DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarf list screen
« on: January 05, 2012, 01:51:32 pm »
I'd REALLY like to see the u list be searchable. Actually, Dwarf Therapist already does basically what I want there, but having the add to squad list in the military be searchable (and the noble selection list) would make the game considerably more enjoyable for me.

DF Suggestions / Re: Disease and Other Natural Causes of Death

The main aspects of this idea (small chance of increased death from environmental diseases, cardiovascular failure) have already been suggested:

Yes, thank you, I was vaguely aware of that. Would you really rather I dredge up a thread dating back to the summer of 2009, before we even knew how syndromes currently work?

And why does the fact that occasionally people will start a thread about something that's come up a time or two in the past bother you so much anyway?

I don't see it so much as being offended as offering relevant background so we can see what the discussion has already covered.

kobolds don't steal children, that's goblins.

At the moment kobolds don't do anything but starve in year 4, but they used to steal items.

DF Suggestions / Re: LET IT RAIN!!! LET IT RAIN BLOOD
« on: January 05, 2012, 01:39:35 pm »
if it was raining magma then it would actually be a hailstorm of rocks. but seriously, wtf. I mean, it could be a curse, but think of the landscape.

Not the way magma currently works.  It'd be raining molten droplets.

DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarf Fortress is the best game I have ever played.

I agree with the lot of what you are saying... but open sourcing DF...    I think no one has the right to tell toady to do that he made the game and just because its popular doesn’t mean it's our game, he made DF and he has spent 5 years on the game so you have no right to tell toady to open source a game, I think open sourcing ruins games as any person can edit a master peace, it's like giving a marker to a 5 year old and telling him to make the Mona Lisa "better".

Suggesting ways to improve the game is what this part of the forums is for.  That includes suggestions such as opening the source. Nobody is trying to make Toady do anything, we are explaining why open sourcing the game would improve both the game and his experience as the developer.

Well, rat men are subterranean and thus don't experience the rain.  The horror of having your own blood pour down from the sky is lost on you when you when a human settler steps outside and says "What's with all this rat man blood?  This is weird.  Anyways, let's see what's at market!"

OH GOD!  If this is possible though, if the blood of a species can rain...  What... what if it can rain booze? ._.

This might require modding in a race with booze for blood.

I'm entirely less concerned with dwarven deaths and more concerned with common creatures and invaders.  If an ambush has 35 goblins, and you get 4 every year for 140 corpses if they're all killed, then by year 10 you could easily have 700+ corpses, even at conservative estimates.  While zombies aren't very impressive, 700 of them certainly is!  A way to dispose of an invader's corpse would help greatly for any fort founded on evil terrain.

Also, I'm curious about dwarven bodies.  I would assume a body in a coffin is safe, but if not...  Well, if you have a 5 year old, poorly run fort with let's say ~60 deaths, then you have 60 filled coffins.  If you suddenly reanimate, and these don't count as buried anymore, you suddenly have 60 ghosts and you need a lot of slabs in a hurry.  If you've embarked somewhere with low stone, like an aquifer, or a shallow desert, then that's going to be a BIG problem.

Also, of those 700 several would have decayed to the point of being skeletons, which are reasonably formidable.

...You made it rain blood?

the sentence at the top is from toady one, i just asked if he could make it rain Armok blood...like Armok gets a little paper cut and it rains blood for a week

magma is commonly referred to as either Armok's blood or the blood of the earth.....

I hope there is some modability to this.  I'd love to be able to make it rain acid or magma, idf that means we have to make a sentient race with acid or magma blood, well, that just makes it that much more fun.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Devlog: Random metals
« on: January 03, 2012, 04:08:12 pm »
I don't know, I don't think Toady will include [EDIBLE_RAW] or [EDIBLE_COOKED] among tags random metals could get. Especially not also whatever tags make cheese a rotting dairy product.
Shame, though. Would totally remind me of Discworld.
Mmm, treacle mines.

Can these be modded onto mineable ores/stones?

There are renewable metal sources?

Goblinite and caravans.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do i play this game
« on: January 03, 2012, 03:20:51 pm »
hmnn well, that's not a question any one can answer, every one plays a little differently with a different set of goals in mind which change depending how good or bad your embark is

you can learn to play the way I did
keep http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page open and tab over it to search for anything you need to learn how to do, for instance uh how do i get wood (alt tab) woodcutting. uhh ow do i dig (alt tab) dig, uh my draves are thirsty (alt tab) drinks, thirst

I actually to this day have to consult the wiki from time to time despite having many successful fortresses.  There is just that much to do.

over all the goal of the game is thus

survive as long as possible with all your dwarfs dieing a horrible, horrible, horrible inevitable death.  DF has no real obtainable end game, just survival.  and that's not as easy as it looks

it may help to get acquainted with the game and its workings, i suggest you read boatmurderd, syrup-leaf and headshoots  (though boutmurded is so old it may confuse you) feel free to message me on the forms with any questions or give me your skype and i will help you the best i can.

Boatmurdered is old and Syrupleaf and Headshoots are fairly heavily modded.  They are all entertaining stories, but I don't think they offer much as far as how to play the game.  Popping into the community games section of the forum and reading one of the relatively recent vanilla fort threads would be more help IMO.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What exactly IS a fluffy wambler?
« on: January 03, 2012, 02:45:50 pm »
I demand a mod that turns goblins in wamblers and trolls into big [BUILDING DESTROYER] wamblers.

Fluffy Wambler sieges, including Fluffy Wambler archers mounted on [TRAINABLE] Fluffy Wambler mounts, and Fluffy Wamblers wearing nothing but Fluffy Wambler-leather armour and wielding weapons made from the bones of their dead.

Glorious.

Fluffy Wamblers don't have bones.
