DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tips for a good military?
« on: April 03, 2013, 12:02:55 pm »
I have had very good success using squads of two to very rapidly train up skills. Soldiers in a 2-man squad set to do nothing but train do almost nothing other than spar day and night. Once they're up around hero-level, condense them into a squad of 5-10 for easy deployment, depending on how many entrances you need to cover and how many soldiers you have.

As far as weapon makeup goes I've been playing around with that a little bit lately. The current setup I have is that the militia commander and his captains get axes, the two seat uses a short sword, and any others use hammers. I have entire separate squads of marksdwarves, who use crossbows exclusively. However, from what I've been seeing in combat, the hammers aren't lethal enough for how many there are. I'm going to shift this later on so that the commander and his captains use hammers, the two seat uses an axe, and everyone else gets swords. That should allow the leaders to jump in first and incapacitate things, while the rest of the squads follows behind and starts lopping off arms and legs.

I figured as much. I would rather have gotten the werebeast than a peasant though.

Fortunately, it fled immediately afterwards. Coalwashed is safe...for now.

I've been building into the sides of mountains with my last few forts, going for kind of a World of Warcraft / Skyrim type Dwarf style.

Current top level, the hospital, with trade depot one level above that for easy caravan access.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Most of the current surface bedrooms, with tombs behind.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

One level below that, a barracks, the meeting hall, and bulk storage.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Current bottom level, more barracks, and the beginnings of some militia bedrooms.

And in Stonesense

Eastern watchtower, and all four main barracks.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The beginnings of the kitchens and developed farming industry to the left, most of the area at the top will likely be bedrooms.

Utilities and 3rd Party Applications / Re: DFHack 0.34.11 r3

I'm having trouble getting the tweak subcommands to work, things like military-training and stable-temp. I'm entering "tweak stable-temp" for example, and it's just telling me how I'm supposed to use the tweak command. What am I doing wrong?

I'm running dfhack 0.34.11 r3 and df 34.11.

EDIT: Fixed this. Turns out that I had installed r3 incorrectly. Reinstalled and it works now.

Wood. Wood bolts, wood traps.

Is it weaker than metal? Yes. Will wooden traps and wooden bolts still kill things? Also yes.

On the non-military side, comically oversized rooms with smoothed floors are more than enough to keep nobles happy, and anything else you need can be made out of stone, clay, or glass, instead of metal.

Problems arise when you have no wood, though.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Why does everyone use the default graphics?
« on: September 12, 2012, 03:44:00 pm »
I use the default graphics, because Dwarf Fortress isn't about graphics. It's about mechanics.

Graphic sets improve the look of the game, yes, but it's still a 2d pixelated game. A graphics pack might allow me to more easily discern a door, or a piece of armor, or a creature. But they also have their limitations. No graphics pack can represent actual randomly generated engravings on a wall, or encrusted gems on a sword, or physical differences of dwarves (beards, sideburns, weight, etc.)

Since I can't get graphics as accurate as I want, I don't bother making the graphics more accurate. The default tileset is sufficient, and my imagination (and Stonesense) fills in the rest.

I did switch the default tileset to 16x16 though, it bothered me that square buildings weren't square in the 'true' default setting. But that isn't a realism thing, it's a planning thing.

I had some titan parts laying around for my last strange mood, apparently.

Got a glacier titan made of black diamond that shot webs.

That was 6 pages of log. He did manage to choke a swordsdwarf to death in that time, unfortunately.

Can you do anything with the diamond he leaves when he dies? It doesn't show up as available to cut in a gemcutter's workshop. I wanted to encrust the soldier's memorial slab with it.

It was suggested that I post this here, from the Fortress Mode forums.

I'm doing some work on attribute gains, changes, and decays, and need a quick way to export lots of attribute values out of DF and into something like Excel or SPSS, or even Word or Notepad.

I'm aware that Dwarf Therapist gives access to attribute values, but I have found no way of copy-pasting them, and manually transcribing them destroyed my frail arm. I also seem to recall Runesmith also having that functionality, but that's defunct now.

Does anyone know of a way to do this?
dwarfexport is what you want. Then, just write a script to process the XML to a csv and import it into Excel.

Where does dwarfexport place the XML file it generates? I'm not able to find it.

So if there's a tower within range as well, I should expect massive amounts of zombie fun?

I've got an embark with the following neighbors:

Town
Forest Retreat

I'm not seeing these show up as neighbors, even if I try to embark right on top of a town or forest retreat. My current civilization isn't at war with humans or elves. What am I going to see if I embark here?
