DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Common Dwarf(y) knowledge

Ah, but that'd be when they disassemble the wall. Building a wall takes a short enough time that only a single panel is needed. Tearing it down, however, requires several hours worth of mad glaring! (that, and i generally only operate with four panels at a time)
Regardless, extended and much creepier version.

You know we can't have a long, mindless stare without some kind of horrifying realization. It also serves to illustrate my point that, deep down inside, all dorfs are batshit insane alcoholic maniacs.

@Elu: That right there is a fantastic idea. We all know how weird dorfs are, but it's been illustrated too few times. AIN'T SO SUCH FING AS ENUFF ILLUSTRASHUNS.

Edit: Also, nightmare/mindfuck edition. Caution; long.

Capybaras aren't a problem for any mildly skilled military dorf, but giant capybaras will fuck your shit up. Especially the undead ones. Those are so nasty that i seal off my fort while they're anywhere near. To put things in perspective: My axedorf had killed scores of undead capybaras and their humanoid cousins (most of them popped up in medium-sized groups too), only getting nicked on one hand once. I then think of sending him to deal with the undead giant capybaras. Shortly after, he and his pieces were resting in a massive pool of dwarven blood, generated by the savage interaction between humongous rodent incisors and not-so-tough dorf meat. I'm not sure if he got in a single strike before getting torn apart.

So yeah, giant capybaras. They may not be badgers, but DAMN those are some sharp teeth.

@IT 900 and Necro: Thanks! I quite enjoyed drawing scribbling it as well. I was snickering like hell while drawing the third dorf panel in particular. Call me mad if you want, but remember that you people can talk about weaponizing babies and laugh at the same time. :P

Also, new theory on how dorfs build walls (and possibly other things).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They simply gaze at it with that thoughtless smile until it autonomously assembles itself. Even females wear that face all the time, so surely they can do it as well. Different kinds of thoughtless smiles would be required for different jobs, hence the still-remaining professions. Carpenterface, masonface, metalsmithface... You name it, the dorfs have someone who can do it! If the gaze itself fails, they just revert to smashing their chiseled visage into the resistant object, until satisfactory results are achieved.

What a wonderfully psychotic expression that guy brain surgeon wears. :D
Also, this happened in fort mode to my singular axedorf.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At first, the buzzard was above him, so he obviously couldn't attack. It then went down to the ground, where it scored dozens of misses, before it occurred to the dorf that it was actually attacking him, and that he probably should destroy it with a few well-placed hits. If he hadn't been a proficient dodger, that buzzard could probably have killed him before he reacted.

Can't be assed drawing it myself, but here's the description, for those who are interested. :P

It even has a few kills, courtesy of my hunter at that fort.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Option to disable the bogeymen?

Supposedly, you can generate a world without bogeys in advanced worldgen, by setting the number of night beast types to 0. I've not tried this myself, but i've seen it mentioned multiple times already. Otherwise, just become so legendary that they stop trying.

Well, let me get the description of a Adamantine Scepter I got in one of my fortress.

"This is a Raw Adamantine Scepter. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled  with bands of Andesite, Honet Yellow Beryl, Emerald and Wax opal. This object is adorned with hanging rings of tentacle demon bone and menaces with spikes of Emerald. On the item is an image of a cloud in Raw adamantine.
On the item is an image of Utes Menacedtrusted the demon in tentacle demon bone. Utes Menacedtrusted is striking a menacing pose. The artwork relates to the release of the demon Utes Menacedtrusted by careless miners in the deepest recesses of Tubechambers in the midspring of 228.
On the item is a image of a lizard in cave spider silk."

Btw, this is THE coolest artifact I ever got. It was back in 40d and right after I breached -fun- the mason went nuts and started picking the raw adamantine i dumped next to his shop (I dind't planned that).  It was named "Egenazon Osreshlikot, Gifteddepress the Mortified Ink", and is worth 783.600 dwarf bucks.
Rarra, so many small details! But hell, your damned fine axe drawing inspired me. I can't do free-hand very well, so you'll have to do with a sprite. :P

Freud was right.

<.<

But, in the spirit of keeping this excellent thread alive...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm interested in seeing how one would make a floodgate out of dog bone, which somehow refers to two other artifacts, one of which coming from a previous fort in the same world!

Or full on blasting beards of extreme dorfiness. They are dorfs, y'know!
Also, this is why i only draw stick figures.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's how i envision dorfs drinking, but sometimes the dorf is on top.

Them's some hella dorfy humans, there!

Also, probably my own dad, or our neighbor. Both have a tendency to plan and build things seemingly at random; the neighbor builds more stuff, but my dad enjoys creative destruction and explosions. We once had a window of glass to be scrapped. Instead of safely breaking it with a hammer or something, he decided that we should prop it up in our carport and throw stones at it. Fun, but deafeningly loud. My ears rang and hurt afterwards. :P (also our other neighbor popped up to check out what the hell was going on)

Yoink! I must be insane, for i am amused by the thought of shielding the babies' falls by means of fortifications.

This is the first time i've been moderately horrified by you guys. Then again, it's not like REAL babies are being dropped off a bridge into a room full of green recruits. I'd probably go with Spiral's idea though, puppies and kittens are much more abundant than babies in my forts. :P

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress VS. Minecraft
« on: May 06, 2011, 11:18:06 am »
Neither is better than the other if you ask me, they both have their own niche, and i'm a fan of both. The crucial difference? In Minecraft, you build, kill and get killed. In DF, you lord over dorfs that all do this (and have better magma physics). Although i really enjoy the level of detail in DF, i sometimes wish i could take on the world from a Minecraft perspective, and vice versa. I swear, if these two games ever had a bastard child, i would forget that i'm a man and shriek so loudly in joy that the government comes checking for aliens. And it would be WORTH IT. I'm slightly inclined to prefer DF over Minecraft right now though, since it's free. :P (the learning curve is more like a learning wall though)

TL;DR: both games have qualities that the other doesn't

Can confirm same message on living enemies.  Coins just don't seem to hit people.
Indeed. I've tried throwing coins on several occasions, but they all passed through harmlessly. It's quite weird.

Oh wow, that's awesome! I dare say though, the miner has VERY large... Counterweights. :P
Also, i decided to make a horrible (i mean really, it's bad) sketch of typical dorf combat.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Obviously needs more blood to match the real thing, but hey. I made it in deviantArt Muro. I was going to use the ink tool, but then i saw how much worse it looked, and fell in love with the sketchy appearance. ::)
Also yeah, i realize that the legs of the dorf are switched around. Blame my bad planning for that.
