I'm personally holding out for Civil Engineers.

That's never a good idea with Bay12.  We already have trouble with fracturing, if we intentionally fracture then that'll just be the end.

Gaining levels, gaining gold.  Trying to get characters in garrison for passive exp gain, as it'll pay off eventually.  I'm also debating some character build types for different uses and ordered progression, so that I know where to assign stat points even if I've forgotten who the character is.

When I was starting to make chainmail, people were talking how to price things they make.  People claimed to sell an item for $20 because it took them an hour to make, and this is handcrafted items not minimum wage, and to mark up a bit for market and fees and such.  The claim was "If you spend an hour working on this, then you should sell it for at least $8 because that's minimum wage."  No one mentions that you can be doing this while watching TV or listening to audiobooks or talking to your girlfriend or whatever.  AND that's like saying that any time you spend doing ANYTHING needs to be balanced against how much money you could be making if you were working at the time, in which case how do you find the time to write an article/forum post if you could be spending that time working at mcdonalds and making more money?!

Trebuchet built using individual parts based on actual physics, not just a 'trebuchet item' but a large macro build.  Time to build some terrifying dwarven siege machines!

... paypal does straight credit cards without an account...
This is correct.  Paypal performs a middleman service, where paypal tugs money out of your bank account, then pushes the money to the merchant (in this case, Rimworld) minus a bit of transaction fee.  I know a lot of people get wiggy with Paypal because of the uncertain ways they claim "When you put money in your paypal account, it's ours, but you can use it if we feel like letting you" but this doesn't work like that.  It's a one-off transaction where Paypal is functioning more as a card reader than a banking service.

Not that I'm at the level to be capable of doing anything with them
Be level 8, have some bricks and wood and stuff.  You can store it in the garrison itself and use it, so you can make multiple trips.  You'll see the option to build, as long as there's no city or tower/fort/castle in the surrounding 8 tiles.

So I picked up two potions of diffusion. Any idea what they do?
It cleanses negative effects from one characters, like curse or silence.

It becomes a tradeoff.  You can get more single-character exp, but it takes longer to win fights, so you get less exp-per-turn.  It's less efficient to specialize.  Ideally, you want as many swords chopping the enemy as you can get, because that'll end battles quicker and let you roll through more enemies.  But if you have a lot of characters in garrison, you can earn a lot of exp passively too...  Problem is that garrisons are expensive to construct.  Lots of brick and lumber and such, which is not free.  When my city is going a bit better, I'll probably start building garrisons for other people to take over, but that'll be in the future, because it's some significant dumping of money.

You can place a garrison at level 6.  They will stand there, and fight monsters and/or players that walk onto the tile.  At level 8 you can build structures, namely a tower/fort/castle, market provides gold, barracks provide exp, and seals of resistance/attack/defense raise those values for the garrisoned characters.  It's a long-term game, but you can leave decent characters on garrison and forget about them, then return to find them higher level.  Just scroll through your party list daily to see who's leveled up and assign their stat points.

I'd suggest making a build of character for permanent garrisons.  You end up with 24 skill points and a cap of 10 per skill, so you can max berserk, shield bash, and have 4 points left over, which I'd suggest putting around between metallurgy, fletching, medicine, and tactics, as these will help keep the garrison upright without you having to visit and refit their gear.  You might also make a character with maxed construction, con, and str to play a mule, who you can use to build things, carry bricks, and collect the garrison's loot.  Finding a level 1 warrior with max con/str isn't hard in the recruit offices, and you can give them rings of +con or +movement.

Awareness is great for a true priest.  Rack of the Div, max your awareness, you do pretty well.

War Cry is useless, it raises your accuracy, which at any meaningful level isn't worth much because you'll always hit.

It's useful to start a wizard, and level them up with strategy, tactics, and then 4 points of leadership.  These have effects in party, your wizard can focus int, and then you make them a mayor, where these skills are also put to use.

You can attack twice with a two hander if you're hasted.
Well, yeah...

You also can't make three attacks with an archer if the archer is hasted.  They get 2 attacks every other round, but with haste will attack every single round.
