Read this as "caravan" fortress and was hoping someone got wagons working.  Was not disappointed.

Has anyone tried skeet shooting?  Set up a drawbridge to fling goblins past the line of sight of marksdwarves?

Could you create an embark larger than your final site, terraform, abandon then create a new embark there that's the smaller size and keep the terraforming results?

The point of nano-fortress is to poke at specific bits of another process.  That's a very virus-y behavior.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: "I love this game" moments
« on: February 19, 2014, 10:26:09 am »
My first was one of my first forts in a good biome.

Unicorns started grazing around the fort and I thought, "Oh, no big deals.  Some good unicorns will scare away anything scary that comes around."  Then one of my dwarves was gored to death by a frightened unicorn that had entered my fort and couldn't find the way out.

I thought, "Oh, no big deals.  I'll set up a cage trap and have a pet unicorn."  So I walled the unicorn into a room, built some cage traps and then opened the door.  And the unicorn happily pranced out and another dwarf was gored to death by a trap avoiding unicorn.

I thought, "Oh, no big deals.  I'll drown it."  So I walled it back in and channeled a hole in the top of the room where it was dancing in dwarf blood and directed the nearby stream into the river.  And the unicorn happily swam out through that hole and another dwarf was gored to death by a swimming unicorn.

I thought, "Oh, no big deals.  I'll just start a new fort."  And I did where never again was a dwarf gored to death by another unicorn.  The minotaur was a wholly different matter of course.

And I thought, "Oh, I love this game."

Obviously it's getting released tomorrow.  Why else would there be a thread about it unless it is?

He actually pressed it twice and got a barrel roll instead.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Recovering from a Flood: Tactics and Advice
« on: November 01, 2012, 08:02:13 am »
Well, first, since the floodwaters are a mixture of rainwater, sewage, oil and general debris you really want to be wearing something waterproof if you have to go out in the floodwater.  Waders at a minimum.

Then, since power is out, remember that food in the fridge will start to go off after about six to ten hours and food in the freezer after about 24 to 48 hours.  So eat up.  Be careful not to go near any downed power lines as they may be live or may be turned on unexpectedly.  I'd suggest shutting off all your breakers except bathroom and/or kitchen where you have GFCI outlets installed.

Finally, humans need fresh water.  About a gallon per person per day if you're using it to cook.  FEMA and the National Guard should be around to help direct you to where you can get fresh water if you are allowed back in your home.

Oh, wait, you meant dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Mobile dwarf fortress?

Your phone or any modern touchscreen tablet is probably an ARM core, not an x86 or x86-64 chip, and I don't think DF is compiled for ARM, so you'll still have problems.

However, everyone has an SSH app available.  (Mostly, I think...  I know there are plenty for Android and at least one for iOS.)

Sounds like the best option is either dfterm or df on linux + SSH if you're going to go the remote route.

The real issue I find when trying DF on a laptop is the lack of a numpad.

Well, the dwarf can still operate a sock shotgun with his own water pumping if real water is too dangerous for your pussy dwarves.

If water works then we could create an automatic water shotgun and stand the recruit on a grate, right?  Shotgun fires water at level Z+1, water falls on recruit on level Z, water falls through grate to level Z-1 to be recycled into the shotgun system?  Hell, do it to a pump operator whose pump output powers a waterwheel that works the shotgun system and you've got a real training gym.  If the dwarf is powering the shotgun then it'll automatically stop killing him if he goes unconscious.  That should improve survivability!  (Heresy, I know.)
