Fortunately, it fled immediately afterwards. Coalwashed is safe...for now.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Exporting Attributes to Excel
« on: April 16, 2012, 02:31:17 pm »
I'm doing some work on attribute gains, changes, and decays, and need a quick way to export lots of attribute values out of DF and into something like Excel or SPSS, or even Word or Notepad.

I'm aware that Dwarf Therapist gives access to attribute values, but I have found no way of copy-pasting them, and manually transcribing them destroyed my frail arm. I also seem to recall Runesmith also having that functionality, but that's defunct now.

Does anyone know of a way to do this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Towns and Forest Retreats
« on: April 07, 2012, 09:37:53 pm »
I've got an embark with the following neighbors:

Town
Forest Retreat

I'm not seeing these show up as neighbors, even if I try to embark right on top of a town or forest retreat. My current civilization isn't at war with humans or elves. What am I going to see if I embark here?

DF Modding / Exporting Attribute Values Into Excel
« on: March 30, 2012, 12:04:12 pm »
How might one go about doing this? I'm interested in looking at relative rates of change in attribute value over time for different labors, and would like a quick way to pull attribute values for each dwarf in the fort and stick them in Excel for subsequent analysis.

I know you can do this in Dwarf Therapist, but you have to enter the attribute values manually, and it's generally a pain.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Powerleveling A Diagnostician
« on: March 29, 2012, 07:09:58 pm »
Stumbled across an interesting bug today.

A dwarven child was attacked by coyotes. He suffered some injuries, but survived, and was carried to the hospital.

My CMD diagnosed the patient and went to get a crutch. However, I hadn't built crutches. So the CMD completed the diagnosis and cancelled the crutch-retrieving job.

I quickly built some crutches to get him moving about again, but instead of grabbing them my CMD performed a second diagnosis. Intrigued, I waited for him to finish the diagnosis and then forbid the crutch I had just made. Sure enough, the CMD cancelled the job. I reclaimed the crutch, and the CMD proceeded to perform a third diagnosis.

In theory, with micromanaging of crutch/splint/thread production, this process could be continued ad infinitum in order to obtain a legendary diagnostician from a single injured dwarf, provided the dwarf didn't heal completely or die while the CMD did his thing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Viewing Soul Attributes?
« on: March 20, 2012, 06:52:50 pm »
I'm planning on doing some research into attribute gain in dwarves, but I'd like to be able to see soul attributes as numbers, like willpower or kinesthetic sense.

I know Runesmith used to do this - are there any other utilities that can produce this output?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Cabochon Stockpile?

I can't seem to find how to set up a stockpile to accept cabochons. Tried searching the forums and the wiki. Anyone have some pointers?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stabbed In Foot - What Just Happened?
« on: September 15, 2011, 05:11:00 pm »
The scene: Goblin invasion. They tested out my new set of entrance traps, which worked far beyond my expectations.

While my dwarves are picking up goblin bits so that the traps can fire again, one of my laborers comes across a goblin thief and gets stabbed in the foot before it runs away. She falls over, but has reasonably high toughness and endurance so she doesn't pass out. However, her health screen does ready "Ability to stand lost" and when I examine her she has active requests for a diagnosis and crutches.

Due to some bug, nobody comes and recovers her to take her to the hospital herself. She lies in a stream for the better part of a month with a cut open foot while I try to figure out how to get someone to take her to the hospital.

However, while I'm setting up a cave-in near her to re-queue her diagnosis request, she gets up and moves back into the fort. I'm excited, but she doesn't go to the hospital. She goes to bed. When I checked her z-health screen she no longer had an open diagnosis request, nor crutch request, and it looks like she's walking again even though she suffered motor nerve damage?

I was under the impression that motor nerve damage was permanent. How is she moving around?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Attribute Training
« on: September 13, 2011, 09:12:36 pm »
Hello DF forumgoers,

I've got a question about attribute training. In my current fort, I have set up a large Dwarven gym and made pump operation mandatory for all of my dwarves, with the idea that as they become Herculean in strength and stamina I'll pluck them out of the gym and into the military.

I've been keeping a basic spreadsheet to track values, since I don't believe Therapist does it, and I'm noticing that dwarves running the pumps gain endurance attribute points MUCH faster than strength or toughness.

Does anyone know if jobs reward different amounts of attribute points, or is it one flat rate of gain for all attributes associated with the labor?

DF Gameplay Questions / Equipment Issues
« on: September 06, 2011, 10:05:51 am »
Hello DF Community. Here's the problem I'm having.

I have my military set up in a training state, where their "uniform" is just a wooden training weapon and a wooden shield. However, I cannot get them to equip their training weapons like they're supposed to.

* The uniform is set up as "over clothing".
* I created a new alert for the training state. They train 4 months out of the year, with two month breaks in between. The squad is 5 dwarves, and a minimum of 3 are required for training.
* The uniform status in the alert is set to "Inactive - Uniformed".
* When my soldiers are off-duty, they work as miners.

* When I go to the equip panel, there's check marks next to the weapons and shields.
* When I go to e -> P and check position uniforms, there's a shield and spear listed for each dwarf.
* However, when I go v -> and check their inventories, there's no weapon or shield listed.

My question is, what's making them not equip their training weapons? I think I read somewhere that being a miner creates a uniform conflict like hunter and woodcutter does, but I couldn't find documentation of that anywhere on the wiki.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I Have a Dragon
« on: March 27, 2011, 02:17:40 pm »
He's in a cage trap. My dwarves are admiring him.

My question is: as I have no dungeon master, now what do I do with it?

DF Gameplay Questions / Miners Getting Burned
« on: March 13, 2011, 09:24:02 pm »
First legendary miner - maybe I'm unlucky. Let's keep going.

But now my second legendary miner, lost to setting up magma piping.

I don't recall this being an issue before 31.21 - does lava move faster now? And if so, what's the best way to go about setting up magma sites for use in kilns/forges? Using more agile dwarves?

DF Gameplay Questions / Render Fat Unavailable as Job
« on: March 08, 2011, 12:41:54 am »
Like the title says. Just butchered all my extra animals in the fort, and my butcher's shop is overflowing with fat, but the "Render Fat" job is unavailable at the kitchen (listed in red, gives an error message if I try to select it).

What's going on here?

DF Gameplay Questions / A Square, ASCII Texture Pack
« on: March 06, 2011, 09:59:10 pm »
Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

But as the title says - does there exist a 'texture' pack that leaves the actual game textures unchanged, but will make everything square instead of rectangular?

Or, can someone tell me how I can go about doing this?

DF Gameplay Questions / What Items are Stored Where?
« on: February 24, 2011, 09:44:30 pm »
I'm leveling a clothier by making some coats and robes, and I can't seem to get them to be stored in any stockpile.

The current settings I'm trying to use are:

- All armor
- All cloth

But nobody will haul the coats downstairs to the stockpile. It's currently got some armor and thread in it, though not enough to fill the entire stockpile.

I've had similar issues with some other stockpiles, but I can't figure this one out. Anyone know how to get it to work?
