DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Pain tolerance; Males vs females

I've had Dorf's wh ohave pulled a Monty Python's Black Knight. They've had limbs chopped off and just keep coming. Although most of those are my patented "Spartan Dwarfs."
except in DF, the "I'll bit your legs off" threat is serious.

Actually the higher pain tolerance of women is a debunked myth. As studies such as this one http://www.jpain.org/article/S1526-5900(03)00559-5/abstract indicate, there is either no discernable difference or a higher pain tolerance among men when cultural expectations are controlled for. This brief article (http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2003-04/cfta-hpt040903.php) directly refers to numerous studies citing that men have higher pain tolerances than women.
ok, i went and read that second article and OH MY GOD! i dont dispute the findings, but SHIT it seems like they were kinda irresponsible with their test subjects. "Subjects were given a monetary incentive to leave their hand in a bowl of freezing cold water" How many greedy test subjects with rent comin up fast left their hand in long enough to cause nerve damage?

im not drawing a connection.
I'm theorizing one.

this ENRAGES me. ill look around the battlefield at the wounded bleeding dwarves who are not being carried to the hospital because all 12 beds are filled with lazy assholes. If i were TRULY in charge of this fortress, the captain of the guard would have beat ALL these assholes to death.

Erm... Considered just housing these homeless Dorfs? Or injuring them and using them for medical practice? Either works for the best of the fort really.
originally this was a prison fort, but recently the warden and all his men have been killed, so the prisoners have begun turning the place into something they actually like. The individual bedrooms are still being dug out.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: "Cleaning"
« on: January 13, 2012, 05:15:28 pm »
if the dirty tile is indoor and NOT mud, dirt or sand, a dwarf with cleaning enabled will go get a bar of soap and clean it. no soap, no cleaning.
Movie or it didn't happen - dwarves only use soap to clean themselves (or their patients), not the fortress.
the way my fort is set up, you have to go past the well to go pretty much anywhere, so it COULD be that all the dwarves i saw carrying soap were only taking it as far as the well.

How many males/females do you enlist into the military? What are the extent of their injuries? How much training do they get?
every dwarf with a combat skill who shows up gets drafted. I'm not sure what the ratio is, as im not at home now, but ALL four of my legendary fighters are females. They receive year round training although there's rarely more than 3 months or so between actual combat. Injuries run the gamut.

Ooorr...

KICKED IN THE NUTS, FOR ‼SCIENCE‼

[Count Rugen]"So, let's just start with what we have. What did this do to you? Tell me. And remember, this is for posterity so be honest. How do you feel?"[/Count Rugen]

Back on topic, I've watched a number of dwarfs walk, or crawl away from limb loss and survive. The amount of blood lost in the injury might be connected?

ive seen this happen alot too, but when they keep fighting instead of crawling away, they almost always tend to be females.

ok, here goes. this idea is based on several things.

1- military dwarves on year round training will not socialize
2- dwarves who do not socialize will not get married
3- non married dwarves do not have babies

if i am wrong about any of these things, the idea will not work, so here goes;
draft most if not all unmarried females into the military. Give their squad the best weapons and shields you can get and NO ARMOR. The only ones who will survive to legendary status are the strongest, toughest, and fastest. When they do, remove them from the military, upon which i believe they will refuse to do ANY work other than socializing. This should have them marrying and popping out strong, rough and tough babies in relatively short order.

please shoot holes in this theory before i waste a shit ton of time trying it.

Most believe this is to protect them from going insane during childbirth, but that's irrelevant to this post.
And another study has shown that childbirth is only a fraction as painful as getting kicked in the ☼gold nuggets☼
a study performed by dr fake for fullashit university with a grant from Santa.

In real world humans, females for the most part have higher pain thresholds than males. Most believe this is to protect them from going insane during childbirth, but that's irrelevant to this post.
What IS relevant is that i've been noticing my female soldiers tend to shrug off serious wounds and stay in combat FAR more frequently than the males do. Not only that, but they seem to be released from the hospital FAR sooner as well. I've had males retreat after being stabbed in the hand, while females continue to fight whilst spurting blood from a freshly cleaved limb.

is there something in the RAWs that accounts for the real world pain tolerance of women or is this just a LONG co-incidence?

I like to take 2 dwarves and just make them do cleaning, so no one else in the fort has to fuck with it.

In preperation for this thing, i've been trying to run my current fort into a glorious end to get used to it, in hopes of being able to pull off a good one.
So far, i've got 2 soldiers who are using iron armor, wooden shields, and steel swords, along with about 30 using wood shields and misc axes. We've driven away simply HUGE sieges with minimal losses for about 3 years in a row now with no traps or nothing. I've been at this for about 4 days now.
If this timeline holds out once im playing this game we're planning, it's gonna make it REALLY tough for me to meet the 10 day deadline.

any advice in how to go out in a blaze of glory without breaching the hidden fun stuff?

does this need it's own thread?
