DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: No companions?
« on: March 28, 2011, 12:27:20 am »
Try generating a basic parameter world with Medium history and a large number of civilizations. With about 100 years of history and a large number of civs, I don't find many abandoned forts. Up that to 500 years and it's hard to find any that aren't abandoned.

You can get companions by asking peasants to join you, but in the beginning it's very difficult and you have to ask a lot of people. Once you complete a quest and spread the news, recruiting commoners becomes much easier.

Also, how do you set up a macro.

Do whatever repetitive thing you want to do enough times to figure out what exact sequence of keys you keep repeating, then hit ctrl+r. Enter the sequence of commands and hit ctrl+r again. To replay the keystrokes you have recorded hit ctrl+p.

This seems to work pretty well for repeatedly grappling and releasing a creature, and for sharpening and throwing rocks.

Anyway, I fancied up and expanded the quick start article on the wiki a bit:

I didn't add the powerleveling techniques though because those might be a bit advanced for someone just starting to mess with adventure mode.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Animal Fortresses?
« on: March 27, 2011, 09:15:08 am »
I created a max size world with 1,000 years of history and every fortress that I've seen so far has been abandoned/destroyed. If you sit around and ask a random nearby villager about Surroundings then you'll sometimes get a historical date of when such and such destroyed a nearby fortress.

When you say wrestle with badgers, are you talking about actual wrestling (like A, Enter) or bare-handed attacks? I made a macro to continually "A, Enter" grapple with a small animal and got Fighter and Wrestling up to master or legendary which was good but I didn't get any defensive skill doing that.

I also made a macro to sharpen rocks and throw them and got Knapper, Thrower, and Archer up to legendary along with superhuman kinesthetic and very high spacial sense (though the hit rate and damage of a Legendary +4 thrower still seems rather lame.)

I Was playing from inside the winrar, and everytime I quit, my world was deleted.
If you do that then you're not really running it from inside the archive, you're really running it from a tmp directory in the user tmp folder.

So if this is what happened then it should be possible to get the region folder out of the tmp dir.

I can understand swimming but what good are observation and social awareness?

Fighting bogeymen one on one sounds pretty difficult unless maybe you have a really high agility so you can outrun them.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Hammers or Axes?

I like hammers because !!SCIENCE!! told me so. In a 10v10 of arena of steel armored dwarves, silver hammers beat steel battle axes. (I did the test myself to confirm the wiki)
I saw that on the wiki, but the thing is that your fort doesn't normally get attacked by hordes of steel-clad dwarves. Instead you get attacked by goblins wearing copper and leather, and a few megabeasts which usually die way too easily.

At least in fort mode I've seen gremlins appear in both caverns and on the surface.

After being a little frustrated with getting started in adventure mode, I decided to try to update the wiki page (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Adventure_mode_quick_start) with some information that I would have liked to know when I first trying to get started. (I also tried to organize it a little.)

Unfortunately, since I'm a little new to this adventure mode stuff, I'm a little unsure of the factual solidity of some information I added, especially regarding attribute allocation.

So this is a request to correct any errors I might have made, as well as a request to add any additional tips that noobs might find helpful.

So creating more titans and beasts doesn't actually mean they'll attack you in fortress mode?
It did not seem like it to me after several years of playing a fort in this world. Certainly you won't get all 10 dragons who are cohabitating in one lair come attack you at once.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The Trap Thread
« on: March 26, 2011, 01:35:50 am »
Most elaborate thing I've created so far is a drowning chamber outside the fortress, carved into a hill, with a kitten chained behind a door used as a lure. Only real problem with it is that the kitten eventually grows up which lowers the cuteness value of the trap.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: A Fortress Depending Entirely on Silver

I was about to say.... I've seriously fuked up a bronze colossus with bone bolts. I didn't kill it with them, but then again bolts tend to not kill things very well anyway. Anyway, after a few hundred bolts (at most) most of its body parts were red and it couldn't do much damage anymore. Some axedwarves had no trouble finishing it off.

Too bad you can't make crossbows out of silver (since they get used as blunt weapons in melee).

In an attempt to improve FPS a bit I've been generating worlds with 2 cavern layers. In the last game I had the upper cavern was devoid of water and plants. The lower cavern had plenty of water and plants. This doesn't always happen but has happened to me before.

It might be related to drainage or something. maybe try creating a world with max drainage everywhere and see what happens.... I have yet to figure out what some of the worldgen parameters affect (like you need low elevation for oceans, high elevation for mountains, and I'm assuming you need high temperature and low rain for deserts....)

Wish there were more info on the wiki. Maybe I'll do some experiments and add my findings....

Axes remove heads and limbs, and sometimes disconnect the upper body from the lower body. What more do I need to say.
