To the little tunnel rodents who have not yet been kidnapped:

When you see the pervert with the bag over his shoulder, run away from him, towards the fortress.  Not the other way around.

If you show up in a couple years in an ambush, I'll cut you down just like the others, you useless little nitwits.

Yrs Annoyedly,

Kids. It's why we have math.

One Candy Serrated disk hits three times. One fully loaded trap has 10 weapons. Ten times three is thirty. My hall is 15 tiles long. Fifteen times thirty is Four-hundred and fifty. So that is four-hundred and fifty hits.

This is why we made !!Math!!. It's a !!Fun!!damental part of !!Science!!

Fifteen times ten is one-hundred and fifty. One-hundred and fifty candy blocks raise the odds for Fun to about... A lot more than it would be otherwise.

Just place a hatch cover on top of your only entrance to the cotton candy vein.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Boy, That Was A Fast Mood!
« on: April 22, 2011, 04:23:43 am »
It seems weavers have a tendency to go mad. My first mood (ever) was from a weaver. By then i didn't know how to set jobs to other dwarves, so ol' Stukos went berserk before even being able to claim a loom. Killed 4 dwarves and several animals before being killed by a miner.

The very next day I learned how to set jobs for dwarves, a skill which could have easily prevented the incident.

But well, it's Fun :D

I have to argue that single player doesn't filter anything out. I play Supreme Commander online, and the chat room is pretty polite there, SC has an insane learning curve.

The more complex a game, the better, always.

I must say I agree. I also frequent the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. -subforums of the Steampowered Users Forum (SPUF), and it is also quite civil. The reason may well be that it is one of the hardest FPS-games ever made, and you can't just play it like an average FPS game. You try, you die. In a way a lot like Dwarf Fortress, and I have seen people comparing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to DF there on multiple occasions.

STALKER and Dwarf Fortress have the same idea of fun: they both beat you in the head with it until you have brain damage.

I don't see how that changes anything about where they were drawn from.
No? You took Tolkien as an example for "dwarves are elves", which is clearly contradicting the Tolkienish lore.

In his lore, the tinkering elves would probably be the Noldor, called "the deep elves".

Tolkienish dwarves aren't elves.

Orcs are also elves.

Not only the Tolkienish orcs ;) Orcs, or to be more precise, the orsimer from The Elder Scrolls are also elves, even if they are "Corrupt elves".

On a sidenote, I cant seem to find any other place in the internet where a question for tips on building a set of ruins could transform into a debate on the relations of elves and dwarves.

Urist McBroker: "Hey, wait! How did you get here?"
Olith McTrader: "We... How did YOU get here?"
Urist McBroker: "I..."
Urist McMiner: "Wrong spot! WRONG SPOT! MAGMA HERE!"
Olith McTrader: "We'll be going now..."

I wouldn't recommend using weapon traps for this sort of thing; you can do far more interesting stuff with pressure plates/repeaters/bridges.

Actually I would use giant axe blades, most ayelid ruins have them. They also have large amounts of spike traps, and some of them have large, falling blades in the roof. And lets not forget the ceiling-crushing floorplates. No idea how one could build those.

While you're at it, why not make some of those towers from the planes of oblivion? :P

- DF players are somewhat dwarvish in themselves, they bend down under hardships and pull through, but stand together and enjoy helping each other, knowing each one has been in some calamity or other

It's just the dwarven communal thing. They even have some sort of a hive-mind, and once you start playing Dwarf Fortress and register onto these forums, you get connected to the hive-mind, without any way of disconnecting yourself from it.

Dig out the ground under the tree, then cause a cave-in of the ground it's on.

Build a platform over the tree, then collapse the platform.

Build a ballista pointed at the tree and then fire the ballista.

None of these yields a log, but they'll destroy the tree.
Silly elves, you forgot the most important one!

MAGMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Magma is NOT working in this case.
Look, the point of the magma isn't to detroy the trees here, it's just...

...

MAGMAAAAAAAAAAAA

What I'm trying to say here is that around here, we don't need anything as insignificant as "a reason" for magma.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but here's a very Dwarfy way of getting an "underground", refilling pool:

1. Drop a murky pool underground.
1.1 Channel out all the tiles around the pool
1.2 Dig away anything under it, but place a support to keep it up
 1.3 Link support to lever
 1.4 Assign everyone to burrows
 1.5 Pull lever
2. It's done :)

and one is free to do whatever you want.

Read: make charcoal to smelt that piece of tetrahedrite.

On an unrelated note, how do you get rid of the assorted corpses outside your fort? They are eating up fps like the cookie monster does on cookies...

Mass dump them into magma.

Well, it is acceptable if the dorf is carrying a cageful of dragons, bronze colossi or something of the like.
