General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.
« on: February 08, 2018, 10:07:32 am »
Oh Cinder you boob, you've gone and burned yourself out. :v
So anyways, let me tell you a few things: First of all, when you say you aren't improving, that is complete and utter bollocks, i see a very significant improvement during your thread from start to end (especially during the drawabox arc). It's a very gradual process, often so gradual that you can't see the progress yourself before you compare the present to 4 years ago. I know i often find myself looking for "breakpoints" in my own gallery, only to be disappointed that i can't really find any. It hurts sometimes, it truly does, and i get why you feel like you do. You just gotta remember, feelings aren't always in tune with reality, and that you are your own harshest critic. It's a delicate fucking balance between being okay with what you do, while still realizing that you can always learn. If you consider everything you draw flawless, you won't improve, but if you think it's all trash, you'll be disheartened. Consider both what you did well and what could be improved, and at the same time, allow yourself to have fun. Draw silly things that make you laugh and smile, and even if you believe you've failed miserably, you can have a giggle at how badly you think it went. Dark humour is the saviour of many a dark situations. :v

I know i might be preaching to the choir here, but with how much joy drawing has brought me, it saddens me to see others get disheartened about it, especially when they've gotten so far. I get that you're probably burnt out right now, and it's totally okay to take breaks, however long they may be. I also get that i may have been... Less than diligent at commenting on your stuff, and for that i am sorry, but know that i'll be happy to see you get back to it, whenever that may be.

Ouf, reminds me of last year when i was naught but a few millimeters off of having a rusty nail driven into my heel. I was shuffling around outside in a narrow area, helping dad build a new side-shed, when i felt something on my heel like a pebble in my shoe. Turns out i had stepped on a little wooden piece with said nail in it sticking out, and it was jammed so far up the heel of my shoe that it could be felt on the inside. It was pretty firmly stuck, what with it having pierced like 2 cm of rubber sole, so thank goodness it didn't quite make it through. :V

Ooo, what a nice dump to be surprised by just as i get ready to write a reply. :v

Ok so beginning from one end, that is a very nice walk cycle, plenty of swagger and livelyness in there. From a realism standpoint it's probably a bit odd to have the arms that far out, but this is obviously not intended to be maximum realism. :P

That map making tool is looking really neat! I'm reminded of Darwinia with the current look, though textures will proooooobably change that.

The pixely things are also looking good; i particularly like the little guy in the lower left of the second one. If it's what i think it is (vaguely lizardy face with big eye and sharp toothy things in front), it's adorable. :V

Mm, nice. That is a big-ass stone squid god. :v

yeah, i tried looking at tutorials but most of them have a lot of steps and are done in photoshop which i barely use so it looks like a royal pain to do.

anyways, i finished the flag set i was missing for the project. this is the Southern Hemisphere collage (?):

I like the middle-left one with the rising sun motive, it's pleasing to me. Also, the middle-right one reminds me a lot of Greece. :v

I love the Dire Birb Shook. Much more friendly than a flock of Dire Pigeons though. Quieter and less messy too.
Thanks! Also yes, fuck dire pigeons. Imagine a regular pigeon poo, but then make it dire. That means bigger and probably also corrosive. NOBODY WANTS THAT ON THEIR CAR.

also here have a snooty thing with an experimental simple abstract background

I call it a siakal. :v

Mm, good stuff, nice warm colours for my eyes to enjoy. c:

Oh thanks ! That would be an easy fix, but for other reasons I think I'll stop the drawing here. I'm satisfied with the sketch, but I probably should not use that method to paint characters.

Edit : Remember this unedited post where I said I wouldn't continue that pic
I lied
sorry

Well, this has to be one of the best lies i have been exposed to in a while, nice job. :U
The one thing that bothers me ever so slightly is that the knee crease(??) of his stomping leg seems too visible for that particular perspective. The thigh and calf look fine, but the knee kinda looks like it's bending the wrong way. That besides, looking hella good!

also more doodlings

Oof, my mood just went completely down the drain for little to no reason. I'm not crying, but it's dangerously close. Accompanying this is a whole host of bad thoughts, though thankfully no suicidal ones. I feel like a complete and absolute failure, a useless fool, a pretentious moron who won't ever get anywhere in life and the sterling example of wasted potential. Like i can't even do anything right, like i should just give in to depression and slowly fade out of existence, because nobody will even fucking notice (... besides my immediate relatives). Logically i know that all of these are wrong, but emotionally... Holy shit. I've been down in the dumps before, but this is BAD. I hope this is gone tomorrow, else i'm in for a bad time.

