DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Where can I find a Chasm?
« on: January 21, 2013, 10:31:40 am »
I've had the notification *chasm discovered* pop up once in one of the more recent versions of the game, but it turned out to be a really, really deep cavern (>70 z-lvl down, if I remember correctly).
I could not see the cavern floor at first though, so until I dug down way deeper it just appeared as a big black hole.

Thought it'd be nice to set up a statue garden, so that all my unemployed dwarves at least have something to spend their free time in. Added a waterfall that drains into the first cavern-layer out of boredom.

Now I have to shut it down to prevent it from flushing anymore dwarven children down the drain.
Sigh, suppose I'll add some grates...

So the titan is a blind rabbit..with a stinger...oh, also its FLYING. what the hell?!?

A warbler is a bird, as opposed to a fluffy wambler, which is a lethal throwing weapon.

Neither should have a stinger though. (Can't be sure considering the wambler is pretty deadly...)

So my first Adventurer in the new patch gets his first assignment:
"Kill them human vampire Blood O'Sucky 5 shacks to the east. The vile foe has slain six-thousand-three-hundred-and-twelve in his lust for blood."
Standard issue, just sign on the dotted line and off we go.

So the Vampire is easily identified, accused and then the fun starts (no, not quite !FUN!).
All the villagers gang up on the poor sucker, he puts up some good resistance and kills some of them in the fight, but is finally put to rest.
However, my first blow struck his arm, which caused him to loose grip of all his bone jewelery. It's over 100 pages of "Blood O'Sucky looses grip of the -human bone bracelet-". That guy carried over 2000 pieces of carved victims with him! On his left arm!

And then I hit his right arm ....

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Marksdwarves won't pick up bolts
« on: March 11, 2012, 01:05:32 pm »
I temporarily solved the issue by assigning a new Militia Commander and assigning each marksdwarf his own squad, but this only worked for a short while, now they are back to 'no activity' sitting in their rooms, twiddling their thumbs, fully equiped but w/o ammo. :/

You didn't mention it, but I'll assume that you assigned some sort of bolts to your marksdwarfs.
Make sure that you specified the right shooting direction at the archery targets.

Both done before and tried several variations but nothing's changed.

Quote
If you did that, try removing their ranger jobs. There are conflicts with axedwarfs/woodcutters because work items cannot be used for military duty. I don't remember if this applies to marksdwarfs as well.

Hm, will try, although reluctantly, as this is the only thing that they seem to be doing fine and it certainly has worked out fine before, just doesn't  anymore.

I noticed that marksdwarves who only have archery targets for training will often stand around with the Soldier job active but not doing anything. If you also give them an armor or weapon rack to train at, this idle time will be used for combat drills.

I have one assigned to them which they have used before.

DF Gameplay Questions / Marksdwarves won't pick up bolts
« on: March 11, 2012, 09:44:46 am »
I have some serious problem with my Marksdwarves - they just refuse to equip ammo.

- They do have quivers equipped
- There are plenty of unused bolts of all sorts
- I tried ammo stockpiles with/without bins
- Hunters currently have zero arrows assigned, but I tried all kinds of different numbers before
- All my marksdwarves have the 'Ranger' job assignment, being hunters when off duty
- They do pickup bolts when they are off duty, even shooting at enemies.
- They do not train during their training duty, although they have archery targets/barracks assigned.
- I tried stationing, guarding burrows and patrol routes, nothing works.

I'm playing v34.05 currently.

I'd be really thankful for some kind of solution or even workaround

Edit: Another really weird thing, perhaps unrelated - whenever I order my dwarves to move to a certain position and then send them back to civilian duty, they will sometimes come back to that position and hang around there for a while. They never carry any ammo when I positio them, but when they come back they sometimes carry some and just tur enemies into pincushions.

