This thread reminds me... I finally managed to see an episode of Samurai Jack again, after a long time of not seeing it. It is an awesome series, a lovely blend of quirky humour and preeeeeetty intense action sometimes. There's just something about it that's really different from many other cartoons, though that possibly only includes the ones i've seen. Also it has an angry scotsman teamed up with a samurai. Can't ever go wrong with that. :P

PD: It's any method to do good curves?
On top of what the other chaps said, i have a few tips about this! Or rather, one tip. Maybe two. ANYWAYS, a neat way to do curves is to first draw the line free-hand, then smooth it out on a pixel scale afterwards. Takes a bit of time, but you'll get really neat lines like that. FOR EXAMPLE:

It takes some practice, obviously, but you can reach almost bezier curve-like smoothness given enough time, and you keep the organic look of free-hand drawing, AND it takes a lot less time than drawing that curve pixel by pixel. Also, another thing to keep an eye out for: JAGGIES.

Always strive to make a smooth transition between the stair steps, so to say. It's a small detail, but in pixel art, the whole damn image consists of small details, so yeah.

SEEMS LEGIT

Except for me, you can substitute caffeine with excessive inspiration. :P

Okay I think I've actually got this AU Terra sprite looking pretty acceptable. Hopefully, it's noticeable that she's wearing a sort of light breastplate and bracers instead of the leotard from her original appearance. And if I was very, very lucky, she gives an impression of her eyes being cold and empty, as she's wearing a Slave Crown here, but I may be projecting what I envision onto the actual image there. Anything I need to clean up, general tips, etc.? The armor isn't very interesting, since that's just a recolor of the original sprite with more dakka (itself recolors from other sprites), but I can't really imagine what else to do with it.

Ok so question: Made from scratch or modified? Because if it's from scratch, then that's really awesome. In any case, it's a bit hard to see the details of such a relatively dark sprite against this glaringly bright background. Any chance of getting a zoomed-in version (as in x2 size with no interpolation)? Easier to see the details that way, and thus easier to give actual useful feedback. :U

Running dog.
I LIKE THIS

If i have to nitpick though, it kind of irks me how the head has a static moment in between all the movement. Ideally, you'll want every single part of the sprite to be in motion during something like a run (like you did with the rest of the body), it doesn't even have to be all that big a motion. A tutorial once told me that a single pixel of movement can add a whole lot of life to the sprite! That's not to discredit the rest of the dawg though, it's a lovely run-cycle. c:

also yesterday i took 15 minutes to practice some BODY LANGUAGE via stickmen

Fairly interesting practice actually, since i'm used to drawing most of the expression via faces. The lack of a face complicates that notion. (and yes i know they're neither proportionally or anatomically correct, they're stickmen)

edit: also faces

Reminds me of this. Probably sounds like it, too,
NGHGNGHNGHNNGN

Just when nature couldn't get any cuter, it throws a squeaky ball of frog at us. The cutest squeaky frog ball ever, to be exact. I SHOULD DRAW SOMETHING MANLY TO RESTORE MY TESTOSTERONE but i don't know what. A dragon that breathes hammers? It'll have to wait though, the bed is calling to me..............

it should go without saying but i, as always, will suggest DRAW MORE DINOSAURS AAA

OR! Draw the most insane and illogical monster you can think of. It's always fun to push the boundaries of your own imagination.

Also, totally forgot to respond to Jopax in the heat of the moment aaa
The Dino looks spiffy as ever, have you thought about doing the comics in color? On a weekly basis or something?
That is an interesting idea, actually. Maybe two a week? That'd be far less exhausting, while still allowing plenty of time to pen tool it up and maybe add colours. Not quite sure about the colours or whether i should... STICK to the stickman style, but hey, all in due time!

So I suppose the main focal point of this was learning how to shade better. As it turns out all I know how to do is transition colors well then use the smear too and mix them.

Initially I was going to draw a rose, but they looked hard as hell, so I drew a tulip. Only after did I realize that I gave the tulip a rose stem. fack.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Lol'd at the stem part, haha. Looks quite good actually, though i have to say that the flower itself looks a bit dark and dull for a flower, mostly in terms of colour. Tulips in particular tend to have rather vibrant colours, so this is one of the rare cases where one should be careful with the darker colours. The stem looks excellent though, great work!

@Jopax: Aww, thanks for the kind words! I giggled when you said that "random internet dude" bit, because it made me realize how awkward it must be to suddenly and without warning be blasted with the insecurities of a completely random dude you've never met. So, sorry 'bout that, i get emotional pretty easily. :P

In light of this, i decided to finally slap some shading on that detectosaurus i posted earlier.

