The thing about any gods actually appearing in the first place is that there would be people who would want to study them. Find out how they work.

Use the divine power ‼science gave them for death and destruction the betterment of mankind.

It would be possible, since as everyone knows

Quote from: Agatha Heterodyne
Any sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from science!

Every time I hear someone pushing abstinence sex ed, I can't help but wonder if they even remember being a teenager.

"Okay kids, all you need to do to be safe is not have sex."

Yeah, like that's going to work.

It will for asexuals. Then again, we don't need such tips in the first place.

Evolution is a variationist theory.
I don't really see what evolution has to do with variations in usage between different speakers of a given language.
Sorry, I've only been reading The Origin of Species in Finnish, I don't know the correct word for "muunnos".

I think we should just stick with the knife. It's nice and personal. If we let him take a flamethrower, next thing we know is he gets a Hummel or somesuch. [/slipperyslope]

You know, even Dice counted from 1939 to 1945. He won his first elections in 1933. That would be DOUBLE the time to stab people in the face.

I wonder how Mr. Munroe would respond to that one...

Try to figure the place out. There are some channeling designations a few levels beneath the quarry level to make the flooded-forge-and-smelter-stuffed-with-adamantine -area accessible again. Most important levers are marked. There are some pieces of gobbo clothing in the drown trap which prevent the outer floodgates from closing, so clear those out if at all possible.

Good luck.

These two girls in my history class were arguing over whether the Mayan calendar was supposed to end on the 21st or 23rd of December, this year. This was brought about by some mention of it in a poorly-made History Channel type video. Anyway, one of them said "I know the world is supposed end on the 23rd because that's what I heard, and that's my mom's birthday". Apparently this was convincing enough evidence for the other girl. They then proceeded to talk about how they were going to attend parties and stuff right before those days. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and assumed they just wanted an excuse to party; I hope they don't actually buy into any of this stupid mass-hysteria.

I really enjoyed the three other ends of the world this year. I wonder how this one will compare.

...Witchcraft!... Khajiiti witchcraft!

My first thought was "Cathar witchcraft!" It's strange that the cathar would come to mind before the Khajiit though...

...now we won't know which ones work and which don't.

't'

The ones that have additional mechanisms in them work. The ones that don't... don't.

Which named dorfs have died?

I think only Mitch died of the named ones.

I've built a new system to replace the axles I had deconstructed at the pumpstack. The new system also includes a single lever which can turn off both pumpstacks.

Also, the two drowned bodies have stopped pushing up miasma.

Obsidian was quite quiet. Good.

Spring has arrived. I have now been in command here for a year, and that is more than enough for me. I found the crundle leather tome at some point, and am now going to pass it on to someone else.

The save is here.

An argument for legalizing adoption for gay couples that will appeal to conservatives: if gay couples can adopt children, more pregnant teenagers know that there is someone willing to adopt the kid, and don't take abortion. Abortion rates go down.

The flood came from somewhere in the pumpstack apparently. Also, I have no idea which lever should control the pumps/floodgates/whatever, due to a lack of notes and the fact that with Erica tantruming all over I've had to replace several levers.

I don't know, that's just what I managed to gather from the codex entry.

Dastotamud Overseer's log
5th of Opal

We have an... issue. The cistern is now full, so all the water being pumped in is overflowing. I'll see what I can do.

6th of Opal

I'm tearing down the axles to the pumps for a quick emergency shutoff, but even so, things could be better. Our broker somehow ended up stranded in a small hole full of water, and has drowned.

For now, his body is inaccessible. Slab will be engraved as soon as possible.

9th of Opal

It seems that the flooded area is still quite unsafe. Mitch has also fallen into the hole, and is drowning.

10th of Opal

Things are not going well it seems. Already 7% of the fortress population has died due to the unfortunate flooding accident.

15th of Opal

I would like to say that the worst of the flooding is over, but it goes on. The water is just moving around now.

Also, a rhesus macaque was caught in one of the weapon traps.

27th of Opal

The bodies are starting to stink up the waterworks.

1st of Obsidian

I will soon have reigned an entire year. Not a good year either. But at least the fort is still alive. To a certain degree.

All you need is a power source that generates power in proportion to it's mass, so that when you hit infinite mass, you get infinite power. (That's not the premise of the Mass Effect games, is it?)

The premise of Mass Effect, as I understood it, is that when you direct an electric current through Element Zero (eezo), it creates a "mass effect field", which either raises or lowers the mass of objects within, depending on whether it's a positive or negative current. With some clever engineering, they can make mass effect fields that reduce a ships apparent mass to zero.

That's how I figure it at least.

As someone who's designed a Turkey Box of Horror to train infant dwarves into scared and powerful killing machines by age 12, I think I can rightfully say that at least half of the Bay12 community knows how to exploit facets of a game by forcing them together until it becomes broken.  Game mechanics are not rules.  They are tools.

I'm going to guess that the fact that Bay 12 places book on ethics and morality under "fiction" is also a large factor on those things being born... We are probably not alone in love for complexity and mechanic exploitation.
