DF General Discussion / Re: What is it that makes the DF community so...
« on: April 23, 2011, 05:03:43 am »I have to argue that single player doesn't filter anything out. I play Supreme Commander online, and the chat room is pretty polite there, SC has an insane learning curve.
The more complex a game, the better, always.
I must say I agree. I also frequent the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. -subforums of the Steampowered Users Forum (SPUF), and it is also quite civil. The reason may well be that it is one of the hardest FPS-games ever made, and you can't just play it like an average FPS game. You try, you die. In a way a lot like Dwarf Fortress, and I have seen people comparing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to DF there on multiple occasions.QuoteSTALKER and Dwarf Fortress have the same idea of fun: they both beat you in the head with it until you have brain damage.
You know, that was one of those games I just narrowly avoided buying because of reading up on how buggy the whole thing was. Maybe I should look back into it...
It is buggy, true, but if you download the Complete-mods for all of them there are much fewer bugs.
And honestly speaking, I think it is the best game ever made, with Dwarf Fortress being a narrow second.
Just my opinion though, some people may think otherwise.
You just posted that, on the dwarf fortress forums.
prep the magma guys.
I saw that coming. And I stand by what I said, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is more immersive, has a much higher chance for Fun, more !!zombies!! and... it has Bloodsuckers...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What have I done wrong
« on: April 22, 2011, 01:19:10 pm »You obviously have not used enough magma. I love magma. Try using more magma. Magma is Fun! Magma is magma. Have I told you I love using magma? You should use magma.
True. If magma is not used, something has been done wrong.

I don't think you can bait them. You just have to build cage traps and hope they wander into them.

DF General Discussion / Re: I've started a tiny project
« on: April 22, 2011, 06:38:47 am »upright spikes don't work that way; they only cause damage when they are activated by an external trigger
Actually, if something falls onto an upright spear or spike that is "active", as in poking out of the ground, it does extra damage, as long as the drop was long enough.

Thanks. Seems like I'll have to train some more war beasts for my Beastmaster-project.
But I would still like to know how to replace yarn.

DF Gameplay Questions / Moving from old to new
« on: April 22, 2011, 05:28:41 am »
So I've been playing my main fort in 0.31.18 for some time now. Finally I've decided to move on, and upgrade to 0.31.25. I have already removed the 'grazer'-tag from elephants (I have over 30) but I realise there is still something I need to get out of the way: yarn. I believe I will be having a hard time getting my hands on some yarn, as nothing that could produce yarn exists in my world as far as I know. This wouldn't disturb me, but as it is, strange moods may require yarn. So, how exactly can I turn, say, elephant leather into a material that would be accepted for those moods? I know I'll have to go through the raws some more, but what will I be doing there?
Thank you in advance.

Edit: In addition I would like to know two more things: Is there anything vital to be done with clay? I dont think I will be having any.
And how can I unassign war beasts from a soldier?
