DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had

Oh nice, dwarven alcohol now makes my miners more clever! *designates wide area for channeling* Ah, the joy of watching them not killing each other and themselves...
WAIT YOU ARE ON THE WRONG SI-
"A section of the cavern has collapsed!"
"Urist McSuicide has suffocated to death."

Sigh.

I really like the organic growth idea; moreso because my fortress always ends up very, uh, practical. I just do as I do, usually following economic approaches like "workshops - near 'finished goods' stockpile - near depot - near surface", but no fortess looks like the other. One time I decide to create one big "forge" area for all my metally needs, the other time I dig out "shopping streets" where every workshop has its own room and door.

As for the living area: I use 2x2 rooms for everyone; bed cabinet, chest. Usually its a 2 tile wide corridor with five 2x2 rooms on each side, but quite a lot of space beteen the rooms to upgrade them to 5x5 rooms or add another room or two. Thats easily done with two macros (one for designating the area, one for placing furniture).
Once my fortress progresses, certain dorf "earn" the right for a better room - Ill use the space for rooms and upgrades, like personal weapon racks/armor stands for great soldiers, a dining room for couples...

You could say I play Sim-Dwarf at that stage and I really like the diversity in the end :) The basic rooms are done in 2 minutes, and the natural growth comes as time comes.

Dear Urist McHammerswing!

Im grateful to hear of your recovery. As a blacksmith you are precious for everything slightly dwarven, and I really like your beard. It conecerned me deeply to hear stories about your withdrawl from society, brooding over some serious problems. But it seemed you solved it and overcame your serious thoughts.

But please note:
If you ever happen to brood over plans for an artifact floor grate again, make sure you dont use up our platinum bars and only two sapphires. If something like this ever happens again, Ill personally enlist you as avaliable artifact material for other dwaves.

Hasta la vista,
your supreme whiplasher without two sapphires.

"Moron McHauler has died of thirst". Wait...he was my legendary armorsmith, how come. By checking - he walled himself in with a statue, ironically right next to the booze stockpile. Faces and palmes, dear Watson.

Does sweetbread burn well? Im curious if I could weaponize it indirectly - as fuel for a fire pit.

Im in for beautifully and carefully brewed beer. Or fruit liqor, for vitamins. Very dwarfenly. If you need iron, just get a pick, hematite and suck it a bit! The possibilities are endless! *tries to teach his dwarfs to eat stones from now on*

As a med.stud. I always have to shake my head at those plant vs. meat discussions. One of my profs once said: "We are not omnivores, but anyvores." (pardon the translation) which means that we can basically eat everything and metabolize it in some way, even toxines and inert substances. Discussing the best diet is moot, because there is none. Its all a question of ethics, lifestyle, preferences and "Dosis sola venenum facit" (The dose makes the poison).
I'd limit what can me metabolized in significant quantities to water, salts, organic compounds and ammonia derivatives (yeah, there's a lot of overlap). CO, H2S, H2O2, and lots of other poisons are more 'survived' than 'metabolized'.

Welcome to B12. Now drown in MAGMA. (More often we say "Congratulations! You drowned in MAGMA for your first time, Welcome to B12.)

Thanks a lot, I finally managed to register after 3 Years (!). At least Im legendary +5 at stalking threads now!

And yes, you are ofc right, I wanted to point out that the human body is much too complex and adaptive, so one cant say "Eat this and everything is alright." Im looking at both sides, I had my fair deal of discussions in that regard, even with nice people. Seeing b12 derailing into flaming tells me again that you cant argue about tastes.

And for the topic: I absolutely despise eating everything organic :D Maybe some form of occupational disease, because I cant stand the thought of eating something knowing what....stuff was synthesized or metabolized in it.
