DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarven trader killed
« on: August 17, 2011, 06:18:58 am »
I am trying a very different playing style at the moment and experimenting alot... anyways I didnt finish my trade depot and the dwarven trader (caravan) went berserk which resulted in his own caravanguards killed him... haha
Lots of loot for me.. But now my friend tells me, because it was the first visit and they didnt get to finish the trade, there will be no more dwarven caravans coming...

Is there any truth in this?

If so this sucks, because I only have tin and nickel metals on my map so far, and a little galena (lead and silver)

Hmm something interesting happening in my fort today :D

I was so busy testing out some things I havent tried before I forgot to focus on defense  ::)
Shortly after my best soldier (armed with the only steel weapon) Fell in the water doing training with a rookie and drowned....

There was a goblin ambush, they quickly killed my small militia force and turned on the civilians. I drafted a lot of civilians and turned them loose on the four goblins armed only with their teeth and ..... well nothing else. They starting biting and ripping limps of the goblins, one of the goblins jumped into the water and drowned.... pussy!

Now I am left with a lot of traumatised dwarfs, that are killing, fighting and destroying my fortress.

Cant wait to get home from work and see if I can turn it around :D

Gotta find an Arnold Schwarznegger dwarf and appoint him to sherif and deal out some justice :D

I have also tried something like that. Ambushers arrived at the map edge and the goblins started fighting each other, some were killed and then they remaining goblins left again.

Leaving my dwarfs very confused...

I had a lot of fun making a human fortress in 40d. Made a town with a wooden palisade surrounding it. I limited myself to only using wood for construction and building as realistically as possible. Each workshop was housed in a separate 'shop' building with a small cellar for storage an a living area upstairs. Everyone/family had a their own house. No apartments apart from a large barracks and communal room above the inn were allowed. I farmed aboveground crops only and bred cattle for meat. The only bit of underground construction I did apart from the cellars was a well so I had an unfrozen watersource in the winter. After a few years the pop had grown so large I had to make a second palisade to allow more housing. I also built a large stone castle as a megaproject by surface quarrying.
Im doing this right now, its great fun but building everything out of wood is very timeconsuming. Think next time its gonna be stone or perhaps channel the castle out.

Not sure how to do this but ive tried illustrate what ive been doing. Should I actually breach the aquifer?

Got it!! :) gotta breach the aquifer, so that the stone falls down in the water.
One sidenote its better to drop the plug from the top instead of the bottom ;)

I get all that but nothing happens when I drop the "plug"

How do I insert a picture of a quick illustration of what I do?

Already tried making another plug somewhere else, but not two at the same spot, as nothing happens to the first layer of the aquifer.

But I guess im in luck because a found a stone inclusion instead :D Got through the aquifer!! First found mud stone but dug 2 lvls deeper and found Gabbro so far :)

Still it bothers me with the plug, would like to find out how it works.

It's probably a multi-level aquifer. You'll need to set up a new breach point or use multiple levels of pumps.

My preferred breaching technique is to look for a stone inclusion of some sort that's not part of the aquifer.

Could you elaborate that? new breach point? Stone inclusion? You mean find a spot thats not aquifer? that could take a really long time :(

Allright I have embarked on an area full of sand and clay, and an aquifer 4-5 lvls beneath.

I never tried playing on an map with an aquifer before, I read about breaching an aquifer with a "plug" I did this with 3 layers of earth. it collapsed and my miner broke several bones in the process :( But the aquifer remains.......

Whats the problem? The "plug" i 7x7 big and 3 lvls high. Is it not big enough or is it because its all sand and clay??

Ive been thinking about building an aboveground too, just not sure of which kinda design to choose...

I think im going to build one on the map im on now, nothing interesting going on here... Havent seen any goblins or kobolds.. There was some hippoes and tigerfish when I started but they are gone now. Some elephants passing through from time to time... got a little over 70 dwarfs. Nice place to try it off :)

Gonna make a lot of iron pickaxes and turn a lot of people into miners, and make an open mine, and take it from there :)
