For an adult bee, nutrition is just a matter of calories. Honey or even straight sugar water will meet all their needs.

So... they glow now too? That would be unique.

Do you mean the bees from Red Hook that turned bright red from visiting vats of maraschino cherry syrup?

EDIT: Ah, I see you meant glowing hell bees and not cherry-juice bees...

Bees are unique and interesting animals.

DF Suggestions / Re: I proppose a new-ish fluid sistem.

Draco18s: "Lets just say for sake of argument that you have this fluid system and the first two liquids you add are:
Ammonia (great for disinfecting the wounded) and Vinegar (great for preserving vegetables)."

I know of one particular viscous liquid that can do both of those things.

Draco18s: "For shits and giggles you decide to make a pond of both and connect them via floodgates.
What happens when you mix the two?"

Honey mixed with water becomes hydromel. Once it ferments you have two ponds worth of mead.

I had this idea for mixing: link

DF Suggestions / Re: Allergies, Diseases, and also Vegan Dwarves

I'm not sure which would be more tragic, a dwarf who discovers he's allergic to beer, or a vegan dwarf who won't drink mead because he thinks that honey harvesting is morally reprehensible.

...

Well, the dwarves do kill their hives when they harvest from them, which is kind of a shame.*

Loud Whispers: "I'd rather have my dwarves be allergic to cheese then have all of their flesh swell up and explode."

I don't know of bees causing explosions, maybe your thinking of the children of Yig?

Couldn't a food allergy cause (hopefully not explosive) swelling too?

My old bee thread touched on sting allergies and the resistance a beekeeper develops by being stung... often.

DF Suggestions / Re: large stationary beer barrels.

Crioca: "As I understand it, it's fermented honey, watered down."

Actually, you have to water it down in order to ferment it; yeast needs the "honey" to be about 20% water at least.

I think mead is the main reason bees won Rainseeker's animal drive. If we're lucky, DF may get more than one variety.
*strawberry-honey mead*

BTW, there's a tradition where newlyweds drink mead everyday for a whole month (their honeymoon).

Owlbread: "I read this title as "large stationary bee"."

Yeah me too. I like the idea, it could let you see quantities of liquids (like mead or honey) without them having to be fully dynamic "liquids".

Giant barrels would also be a more practical way for a fortress to store its honey (instead of making lots of little jugs).

A giant ground dwelling miner bee (stingless and solitary, but it can fly and dig!).

Or, taking it to another level, the giant nomada bee that steals its lunch money (kleptoparasitic of miner bees).

First place went to Dwarf Fortress, followed by Little Nemo: The Dream Master and Bioshock.

Thanks for the bees!

RNG is good for me. I don't mind hauling either. It's up to you if you want a bearded-lady dwarf.

Come to think of it, beardless female dwarves would probably make better beekeepers.

I read that some people would give all the leftover brood comb (baby bees) from skep-harvesting to their chickens. I guess that's better than letting them rot; or eating them .
