Other Games / Re: Gaming Pet Peeves

Couple more :

- Absolute lack of any sexual content/life ( aka American rightwinger hypocrisy ) - your heroes kill hundreds of people, maim, wound and ruin countless sentient creatures but god forbids if someone fucks anyone, there is absolutely no nudity or any kind of sexual life even in RPG's. Also conservatards going complete apeshit over naked tits in game ( GTA SA Hot Coffee comes to mind or Original textures to Oblivion scandal )/ any kind of "hard" content like sexual slavery, drugs, child killing, rape etc and no one cares about those many murders you commit in often various horrible ways.

Dud(ette), take a chill pill and stop being so insulting.  Someone believing differently from you doesn't make them a retard. Also - do you realize that using a learning disability / mental condition as an insult is incredibly insensitive?  You're just as blinkered as the people you're complaining about.   And how on earth have you missed the people who complain about violent games? I mean, we've only had people claiming that violence in games is going to cause problems for years.

If you mean, 'I want games to address complex issues in a mature and reasonable manner', then I agree with you. If you mean 'more collectible boob cards and inescapable sex scenes a la Witcher!'...I think we're going to have to agree to disagree.  I'd rather have a realistic relationship presented at Teen/PG-13 levels.

I think we agree that modern games are often too violent (although I do think that violence and sex are very distinct from each other - both can be problematic, but in different ways and for different reasons, so they're not really equivalents like you seem to think).  I'd prefer games to get less violent, instead of filling them with both violence and sex, but I'm going to guess that that isn't your preferred solution.

Pet Peeve: The tendency towards Lawful Stupid / Chaotic Dumb is irritating.  So are the fake-choice dialogs.  Games with complex stories or interesting ideas, or at least modding capability so players can make that, don't seem popular with publishers.

Hm.  Having played Guild Wars 2 for a few years, I think it meets your criteria. But I'm not sure I recommend it.  Nothing in the shop is essential or even super important for gameplay, and in-game currency can purchase the shop curency.  Nothing is locked behind a cash-only paywall.

That said, a major part of the game is locked behind an in-game paywall.  In the April update this year, the cost of a major part of character build - traits - was increased about 1,000% (or more - I didn't value skill points at the typical market rate because most players don't bother turning skill points into gold), or players were given the option of doing a crapton of random stuff to 'earn' what had previously been a natural part of leveling.  All previous characters had their traits unlocked, while new players have to suffer through this BS.

So while I think GW2 has been good about keeping it's cash shop from messing up the game, I can't recommend the game to new players.  It's great if you were playing before the April update.  It's terrible to start now.

Animal keeping is now infinitely more tedious

How so?

Much more micromanagement needed. Instead of adjacent pastures, now either I have to do 1 big pasture per species (harder to secure, can't control where the animals go so overcrowding on single spots is harder to manage) or swap animals around frequently (much more player attention needed).

hauling still isn't fixed

Presumably this report?  It's helpful to link the report when requesting a fix.

I didn't link a report because it's not just a single issue. The way hauling is currently structured and handled, using bins results in more inefficiency and lag, not less.  Dorfs with conflicting demands on bins are a part of it, but there's also the 'bring a single item to bins vs bringing bins to a group of items' behavior (frequently seen in plant harvesting) and several other issues.   See http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=141588.msg5530552#msg5530552 and http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=143732.msg5660285#msg5660285 and http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=142374.msg5577059#msg5577059.   It's probably several issues / changes that are needed, and quite possibly a redesign of how items and storage containers intersect with hauling.

Maybe some of those have been fixed, but I haven't seen mentions of anything in the release lists since at least September.

Nooooo the spore breeding is gone.

Same.  Animal keeping is now infinitely more tedious, and hauling still isn't fixed?  Looks like I'm going to delay upgrading again, unfortunately.

Misogynist trolls and neo-Nazis got gaming into the mainstream news, again.  Why, why, do they need to validate their pitiful existence by harassing people? raaaaggggeeeeee

...

Sad news, everyone. I'm afraid we're going to have to skip my turn, because nothing I do gets the save to load.  For starters, I keep getting warnings about encryption when trying to copy the save file around - do you have a security program running that would do this? Are you using a Mac with disk encryption? Any ideas?  I did eventually got DF 40.14 to recognize the save and thought I'd fixed the problem, but every time DF still crashes. Sometimes I get FATAL WORD ERROR, sometimes it's just an inexplicable crash.

This is why I think holding off on updates is a good idea.  Updates mid-game are always risky and this save seems to be borked. Or at least, this save + my computer is borked, hopefully it'll work for someone else.

Sorry all, life got nutty. I'm in the middle of Murderflood atm, can I get bumped down the list here?

593
Sorry, RL got crazy this past week.  I'll have a post up sometime early next week.

594
No idea why, but DF isn't recognizing the save.  I'm going to try more things tonight, but nothing as worked so far.  Anyone have suggestions?

The save was brought to 0.40.14 for the last part, so you need to get that. No stepladders, but feel free to DFHack them in.

Ah, that would do it.  I didn't see an upgrade notice in the update or the OP so I thought it was still 40.13.  So does this mean none of the tools work with our current save?

There's a lot of other good games from LucasArts also. I grabbed Tales of Monkey Island, it's the kind of game I like.

Save downloading, I'll probably start tomorrow or the day after.

In the unlikely event that my dwarf is still alive by the time my turn rolls around, is everyone ok with a few political assassinations to move my kids up in line for the throne? And by 'a few', I mean 'far more than anyone would ever deem necessary'.

Also, 40.14 is out. I think that it's save compatible aside from mind wiping all our dwarves, but I'm sure they won't lose anything particularly important to their psyche.

.14 is a feature release, not bugfixing. I'm not going to upgrade until a few more bugfixing releases come out.

Need a link to a downloadable save.

Last I remembered we were using standard RAWs, right?  I'm probably going to install a tileset unless there's a good reason not to, because all that red in ASCII makes my eyes bleed.

General Discussion / Re: Christian beliefs and discussion

Yeah.  It's all over the scriptures that in the last days Israel will be gathered in again and queens will be their nursing mothers (i.e. rulers will support them) etc.  Check Isaiah.

Divine intervention doesn't have to be flashy. It can be as simple as guiding the right people to be in the right place at the right time.  That actually seems to be how God works, mostly. Prophets can do crazy things, but mostly what they do is teach and ask people to be better in their everyday lives. Jesus spent 30ish years on earth, and a lot of that was talking to people and asking them to be better.

Any chance of an update, or is raising another team too much of a slog?

Totally understandable if it is.
