You're supposed to have something like one chain per 10 dwarves of population, otherwise the number of chains available will show up red on the justice screen. It pretty much takes a tantrum spiral to fill up all of the cells at that ratio in my experience though.

I usually make individual 3x3 cells with a chain in the middle, door, bed, table, and chair, and a food stockpile in the hopes that inmates will recover happiness faster. Table/chair also comes in handy if someone who needs an office ends up in jail (approving work orders from jail and such). Gold table and chair might not be a bad idea, even if the little bastards don't deserve them. Don't forget to use q on the chain to make it into a room used for (j)ustice.

If you want to get fancy, create separate food and drink stockpiles in each cell. I find that busy (or yelling and screaming) dwarves will in particular tend to let prisoners die of thirst. Expect random dwarves to randomly raid jail cells for their food though that isn't much of a problem.

I have read that the demonic fortress will show up in the architecture value of your fort, which (in addition to looking to see if you have an adamantine sword in z Stocks) is one way to tell immediately if you have a demonic fortress in your embark map. So it seems quite possible that attackers would show up faster because they're psychically valuing your fort by including the demonic fort.

How do you get your military to kill tamed creatures? They don't show up on the list of targets nor can they be selected.

Went out and handily slaughtered the humans running around in circles on the edge of the map. Then a roc appeared immediately afterward and I killed it in two seconds, causing an elite marksdwarf to name his copper crossbow.

Now, if I keep killing the humans who show up will they keep sending larger forces? They don't seem to want to attack the fort but I'm assuming they'll go after any caravans that come along....

They sure don't seem interested in killing the puppy or war giraffe that I tossed over the wall....

Hmm, I spoke too soon. Here come the humans to investigate their missing diplomat but they're just running around in circles at the edge of the map in the rain even though I've left the front door open for them.

Maybe the tactic is to bore my dwarves to death so they can take the fort.

I haven't tried very hard to chop down 100+ trees but I haven't seen any elf diplomats even after playing 10+ forts over a few weeks. Guess I don't come up with enough demand for wood to chop down enough trees.

I guess it could just be considered "cheating" since you might learn about new stuff going on that the dwarves wouldn't really know about, but I'm really not sure what kind of useful response your dwarves could have to any of that yet....

My highly-trained military is getting kind of bored in this non-evil biome. They'd really like to piss off some civilizations and start some fights but it isn't happening.

I did have them kill an annoying and useless human diplomat though. No response as of yet.

Anyway, I'm wondering what i can do to encourage attacks other than maybe manufacture as much wealth as possible and kill every diplomat and every member of every caravan that comes by. Not seeing many cave creatures for some reason....

Don't forget you can buy up every useless steel thing caravans have and then melt them down. I got a few steel bars melting down steel toy hammers and other random useless steel crap. Kind of expensive especially if the steel items are high quality but at least it means you get more steel and I could make a few nice steel items with the resulting metal.

I'm not sure you even need meat to start with. You get draught animals anyway so you can just slaughter those immediately.

Starting with less, more carefully selected stuff sounds like a great idea for terrifying biomes where three of your seven dwarves tend to get killed immediately before they can do anything such as haul everything to shelter.

The complexity of pathing up 3 dimensionally through twisty caverns reduces the FPS to almost 0 for a while, but get them into an area where the only path is a single hallway to the fort or something and the FPS goes back up to something thats still slow as hell but much better than 0.

And once they slaughter all of your dwarves FPS is great again. I didn't need that fort anyway.

This has happened to me. I got "lucky" and managed to dig all the way to the bottom with my first stairshaft without running into any of the caverns, which was good because I only wanted lava at the time. Once I started poking around on individual levels above the lava I quickly found the caverns.

So it's not that unlikely. I think the cavern algorithm may have changed in .19 so maybe it's more likely in .19....

I think the problem is, how would the game synchronize the state of the world if your adventurer were to, for example, visit your currently operating fortress while your fortress game is suspended? Even if you didn't visit your own fortress, what timeline would your adventurer be experiencing compared to your fort and how would any conflicts be resolved?

The only ways I can imagine this working are if you could play adventure mode and fort mode simultaneously, or if you could clone a world into an "alternate dimension" (timeline) starting at the last save point.

Actually I guess you probably could clone the world, but you'd need to duplicate the save folder, then resume the fort in the duplicate, then abandon your fort and start adventure mode in the duplicate....
