DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: DF:MP Drink, chat, and Play! event

lol, get in here!  It's almost time.  We're doing a challenge fort.  So each player gets one dwarf that is burrowed to a 25x25xall the way down spot.  You can trade with a central communal fort or each other.  Only militaries can leave each players burrow.  There's more rules to the challenge but it sounds great.

Are the liquids different from fortress and adventure modes?  Most dwarves seem to swim at the top of multi-z-level water but i've never tried pumping water in on top of them or alter the water levels while they swim.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / DF:MP Drink, chat, and Play! event
« on: July 01, 2011, 10:23:41 pm »
In about and hour we're having a DF:MP event.  So grab a drink (can be non-alcoholic), join the voice chat, and fire up some Dwarf Fortress.

I'll be playing the Dwarven Drinking game with a glass of instant Peach Tea and a jug of Kraken (rum).  So if you're in the mood for playing DF tonight and wouldn't mind some company, join up!  Everyone so far is very friendly and approachable.  I've learned more about DF by watching people play on the multiplayer server than all the hours on the magma wiki.  I also plan on stealing even more techniques and ideas from you all tonight : )

Sooo, what kind of game should the event be?  What kinds of ideas do you guys/gals have for a challenge fort?  It would have to be pretty hard but doable within 1-2 hours.  Suggestions?

My contribution.. i don't think it has been made yet.

Rentorian, i think you describe it very well.

So far i've only been involved in one succession style game via DF:MP and it was very much like that.  Eric Blank designated a mansion for his dwarf to live in that almost doubled the size of the fortress.  He then died to a mining accident during Girlinhat's play.  I was one of the first DangerRoom'd soldier's and did well until running into a titan.. who i killed but he broke my leg.  Infection!  Someone was eaten by a croc that crawled into the well and ate one of Eric's children.  It ended with the pulling of a sword.  There was talk of a reclaim but i don't think it happened.

It was a ton of fun.  I also enjoyed the intense arguments over designations.  For the most part, everyone was in agreement about what to do.  They usually chose the most brutal and efficient option.  Tonight is a "Drink, chat, play!" event but i don't think there are any plans on what exactly to do yet.

Back to the topic! TapeNoot, i think there would have to be a historian or secretary of sorts to make it a recorded story.  Perhaps a bookkeeper noble is amongst us?

So is there any active DFTerm server right now?  Remote dwarfing sounds fun.
Yeah, we've got two running now.  http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Dwarf_Fortress

The first one started on Sunday afternoon, 48 hrs later the fortress had been going non-stop all through the night and day.  It's about done now.. they pulled the adamant sword and well.. it was brutal.  The fort is 6-7 years old i think?

Here is the original thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=87683.0

EDIT:
Actually, if anyone else has a public dfterm server up, can you post the info?  We can add it to the steam group.

Are you using ubuntu? i think libicu42-dev won't show up in the software center.  You have to install it via System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager

Dear Carnes, any chance of getting the file as Girlinhat said ?
Can somebody post a quick walkthrough on what software you need and how to set it up? That'd be awesome.
Yeah, np.  Previously i was only giving the info to people who joined the group and asked in chat.  Not that i don't want people to have it.. i would like everyone to have it.. but not everyone will fit on this one fort.  So it was kind of a hurdle people had to cross to get access.  The first joiners were made admins and they can admin other people if they want.  But anyone can post events.

I'd still like to get people on steam for the voice and event system, but some people are having trouble because steam doesn't give you full access if you don't own any "paid for" games : /  So i'll pm the info to those people, no problem.  I think as long as we throttle new comers a bit, we won't have any problems.  I'm also going to setup a second (maybe third) server tonight, exactly like the first.  If anyone else wants to setup a server, that would be excellent too!

TL;DR - if you can't use steam, i'll pm it to you.  If you have steam, join the group chat and almost anyone can give you the info.