It does! Too many visible eyes to truly be that style, though. Still plenty to be proud of in that piece in spite of that. ;)

also floofnoodle

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is swordnoodle's mom. I tried giving her a flowy-wispy appearance to go with the fact that she's the most powerful air dragon out there. :v (also note: the above is not her TRUE FORM(tm), it is a cleverly downplayed disguise)

what he's gonna do is FIGHT YOU OF COURSE

I'm still trying to get the hang of digital arts. Not that my pencil work is much better.

It feels like I'm fighting the tablet sometimes, so the smudging is my poor attempt to either blend colours or hide my preliminary outlines without getting rid of them completely.

Anyways, hopefully this isn't too bad. My art marks aren't stellar.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ooo, cool scene! The smudging is much more subtle here, and that makes it look a lot nicer to me. As for struggling with the tablet, trust me, that's just a matter of practice. At some point it'll basically become second nature, and then you don't have to worry about hiding little flaws (which you shouldn't be doing anyways).

and here's where i'd normally post a doodle but it turned out terribly so you'll have to make do with this silly little animation i made to explain to people what caev means

That seems to be the appropriate expression for a dorf. :v

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
HMMMMMMMMMMM

The smudging needs some more practice, but you got it pretty nicely on the rightmost snowy mountain. From what i understand, smudging is generally to be used carefully, as it's otherwise going to be plenty obvious that it's used uh... Everywhere. There are some places where the texture it gives is perfect, but it just doesn't work for everything. That said, the motives you have going are really cool, so i'm looking forward to seeing more. c:

Shook, I feel like your digital work might benefit from a bit more focus on line weights. You do it on paper, but it seems to have been lost in translation. :(
Yeah, true, but the problem is that i chiefly base my line weight on the shading (dark areas get heavier lines etc), and with the digital style i'm using, it's rather tricky to change line weight after the lines have been placed, and i typically don't think of shading until after i've more or less finalized the lines. Admittedly i could benefit from at least doing it based on distance, but i'm kind of a lazy shit when it comes to changing pen size. :V

also introducing a quick doodle that i ended up liking

Spoiler: legsnek (click to show/hide)

I'm almost starting to enjoy pencil more than digital. :P

The only appropriate response is for Shook to draw a digital fruit.
BWEHEHEHEHEH these are old though

They're usually anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours. I don't hate myself enough to do 30 minutes and don't have the attention span for 4 straight hours, so ~2ish is a nice compromise for practicing landscape/scenery composition and a target for tightening the process up so I get a decent image faster. The two previous scenes I did took a lot more time and didn't look as good so I think I'm getting somewhere!

I'd be interested in seeing the fruits of your digital process
Ah, i see, and yes, you are most certainly getting somewhere. :v

also while i work on sleeping so i can get to my display tablet tomorrow i decided to power up the demonthing with pencil anyways because nights aren't for sleeping are they

Gonna be fun comparing it to digital. :V

2.5 hours is a speedpaint? Man that makes me an impatient guy. :v
In any case, i fucking love that. Perspective is on point, colours are great, composition seems neat to my untrained eye and it's just plain done well. Heckin' rad job! :D

also i decided to shine up the pointysaurus from before and also sketched a demon face

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Maybe going to try digitally refining the demonface, that's something i haven't really done much.

Oh man, i seem to be slowly regaining the ability to doodle absent-mindedly! I know that sounds like a total given to just about anyone with functional hands, but fact is that i have, for a long time, had a lot of difficulty drawing anything without a very clear idea in my head. Definitely related to anxiety, and now that i finally seem to actually be winning the constant fight against said anxiety (which is also a major happy, albeit a more long term one than a burst of euphoria), i also seem to slowly be overcoming that block. 2018's off to a good start! :v

Definitely looks better than last time, though part of me wants to say that the highlights could be even MORE prominent. This is obviously not mirror-polished metal though, so you get a pass. :v

somebody call the dovahkiin!

I did a twitter poll and monster girls w/guns won, so...

dragon be using the dreaded FUK YO MAM shout :V

Also very nice work! The lips bother me ever so slightly; possibly because they look kinda rough compared to the smoothness of everything else. O well lol, minor detail.
