DF Adventure Mode Discussion / You are melting!
« on: April 07, 2011, 03:40:42 pm »
Recently I headed of to kill a dragon with a few followers and, not surprisingly, it breathed fire which was a bit of a problem for the guys with no shields.

After the dragon was dead I kept getting the message "You are melting!" and this was apparently causing a lot of bleeding and melting fat damage. I looked at my equipment and I wasn't seeing any of it on fire like !!chicken leather tunic!! or anything, so I figured that maybe I just needed to cool down a bit or something.

So I sit there a while and the bleeding gets worse and I continue to "melt".

Finally I get the bright idea to remove and drop ALL of my equipment and after a few ticks the melting stopped, then the bleeding stopped but not before I was Faint, Pale, and otherwise almost dead from blood loss. I think my backpack or something burst into flame because there was a fire right around where I dropped everything.

So I go back into the dragon lair for some rest and recuperation and manage to heal up after a day or so.

After that I come out of the lair and my equipment is scattered all over the place for some reason, so I start going around picking up metal armor and putting it on and pretty soon I'm melting and bleeding again!

At this point I'm like "screw it" and I just grab some gold coins and leave ALL of my equipment behind since there seems to be no way to figure out which pieces are white hot, on fire, or whatever. Nothing is showing !!fire!! Luckily none of the equipment is particularly high quality or anything (base quality bronze and iron, mostly bronze).

I'm pretty sure I blocked the flames every time, but there were burning corpses everywhere and perhaps I was standing in fire the whole time or something. I didn't see my body on fire or anything except some burning corpses in tiles I walked through.

Any idea what happened here? I would have expected hot metal armor to cool after 24 hours. Perhaps there is some sort of temperature calculation bug?

It's also worth mentioning that you can Sneak and swim at the same time, training both. Recording a macro to move right 5, then move left 5, (for example) can also help speed up this process. Only thing I hate about swimming is the water freezing solid on you.

Sneaking is also easily trained by just sneaking everywhere you travel when time is not an issue. Only problem is that your idiot companions have a tendency to run off and get lost trying to brutally kill the local wildlife while you're doing this.

Leveling defense skills can also be sped up by recording "......." as a macro and playing it over and over. Of course you have to keep an eye on your damage but in practice this doesn't seem to be much of a problem.

I'm coming to the conclusion that training Knapping is too slow to be worthwhile, though throwing is good when done with a macro. The main benefit of knapping seems to be that it raises your spacial and kinesthetic sense and those may get raised enough by training up other easier things.

I'm not sure what the point to training butchering is but it seems like more of a pain than training knapping.

As for Observer, I'm betting the only way to really train this is to sleep out in the woods in a relatively safe location so you get ambushed constantly. Maybe when cities are introduced you can get practice walking around spotting Stalking thieves or something.....

Not sure where I got the idea that leggings should be wearable with greaves. Looking at the wiki again I see the shaped tag....

ok, nevermind!

Yes, because I've tried putting them on in different order and each piece can be worn individually. I've also removed all pants, thongs, loincloths, etc

Modding could quite possibly turn them into vermin.

According to the armor layering docs it seems that I should be able to wear chain leggings and greaves at the same time.

Only problem is that this doesn't seem to work.

What am I missing here? The dwarves seem to be able to do it in fortress mode. Does this just not work for humans?

The only rooms you should have to assign are rooms for "nobles".

BTW, nobles have usually claimed a lowly room from before they became nobles, so once they become nobles it may be worth unassigning whatever crappy room they had before. Even with new fancy rooms, I've found them sleeping in their old beds only to later find them bitching about the arduous inadequacy of their previous sleeping experience.

I'd say just deconstruct the bench and see what happens. Sometimes you get dwarves with minor injuries who will go get in a hospital bed and pretend to be dying when they can, in fact, move around perfectly fine. I've seen dwarves like this avoid death by thirst only because I pulled their bed out from under them.

I would use it. I'm actually playing DF on a pc right now simply due to the lack of dwarf therapist on os x. My mac might actually be faster too.

Hmm.... Not sure where I came up with the armor user info but I was sure I read somewhere that armor user was actually related to the probability of penetrating armor. Anyway, I'll fix that part

Ok, will add the elf speed thing.

I also updated the key reference so that it will all fit on most screens:

Thanks!!

Shook: The combat preferences section looks awesome. Thats exactly the sort of stuff I wanted to know.

BTW, some of the stuff is stuff that was already on the page (like the muscle mass thing) and I personally haven't verified it so it would be good for people to look over the doc for anything that doesn't sound right. I think there's also something else I marked Verify like empathy helping with recruiting.

Also, I think anyone (though you might need a wiki account) can update the rating to master if they want by hitting the Rate tab in the upper right. I just hate to do it myself because it's good to have a second opinion.

I just got done updating the adventurer mode docs:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Adventurer_mode

Let me know what you think. Also, we could use a detailed description of Combat preferences as I'm not sure exactly how they work.

It sounds like you just embarked on the edge of a biome, which is often good. Make sure to hit F1, F2, F3, etc when you're looking at embark zones because by default it will just show the info for one of them.
