DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Two-handed weapons

I get to thinking about mount and blade: warband.

Why? Because the weapons have all these modifiers. Chipped, rusted, cracked, shortened, tempered, heavy, thick ... a whole world of customization and individuality to the different items.

Wouldn't it be nice? Tell the weaponsmith to "shorten that halberd" or "sharpen that sword" .. "repair that helmet"
it COULD be, but it might also get really irritating having swords that dull and helmets that break.

I have a notepad full of stuff like that... I don't use paper sometimes if I have my laptop open next to my desktop but often I don't so I just use a notepad.

300-page college ruled, I've had it for a few years and am 3/4 through it, full of DF notes over the years.
i bet that'd make a good, if confusing read.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / memory tricks?

so i do the same thing everytime. I start a fort with a great idea in mind. I'll get it all set up and running well. everything is going swimmingly. Then, for one reason or another, i don't play for a few days, sometimes up to a week. Then, when i try to start playing that fort again, i can't remember WHERE anything is, WHAT anyone was doing, WHO is important to the fort, WHAT the hell I was trying to accomplish with some of this stuff, and WHY there is vomit/blood/kittens all over the place.

I'm totally on point while im playing every day, but after 4 or 5...
not so much.

I've tried laying out all my forts about the same, but even then, i can only come so close and i still lose track of things.

do you good folks have any tips for me?

A bug? In real life, do people butcher dead animals for eating? I hope not *sick*

you'd be shocked, disgusted, horrified, and wracked with guilt if you saw the kind of wicked things that go on with our food.

shells are AWESOME. you can make them into trade crafts, helmets, gloves, and boots i think.
shell armor is either the same as leather or a TEENY bit better, but it takes WAY less effort to get shells than it does to get leather.

within the first year, ill dig a shaft down to the magma sea, just to find out how deep it is.
If it's fewer than 60 lvls down, i go straight for the candy as well.

although even in that scenario, ill still make a few bars of steel (along with every other metal possible), just to fulfill mandates.

make them all masons.
have them spend a year churning out blocks.
build something HUGE.

well, my favorite way is FAR from the best way, but here it is:

I like to use outnumbered, under-trained, under-equipped military.
we don't often do well, but it's AWESOME!

ive even started using a uniform thats just loincloths, wood shields, steel helmets, leather boots and cloak, and misc melee weapon.

i might loose the loincloths...

i try and go half and half.
I put all the major bedrooms, workshop areas, storage, and whatnot all on about 5 lvls.
best of both worlds.

sounds like its time for you to learn the joys of wooden shields and silver maces. train em enough and they'll be fine.

well not fine, but the combat will be WAY more epic.

or, you know, you could go straight for the blue stuff...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Large gems. I need help
« on: October 21, 2011, 08:48:01 pm »
i cant believe after playing the game THIS LONG i still have to make threads like this.

ok, what's the freakin deal with large gems not going into stockpiles.

i've got 6 or so sitting around next to where the gem shop used to be with a stockpile that ONLY accepts large gems not 10 squares away.
I have 34 idle dwarves, and NONE of them will stock them.
As an experiment, i tried dumping one of them and like clockwork, urist came and got it. WTF?!

i also seem to have the same problem with totems as well as the issue that unless they're in a bin with something else, totems will not show up on the trade screen.

help?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: best bin/barrel material other than wood
« on: October 19, 2011, 04:39:07 am »
Slight derail: Poindexterity, why wooden shields? I figured metal would be better. Is there some quirk of game mechanics that makes wooden shields the best option?

cause material doesn't matter for shields. Also shield use, ive found to be the most important skill for a surviving military, so i like to start training them in it EARLY.
