DF Suggestions / Visualization – Graphics – Sprites

I’m a years long fan of Dwarf Fortress, there is only one “negative” thing that I can say about it.
Graphics…

I really hope my words and meanings come out the right way here. But my knowledge regarding game develop and requirements are… kind of nonexistent. Don’t get me wrong, Dwarf Fortress is a fantastic game but my insight, understanding simply fails me.
Why not implement some kind of “eye-candy” for the players?

I see other games inspired by dwarf fortress pop out now and then. Gnomoria is an example.
Is it impossible to add graphics similar to that game?
Is the game so complex that graphics would be too demanding for computer hardware?
Would it take far too long to add?

I only know two people (Myself included) who have been willing to play DF for a longer period of time. A third guy who gave it a shot, but abandoned it after a short while.
I really think adding some graphics would attract soooo many more players, and potentially contributors.
When I mention the game to friends, tell funny stories about fortresses and dwarven…behavior. They all say that it sounds interesting, but its always the same thing that steers them away. The visualization.

And I can understand why.
If you place two people inside an office and have them talk for a period of time, then take them out of the room and question which colors and what objects were inside the room. They would be able to tell you a lot.
Now if you asked them which sounds they heard while being inside the room. They most likely would have very little to say.
Seeing things is so important. It’s like “eye-candy” :)

Honestly, I had been experiencing headaches after playing DF for too many hours :D Everything is just so tiny and small, and the colors…

I really love the game though and I’m going to continue playing it :) But oh, how I wish there was some eye-candy.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Can you play DF in Stonesense?

I heard talk about that you can play DF in Stonesense. I mean completely without restrictions. Can anyone verify or dischard this?

I haven't played DF in a very long time, but I kept my eyes on the development, because once you play DF those pesky dwarves and your insane ideas for a fort will keep banging around in your head :P

I absolutely love this game, and I would love if it was possible to actually play it with 3D graphics.

War with elves (Dont like them anyway)
Untamed wilds
no wood except 3 tiles of scarse wood
Same 3 tiles contain clay and a little soil
Deep and shallow metal
Flux
Temperate = freezing in the winter

Visible from the start
Tetrahedrite = copper and 20 % silver
Gold
Marble
Obsedian (Not that which surround the volcano)
All of this in 21 tiles

This is gonna be fun :D

Well its been annoying me for some time now.... How do I know whats what when I look at the world map?? I think I got some of it...
Like what a volcano looks like also if the area is purple its sinister or haunted, if its blue its serene
But there are so many symbols/sign I dont know what mean.... :(
Im interested in one particular, lava/magma.... If its red my experience is its red sand... If there is some magma on the surface how will I recognize it?

By the way im using Ironhands tileset

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Danger rooms

Ive heard so much about theese danger rooms and decided to test it. But I cannot seem to get it working  :(

Ive built a room with about 12 floor tiles I think, build a weapon trap on each floor with 10 training spears each. Now this is as far as ive gotten.....

When I try and link it to a lever or pressure plate, there several different options to link it with. It must be upright spear/spike right? But when I choose this the only thing it finds is some two-handed adamantite sword deep down in some unexplored area.....

Is it a bug or have I done something wrong?

I was just wondering, are you not supposed to recieve an message and the game pauses when an forgotten beast/uninvited guest arrives?

I noticed a message in the log saying,
the forgotten beast is no longer enraged! followed by
cave swallow man is engulfed in flames! over and over again.

I quickly sealed off my fortress from the caverns, but still its annoying that I havent recieved a message and cannot find the FB in the creature log...

I am trying a very different playing style at the moment and experimenting alot... anyways I didnt finish my trade depot and the dwarven trader (caravan) went berserk which resulted in his own caravanguards killed him... haha
Lots of loot for me.. But now my friend tells me, because it was the first visit and they didnt get to finish the trade, there will be no more dwarven caravans coming...

Is there any truth in this?

If so this sucks, because I only have tin and nickel metals on my map so far, and a little galena (lead and silver)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Breaching an aquifer

Allright I have embarked on an area full of sand and clay, and an aquifer 4-5 lvls beneath.

I never tried playing on an map with an aquifer before, I read about breaching an aquifer with a "plug" I did this with 3 layers of earth. it collapsed and my miner broke several bones in the process :( But the aquifer remains.......

Whats the problem? The "plug" i 7x7 big and 3 lvls high. Is it not big enough or is it because its all sand and clay??

I know if you get a lot of value in your fortress, you attract attention - good and bad (Migrants/Goblins)
What do you guys do to try and avoid getting 100 dwarfs rather quickly? I would like to try and keep my fortress at a minimum regarding dwarfs.

I wanna use marksdwarves and healthcare properly. Anyone know anything about when we can expect it??

My bone carver wont make the Ivory/tooth crafts  :'( He states:  Cancels Make ivory/tooth crafts: Needs unrotten ivory/tooth body part.

I have butchered Naked mole dogs and have naked mole dog skulls in my stockpile.

Is it bugged or why wont he make the items?

Well here its the thing.
 A friend and I shared a region file, so that we could try and play the same map/region/world and see how we would do.

When he embarked, he had hematite revealed right from the start next to a volcano. When I embarked I had Cobaltite around the same spot... Further down I have Cinnabar. They both look like metal/ore but they are NOT metal/ore.

Does Cobaltite and Cinnabar goes as metal when the embark location is spawned??
He has hematite as shallow metal and I have cobaltite?? If so.... that sucks....

Does anyone know anything about this?

I am a bit confused about the metal overview when choosing an embark location in version 0.31.19.

I choose a spot with shallow metal, because I thought it meant that the metal would be close to the surface rather than deep down in the earth.

But the only metal I have found so far is Galena (and not a lot of it)

So my question(s) is: How do I find a location with iron veins in sedimentary layers? (Yes I want steel and loads of it :P )
Put in another way, how do I find Hematite, Magnetite and/or Limonite

-Does deep/shallow imply something else than the deepth it is found in?
-Does it got something to do with the color the text is written with?
-Or something else??

Hi  :)

First I would like to say this is a really great game and I having so much fun playing this, Thx Toady ;)

I was wondering if anyone have any new information about this problem?? I realise that there is already a topic regarding this, but the forum suggested i started this as a new topic instead of replying on the old one.

I only have the problem with my marksdwarves
I have learned this much so far.
1. All militia dwarves much have: waterskins, backpacks and if they are marksdwarfs they must also have quivers.
2. Marksdwarfs must have enough ammo.
3. Walkable path to Archery target (not build floor)

Most of the time they will fire at the practice targets but I cannot get them to engage into battle, not even once.... :( But when they are off duty, and running around hunting they will fire, attack and kill hostile as well as animals.