Already working on that, though for me it's more a matter of gathering up courage to tell people out there in reality about my artsy fartsy tendencies than economy.
INCOMING INSECURE RAMBLING (which you need not concern yourself too much about)

---

For some odd and inexplicable reason, i feel EXTREMELY apprehensive about it, even though i kind of want to get it out of my system (because constantly thinking about it is actually kind of stressing me out). I suppose part of the reasoning is that the irrational part of me is saying HOW WILL PEOPLE REACT? The rational part of me is somewhat underpowered in comparison to the irrational part, even though it does say that me and my bro have VERY similar mindsets, so he'd probably respond in a positive manner. I mean, i think his escapades in web developing were pretty cool, so why wouldn't he think the same of my artings? It's not quite as clear with regards to my parents, even though i recall that my dad seemed pretty proud back when i dabbled in 3D stuff. Some years have passed since then, but surely he can't have changed that much? It's also not a sure bet with my friends over at uni, but they've generally been extremely accepting of my antics, and the response i got from revealing my game in progress was downright overwhelming in its positivity. Would the response be the same for my artings? That's what i'm concerned about. It might be that there's something wrong with me, but i am terrified of rejection. So much so that merely wondering if i unwittingly have done something minor that would make one of my friends dislike me makes me feel bad.

AND HERE COMES THE IRRATIONAL PART: Since my brain has realized that doing what i already do without changing is acceptable to others, why would i throw myself out into things that could endanger this acceptance? I know i've received positive feedback from the internet, but the unavoidable fact is that it's much harder to tell people something face to face than it is to just write it and press "post". On the internet, i have time to consider my words and responses. When speaking to someone, everything happens MUCH faster, and although i can engage in random talking with my friends, i still fear that i might accidentally say something wrong. I have a feeling that i am much more emotionally unstable than my peers, so they'd probably not really care if i accidentally said or did something dumb, and the worst possible thing that could realistically happen is that they just wouldn't be interested, which objectively isn't a big deal. So why am i so apprehensive about it?

...

Irrational reasons. It's just a matter of overcoming them, and this rambling has actually helped me getting closer to that. It also displays my highly developed ability to digress. :P (also fondness for mood whiplash)

I do love your linework Shook, so clean *o*
Thanks man! Apparently this pen tool really does work, because otherwise my linework is scratchy and rather wibblywobbly. :U (though i s'pose it's worth noting that i draw with a mouse and high sensitivity)

Also, 20 minutes? Hot damn, that's amazing (both for the time taken and the actual quality)! Those doodles you see links to right up there? They're what i can do in a similar time frame. >.>
I totally get what you mean about that creative energy bsnss, though i typically get it late at night when i should be sleeping. In the mornings where i have to go to classes, i'm generally just busy hating my being awake at that time of the day. :P

BY THE SWEET AND SOUR MINERALS FOUND IN EVERY DARK CORNER OF THE EARTH

That is an excellent and awesome piece of music. Do you know how awesome it is? I get the epic-chills from listening to it, because it evokes such epic imagery in my head. NOT MANY SONGS DO THAT TO ME. :D

@Ricky: Ay that's pretty cool yo! I have to wonder though, what's the red ring on the planet? Red Ring of Doom indicating a planet that doesn't support life? :P
Also, our sun is a star. Basically just draw stars like you'd draw the sun, except way smaller/more distant, and by proxy, dimmer. Basically shiny little dots.

Oh yeah, i managed to pick up the pen tool in GIMP and actually brawl it to give me a neat outline out of the previous dinosaur doodle i posted.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
now it just needs some shading and everything will be acceptable

you are a crazy person and i love you for that

c:

Also Ricky that looks like... A thermal image of a magma fall!! It's pretty rad actually, the colours strike me as pleasing. As for drawing things... Well i dunno, i just draw outlines and hope for the best. I suppose it helps to study things as well. I'm really not the most qualified person to talk about anything. :P

regardless here's a dinosaur sketchdoodle

Oh don't worry, i'm not done making comics. It's just like that short time after sex where you actually wouldn't fancy another round. :P

2174
Nah that's just me being lazy, doing all those comics in a row was more exhausting than i thought. Also gathering courage to start working on them during the day.

this guy kills you

Also, i finally managed to make super shots behave as they should, by means of having a fixed quotient of enemy health to be able to kill/pierce (though the last one always dies). This means that at the moment, one super shot can blow up 10 wedges as opposed to an unlimited number, and only 3 yellow sentries. Also, i've begun rebalancing enemy point value, so you shouldn't be getting quite as rich in the later waves. ;o