So the second siege rolls in and this time the goblins bring quite the lot, about 10 Trolls, some Giant Toads and whatnot, accompanied by ~30 goblins.
No way my 6 Marksdwarves are beating them, so the drawbridge is pulled up and the marksdwarves start putting bolts into trolls and goblins that come too close to the entrance. Then they run out of ammo. Since they won't restock while defending a burrow, I make them civilians again to give them a break, then after a while put them back on duty. Sadly, they don't pick up any new bolts :/
After trying to force them to pick up ammo for some time, I just resign.
"Screw it, the siege won't last forever, back to training duty" and so my dwarves retreat from their positions.

Sadly, they still won't pickup any bolts for training, but so what.

Until I notice a dwarf standing on the walls in full uniform, casually pumping bolt after bolt into the trolls below. He runs out of ammo, but decides that it's best to go down to the ammo-storage, pickup a new set of iron bolts and start all over again. And again. And again.
WHAT MAGIC IS THIS??

His description reads "no activity", and it seems he doesn't need any food or drink at all.
Well, if "no activity" means effortlessly killing 3 trolls and fending off the siege all alone, all of my military dwarves can gladly loiter around.

As long as there is at least one empty space between the well and the water surface, you should be fine (as long as your swimming nemesis doesn't fly, then you're just screwed).

An early and very small migrant wave in my new fort, a Weaponsmith , his wife a Wax Worker and his child (he has other childs but are adults and didn't arrived in the fort).

I looked at the guy thought

He is a former citizen of 3 places, but that's possible, nothing suspicious yet.
Then i noticed he had some kills, 43 kills !

Looking at his skills, he's skilled with hammer and adequate with dodging/shield and armor, he's a great weaponsmith and has some good levels in various social skills.

Should i suspect a vampire despite he came with a wife and a child, or is that just some very good pick in that migrant waves ?

Pretty sure he wasn't a vampire.
Notice how it states he is 92 years old and one of the first of his kind? 40ish kills for someone of his age is rather normal, if he's a Hammerdwarf or a a Ranger.
Also he didn't switch his civ all that often for his age, vampires will often pretend a very young age and have a ton of former civs listed.

edit: just noticed he is 92 years old and it's only year 59? That however is rather suspicious.

Just got my first ambush in my most recent fortress - a squad of 10ish elves.
My rookie squad of 6 marksdwarves made short work of them, mostly by mauling them to death with their wooden crossbows.
Now I have some competent hammerdwarfs, who also happen to be novice marksdwarves. :D

First siege follows shortly after that, this time 10ish goblins, and they carry REAL weapons, not that wooden crap, so I have raised the drawbridge to prepare a bit for them.

Now I have 2 options: try and forage in the caves (not a good idea: the small area I have already seen is infested with trolls and giant cave spiders) or I can try and down some elephants...with the one sworddwarf in my new fort military.

Or you could collect plants from the outside world (if you have at least some vegetation) and try some outside farming.

time to set "construct rock coffin" to repeat

Haha, you got it all wrong if you didn't have a workshop on repeat from the very start anyway :D

I made a pretty hostile world with a lot of wildlife and savagery and noticed during worldgen that civilizations lost a lot of citizens, leaving lots of abandoned villages around.
The houses seem to sometimes be inhabited by the local wildlife, i.e. badgers and the like.

Is it safe to sleep in these houses as it is in lairs/labyrinths? Not worried about the feral buck rabbit, just trying to avoid getting beaten up by boogie men...

and the dining room is a stone aquarium

Oh yeah, water is fun!
I recently did the same by placing the de-pressurizer on the wrong lvl. Unfortunately the killswitch was in the dining room, too. Yeah, seemed like a great idea at that point...

In my current game I built my water supply more carefully, featuring a ~10 z-lvl supply-pipe with access via floodgates and de-pressurizer on each lvl where water was needed. Also, emergency drainage into a cavern, if need be.
When I finally set the darn thing in motion it was working well, except when some dorfs noticed that those floodgates that had been blocking the way were finally gone and tried to get to the surface via the supply-pipe. Others were just admiring the beautiful waterfall I seemingly had built for their regalement.
Needless to say that 10 z-lvls of pressurized water ended those dreams pretty abruptly.
Oh well, at least they died in a state of ecstasy.