I think it's likely that more of these forts will popup soon too.  It's just too fun

I've joined the steam group, but since I have
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can't actually join the chat. Can I get in on this anyway?
Hmmm, i hope so.  Just a min while i research this.
EDIT:
Can you try adding some free games? You don't have to fully install them.. just start the install and stop the download.  It should look like you own the game then.  No idea how many you need?  That is actually really annoying.. i'm surprised you're required to "own" games before joining a group.  But i've left a list of free steam games in the Dwarven Drinking game thread.. page 3 or 4 i think.

I'll try adding you as a friend, once you accept i should be able to suck you into a group chat.

I guess I'll join this. How exactly do I join the "server", however?

EDIT: name on steam is Dwarfnator, for the record
Hey man, you're welcome to join.  I'd like to not post the server address here though.  Joining the group is a small hurdle but i think anyone who joins should get access.  We're mostly just playing/experimenting right now.  I'd say each fort can't do more than 4-5 people.. unless two of the people are very chatty or hands-off.  It's very entertaining so far.  Eric has a love for scary water plumbing systems.  Girlinhat seems focused on making an elf zoo.   HorridOwn4ge and Leviathan also seem really seasoned.  It's been great to see how other people play and build.

The fortress is accessible 24/7 by anybody.  So hopefully we don't get any griefers.  I'm going to do some init changes and do cron backups of seasonal saves... so we can restore the fortress if someone ruins it.  Also i'd like to create a download link to zipped up saves, incase someone wants to get their own personal copy of any public fortress.

Someone linked to it from the Dwarven Drinking Game thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=87464.30
dfterm is here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=50643.0

You don't need the dfterm to play though, that is only needed for the server.  The game runs on the server and everyone connects to it together.  We all "share" the controls over the game.  There is a chat window and other stuff to help work together.  We're on steamvoice too, voice is soo helpful (imo).

I'd post the link to the server we're using, but i think we need a "play" server for people to experiment on first.  We have no controls on the fortress right now, so anyone can grief it, or watch, or participate in the horror.   But people are welcome to hop into the group chat room.  We could probably do invites from there?  To at least watch and chat.

We've got dfterm up!  Running and tweaking the setup right now.   Overseers on this fortress so far are Girlinhat, Robogroudon, Eric Blank, and myself.  I embarked on a random spot with a river and "Play Now!".. just to test things out.  First year.. no booze and all the water has frozen.  Eric and Girlinhat deconstructed the Trade Depot and we've got enough food and booze to survive.

Lots of worthless migrants and.. oh damn! a noble just starved and the expedition leader is throwing a tantrum.

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Dwarf_Fortress

Anyways, it's really fun and exciting.  Though laggy.  Maybe this upcoming weekend we can have a nice "Drink, chat, play!" event.  After we've tweaked this install a bit.  Would anyone be interested in playing with us?  I think too many people would get crowded controls, but it should be possible to have multiple games going.

PS: Expedition leader went insane, decapitated two people with a pickaxe and is now safely locked into a room that Girlinhat built above ground.

I just installed libicu42 and libicu42-dev.  Did you install the dev components?

Idk, I'm suspecting shenanigans.  Noone seems to respond to anything.
Hey man, i see you in the group.  We played last night.  I drank and Eric Blank was doing some !!SCIENCE!!.  Posted another event for next friday, same thing as before.  But feel free to post your own event if you want.

If you haven't used steam before, it can seem big/overkill for just doing groups and events.  But there are a bunch of great free games on there too:  http://store.steampowered.com/genre/Free%20to%20Play/ and http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=851573

Going to play with DFterm a bit and see if it's something we could do as an event, lots of people seem interested.    I think Eric would like to eventually get a succession fort going too.  But this thread started as a drinking game, so i'd like to keep that as a weekly recurring event.

Almost time!  Grab a drink (doesn't have to be booze) and hop into the chat room for introductions.  No stress or pressure, you can even just lurk if you want.  http://steamcommunity.com/groups/Dwarf_Fortress

I'm having a Rum & Coke but probably won't drink much tonight.  (hah, i'm weak, i know!)  Also, all the people who have already joined are promoted to officers.  You guys can change anything including the picture and group info.. it's this board's group, not mine.  Hope to see you guys/gals there!

I really wish more people would use DFterm. I've always wanted to use it but don't know many people who play DF much.
You might be able to schedule an event to get some people playing?
