DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How To Farm in 0.31.x (DF2010)

Once I've made an underground farm by flooding it once, will it ever dry out?

Well, the goblins got their second siege "right".

I never saw so many goblins.  Heck, one group of about twenty just stood back and let loose... mllions of crossbow bolts at my eight-strong "military".  Then they started rampaging through the "fortress", and oh look, they brought trolls with them.  All I could do was put every remaining dwarf in squads, but I thought it was all for naught... I didn't expect the goblins to leave without killing everyone.

No, they left 61 dwarves alive.  61 now tantruming dwarves... blood and parts of things which held blood everywhere.  Including a whole lot of troll blood near the barracks?

Anyway, I abandoned the fort... I'd no idea how to deal with sixty one tantruming dwarves.

The fort I made afterwards was destroyed, almost directly, by... rain.  Rain, of all things.

I've made an underground farm located underneath a murky pool on the surface, like I did with the last fort... I made stairs, and a room below for the water to drain into, etc, etc... so, I breached the wall to flood the farm, all well and good... until it started raining.

Yes, raining.  Unfortunately, it rained for the whole season, without stopping, so I couldn't make the farm below... and we were seriously low on food.  The technical term being "Out".

Eventually, three months later... the rain stopped... I hurried to build walls to seal off the now-drained murky pool....

...and it started raining again.  Before I managed to seal it off.

I am the worst fortress manager ever. :\

Okay, some updates of a sort....

1. I'd kill for a step-by-step newbie tutorial for the 31.18 military system.

2. I managed somehow to make two squads, one with crossbow-armed dwarves and a melee squad, since a good Hammerdwarf came in one of my immigrant waves.  In her squad was a Recruit.

Not long ago, my first ever siege took place!  I saw about ten goblins on a ledge about five levels down from the ledge my main entrance is on (this "fort" is literally carved into the side of a mountainous plateau, right at the top)  I managed to move the two squads near that approach... and waited.

Long story short - Shortest siege I've ever had. The Recruit went into a trance instantly, and looking at the reports, killed two of them with her iron war hammer.... while the Hammerdwarf was biting goblins.  I have a lot to learn still.  The goblins all disappeared... except for two dead ones on the units list.  The goblin leader was a hammerer... and the recruit which bruised every bone in his body was a dabbling hammerdwarf (and Master Fish Cleaner.  Too bad there's nowhere to fish.).  When he died, I guess the other seven or so goblins turned and ran.  Not complaining.

I should probably find out why the Hammerdwarf wasn't using a hammer.

2. As for my issues with the trade depot and crafts, when the next elven caravan showed up, I could move bins of crafts instead of having to do it manually.  No idea what happened - I didn't change any stockpiles or anything.  Maybe this game is just toying with me.

3. I hate my mayor.  All of a sudden his four square bedroom isn't enough for him - he wants full noble quarters!  I made him everything he wanted, out of gold, even.  Well... everything except a.. "crundle horn armor stand"?  I'd literally never seen the word "crundle" before then.  Needless to say, I don't have any, and neither did the human caravan that happened to be visiting.  Heck, I even put the artifact weapon rack I made in his quarters.  Ungrateful bastage.  Fun stuff - his new lover is that Recruit.

4. As for the Tame War dogs... yeah, all my dogs were adopted.  Right now, I have three puppies in cages.

5. Bloody heck, an Architect has gone into a fey mood.  She claimed the craftsdwarf shop, but she wants logs and... body parts.  Fun stuff: She's holding her baby.  We apparently don't have anything she needs.  This will end well.

I'm not doing anything different than I was in the previous (40d?) version - 40d would let me move bins of crafts to the depot (by scrolling down to Crafts); and 31.18 makes me have each craft moved individually, even though they're in bins, too.  Other stuff (blocks, food, bars) can be moved to the depot by their bin or barrel.

That's really odd. Do you have some crafts in bins and others outside bins (lying in the workshop perhaps). Normally all I have to do is [q], [g] the trade depot, scroll down to crafts, and a list of bins will be on my right.

That's just it... on the q --> g screen in the Trade Depot, the crafts aren't listed in their bins like automotically they were in 40d, and everything else that's in bins, is.  There are no crafts lying around - the stockpile isn't anywhere near full and I've got empty bins in my furniture stockpile.  I'll play with it more tomorrow if/when a caravan comes by.

Thanks for the replies, all.

1.  Yes, I'm using the latest Dwarf Therapist... 0.6.7.  I've got 58 dwarves, and only a few had hauling jobs turned off.

3. Oops, I misspoke slightly... what I meant was, when moving them to the Trade Depot, I had to move them individually, and not in their bins like I could in the 24.xx version I had initially learned (ha!) the game with.  Even though I literally watched my dwarves put the finished crafts in bins in the stockpile.

4. I've no cages/chains and I certainly haven't trapped any.  I've got at least one with animal training.  I tried Train Hunting animal, train war animal.  I haven't assigned any dogs as pets, either.

...and I thought I was doing okayish, until tonight.

Let's see what happened so far tonight, in no particular order:

1. A leatherworker went into a secretive mood, but despite the unused and accessible Leather works shop, he didn't claim it; hence insanity, death, and me learning to make coffins.  He didn't appear to have any other skills that needed a different workshop, and i had various leathers in my stockpiles.

2. I've a squad of three marksdwarves, and even using the steps trying to get them to train (assigning bolts, making them inactive/training, setting up archery ranges as seperate rooms, making sure got the direction right, etc); they wouldn't train.  Heck, I even 'm'oved them into the archery range room.

Edit: Scratch that... one of the three was just seen training... but the other two in her squad still said "Cannot follow order".... and now the first one is Cannot follow order again

Not only that, when I told them to Attac'k' a goblin thief before, they did nothing.  They always say "Soldier (cannot follow order)" in the units list. (Searching the forum for that gave me the steps to try in 2 above, but no good.

3. I first tried learning this game with whatever version was in the step-by-step Newby tutorials (very helpful, by the way), and now I'm using 31.18.  Another thing I want to know is, why don't crafts get put into bins/finished goods stockpiles in 31.18?

4. I've got all these Tame stray dogs wandering my fort.. but when I set up a kennel to make these useless Animal Handlers earn their booze, all I get is No animal messages.  What super obvious thing am I missing here?

Sorry for the newbish questions, especially for my first post.  I've read a few awesome threads here. :)
