Einsteinian Roulette / Re: TINKER: Saint's Death Warrant
« on: July 13, 2014, 05:47:47 am »
Well, whoever wrote that to you clearly had no idea what they were talking about because they either didn't read or didn't understand how the Gauss Slingshot works.

((I can say that I didn't write that - I would've posted it here, not sent it to PW.

Still, whoever did is correct is correct about how insanely dangerous that thing would probably be, with the ease with which it can damage and destroy itself (here's something the comment didn't mention - damage to the coils (which is basically inevitable with the way it's intended to be used) could potentially result in a magnetic IED). And the accuracy comment too. As Syv said - you'd probably be better off getting a small(-ish) vector automanipulator and a barrel that's functionally similar a smoothbore cannon barrel.))

Anton, please tell me you did not just do what I think you did. Did you detonate one of those drones, without even saying that you were doing so?

((Sean, those both look rather... unergonomic. Especially the plain laser rifle - that battery port does not look like it would make a good grip. [/nitpick]))

Make one, but only just one remote-capable Will uncompensator. Also, make enough tracker/electrification implants (like the ones put in all HMRC prisoners/ARM operatives) to be able to put one in all the captured civilian workers+Xanclone and Grate, while we're making implants.

Anton, how are things on the front of us getting rid of that abomination?

Saint, I'm making some implants, mostly for the captured civilians - when they're done and you're ready, I'd like you and Charles to go, him convincing - just the canned speech he's made should be fine, and you implanting. Nobody works here without an implant, am I clear? And yes, that means the new Grate will get one as well. Also, there's another implant being made, alongside the usual tracker and electric implant, especially for Xan, whom we have a clone of in stasis. It should render him... mostly harmless. I have the keys to the room his chamber is in, and his chamber, so I'll open it when you're ready to put it in. The second key will be left in your possession at this time - both must be used to open it.

I can't wait until the inevitable speech roll on Mission 15. Unless someone comes up with the bullshit you guys should probably shovel manually.

The force of attraction between two objects is directly proportional to the mass of the objects and indirectly proportional to the square of the distance between the objects.

f = (Gm1m2)/d2

or somesuch. I'm not sure if G is supposed to be in there.
I'm wondering more on the how part. :< As in, how does mass even do such a thing?
That's the something something I ended up putting up there.

Take this with a planetful of salt, for I am not a quantum physicist. Nor do I want to be one. The closest I want to touch it is at the level of parts involved that deal directly with atomics.

Mass is energy. Quite literally, for the elementary particles, which can have their mass given in electronvolts(/c2) (1 ev = 1.6e-19 joule). It also makes it fairly easy to simplify such things as antimatter annihilation - a proton (and thus, an antiproton) has a mass of 0.511 MeV/c2, so the mutual annihilation of a proton and an antiproton produces 1.022 MeV.

Welp.  Since I've never actually made an int or cha check yet, can I switch my five in cha to int, and continue tinkering like I was?

I believe that I've asked similar as to my character's Transhuman profession (I have not once used Exo, nor Speech or Charisma). I think the answer was not without invasive brain surgery, or something to that effect.

Actually, I think similar stuff has been asked by one or two others as well, with similar response.

((You're making what amount to one-shot capacitors for it. This has been done before.))

You people make me glad I plan on nipping issues with Xan's abilities (while he's on Hephaestus, at least) in the bud (thankfully, with player consent). Now, once he's on the Sword, I couldn't care less. Though I might, instead of offering a removal chit, just give control of the uncompensator to the Generals, if it can be remotely activated/deactivated.

354
((The man wants to make laser 'bullets'.

I see no reason to stop this from happening other than practicality - just sticking a generator on it would be easier for all involved.

And PW, I think you have failed to impress upon him the size of the thing. Sean - that crater we had to clean up already existed for the most part - the bomb was punted into a ship pit. I would start at full-kiloton yields (keeping in mind that measuring yields of neutron bombs in tons of TNT is kinda... missing the point).))

Can it also be made that the uncompensator I'm designing can be remotely activated/deactived (not triggered, but toggling active state)?

355
((If Hep people want this in the OOC or tinker thread, just say so.))

((Please. Can we try and keep this thread at least as in-character as the mission threads?

Also, missing updates sucks, at least for in-character interaction.))

Well, we already do know what Will rolls look like in the brain - we have a Will decompensator line, after all. All I really want to do is tweak detection settings to match the MkIV accuracy with MkI action, on a range that's broad enough to catch all (and only - not wiping out free will entirely, just making them autofail rolls. Maybe increase the power of the disruption so that it knocks out rather than autofailing attempted rolls) roll-level signals.

Einsteinian Roulette is in danger of being stricken from the Nominee's list if it does not receive the requisite number of votes by the end of the month. If you feel this thread is worthy of induction into the Hall of Legends, vote now!

You're kidding, right? I think that this is probably the only game to have been granted its own subforum.

+1, anyway.

Life Advice / Re: The Generic Computer Advice Thread

I'm not just looking at clock rate - I know at least enough not to do that. But it does look like the point of comparison within the chip families - the other points don't change as much in-family, at least not for the ones I'm looking at.

TDP is no issue - I ran into power problems when I got my graphics card to take over from an integrated chip - the sound of it whining and then dying wasn't fun. I (rather, my dad, who technically owns this computer, but not the current PSU (I hope he's saved the old one somewhere) or graphics card) ended up getting (my money, his choice of PSU) a 600W unit. Even with the most power-hungry chip that I'm looking at, I'd still be using less than half of my supply.

Games aren't the only thing - this computer will also need to be able to handle the work I'm going to have to do for my engineering degree(s) (not sure what all it will entail, but it's probably going to be a bit more than a word processor). And besides - games really don't care about the CPU, in my experience - with an old AMD Athalon dual-core running at 3GHz, the computer I'm using now can run any game I care at maximum, because I have a decent graphics card (which I do intend to transfer to the new computer if I do not upgrade).

And while I'm familiar with AMD's ability to heat a room (I am making sure to invest in a good cooling system anyway), I'm trying to get the most powerful equipment I can while it still being of halfway decent quality and somewhat cheap - the total budget for this computer is >$1500, and to be honest, the FX chips are cheaper than the i5 chips, when the motherboard cost is taken into account - totalling $350 for the end-all-be-all FX I could get (and I can go about $70 cheaper), and $370 for a moderate-power (comparatively) i5.

Quick, someone shop Putin and the Pillsbury Doughboy

That is creepy. It's like you carved Putin's face into the Doughboy's, whose head is at that time made of meringue.
