not drowning his crippling depression over his lack of friends and social contact in barrels of gutter cruor.

Poor li'l guy.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: "You have discovered a downward passage."

Better Idea: block off all passageways between caverns to limit FB wandering.

The last thing you want is for a FB to disappear for a year, only to enter your fortress through your garbage chute.

Urist McUselesspeasant cancels Dump Item: Interrupted by forgotten beast.
Urist McUselesspeasant got torn into teeny tiny little chunks.

And nothing of value was lost.

The Clerk should show up pretty soon - or at least a migrant with points in the relevant skill. If he's not otherwise useful, stick him in the position of Bookkeeper.

Don't let him off the hook just yet. There's a cavern to be explored, bucko! Go make friends with Mister Spider, Mister Cave Crocodile and Miss Elk Bird!

Those damn whips... THAT damn silver whip... And that damn goblin lasher... *weeps gently*

There there, mate. Melt it down and make a nice memorial to all the dwarves he killed out of it.

The whip I was referring to has little to do with dwarves getting killed by it. I was actually thinking of that Cave Swallowman it killed.

So make a memorial to that heroic, selfless Cave Swallowman that gave its life to defend your fortress.

On a semi-related note, I once saw a goblin lasher leader of a siege squad take off a dog's leg with a silver lash. I was like "Armok's hairy nipples, man! What have you got tied to the end of that thing?! A chainsaw?!"

Poor doggie.

Had an elven or human caravan recently with studded gem for thade. Does that mean I can chain decorations by, say, studdyng gem, then encrusting some bone item with it, then decorating anything else with resulting bone ets.
Also I wonder if there's a way to build down. If i breach the cavern from above and start building downwards ramps or ladders to finally get down to it's floor shall I succeed?

I'm fairly sure you can only encrust finished goods with gems, bone, and other such things. You can't encrust just a stack of bones, it'd have to be a bone helm or something first. Similarly, I don't think you can decorate "cut gems" with anything, as they're only used in encrusting (or just trading away).

If you make a stockpile that only accepts large gems, leather, small cut gems and bone/ivory/horn/tooth far enough away from the other stockpiles,  though, the craftsdwarf/jewelers who go to work at those workshops will encrust and decorate the large gems with aforementioned materials. It may be a smart idea to make a burrow and assign a couple of craftsdwarf to it, make a small food stockpile and a dining room next to it, because if your main dining room and your other stockpiles are (food and finished goods) are on the same level, sometimes they'll go have dinner and then grab, say, a rock mug from a stockpile in that level and run down/over to the workshop they're assigned to.

For extra value, only let craftsdwarves/jewelers of above a certain skill level work at these workshops.

Or you could make a lot of rock mugs. Whatever.
