From a purely IC view, Nikephoros is completely opposed to the idea of slavery, and he will be arguing to set captives free to go home or allow them to settle in Ligoria as serfs, but no slavery.

Besides, there is that 'merciful victor' image that Niko wants to build, and it may be helluva useful later on when we unite the region.

E: Why is Laythe do set on leading the army herself? I don't think she has the commanding stats that could rival mine, and while battle may be a sure thing, its better to be safe than sorry.

Well, i think it should be pretty hard to find one. If there was one in Talama I would have hired him long time ago. But then again, who knows....

SC, this is brilliant. At first I was slightly worried about how my pic will look like, but you clearly know your craft pretty well.

Ok, I will join the bandwagon of requests for avatars as well, for no better reason to simply have one as well.

Nikephoros Vandire:
Average stature, 5'9. Gaunt face and lean but muscly looks. Blue-grey eyes and a crop of short black hair and a small, rough beard and moustache of the same colour.

"If you wish to join the campaign then by all means My Queen. I must advise you to do more watching and learning than actual commanding though. You are quite young and it would be more prudent if you observed me in my role.

Also ,there is small issue of my pay... Not the best of times to discuss that, I know, but nevertheless I can't afford to retire with no money aside. I do not hold any land and don't want to anyway. I simply hope that this old soldier may have a purse for his own bit of spending. "

"Yes my queen. I believe that a surrender can be forced upon the enemy if he is surrounded with superior force and treated generously. A bloodless victory is worth twice the bloody murder in the field and builds a reputation of magnanimity. Under such conditions your standing would be greatly improved and states of Storm Coast would be willing to accept us as a prime power of the region It would show Ligoria to be a competent and noble power.

I do not shy away from ma force solution though. If anything a coalition of the willing has to be assembled under our leadership and enemy defeated in a pitched battle if our situation comes down to it.

In both options we rely on the support of noble contingent and potentially allied states to achieve superiority over our enemy. I believe that you may rely on your vassals to come to field, but Avitus has to make a convincing case to our neighbours for a joint campaign. I assume that I will take to the field as the commander of the overall operation, with you presiding over the alliance."

Nikephoros eventually found out about the invasion of Mileth and spent a long time pondering the reasons and potential outcomes. He eventually came to the conclusion that there is no point in dragging this out any more than it needs to. Queen has to be consulted and a campaign prepared if Ligoria is to finally show its muscle.

Meet with the queen.

Would't it be more prudent to tie the wine production to the seasons? I mean You got grtapes growing only in certain times of the year, and most wime is usually after the harvest, same as with grain according to the seasonal increments. As such the wine production should be dependant on the season, therefore reducing the effective income by at least half. Also, are we talking just winery or a whole wineyard, with fields and whatnot? Because the amount of wine to be sold to make 5d is quite a lot, considering that 5d will buy you couple of regimetns or equals more than taxes from certain places. Therefore having a vineyard technically means land ownership, since you cultivate grapes and you need a lot of hem for the amount of wine that you are selling.

"Fair enough. Since you know Avitus there should be no problem with getting you on the budget list and getting a manufactorum for the gunpowder and guns built. I will try to secure at least one gun for you and get men and a location so you can start. We have winter and the royal treasury isn't in the best shape for now, but I will put you on my priority list. I believe that is all. If anything, come to me directly or speak to Avitus."

With that, Nikephoros went back to his notes.

2830
"Gunpowder? Yes I am looking for people who will be able to manufacture the stuff and outfit me with hand guns and maybe even arquebuses. And I don't mean hunting equipemnt or a decorative piece. I'm talking about hundreds, possibly thousands of pieces for soldiers, and hundreds of barrels of the explosive stuff. Maybe even bombards and mortars. Do you think you would be able to help me with this? Or at least point me in the direction of a useful gunsmith?"

Ok, a full reform may have to wait, but as soon as we recruit and upgrade more soldiers I am ready to march out in summer and squash Terenos. If we could encourage nobles and neighbouring countries to contribute to a common campaign then Ligoria may start posing as a potential hegemon for the Storm Coast.

"As much as I loathe situatins like this, there is power here. We must remain and see what was the purpose that we were summoned here."

May as well die fighting. Dead Man's Command. I run, I get executed for cowardice or incompetence or something.

Now if I could get a larger army, and just go seize that border fort...then I might be in business here!

I would love to capture you and have you dragged in chains behind my horse during a victory parade. That'd be a great way to build popularity with people and soldiers. Other countried would also notice that as well. Unless you go off and commit sudoku on yourself or something.

Ok, Araph, I replied. I just assumed that you were directed to me straight away.

General Vandire was sitting at his desk, full of papers and notes, obviously lost in them as he was drawing up new diagrams and detailed instructions. He did not notice as one of the soldiers announced a guest, which was promptly let in to the room.

After a brief moment, he stopped, noticing someone standing and waiting for him to react.

"Oh, I'm sorry to keep you waiting, I am busy right now. But don't let that stop you. What is it?"
