DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: August 19, 2011, 10:38:27 pm »
I built my first above ground fort-city, Appletown. (There are no apples in Appletown.) I am sure it's not much to DF veterans, but I am immensely proud of it. So proud, I took a picture in Stonesense and labeled it so I can admire it on my desktop:

The main road is made from gold and electrum, painstakingly traded over the years. The main material used to build was clay. I embarked on an aquifer so I wouldn't be tempted to go deeper than two levels (and hardly used that much). It turns out that if you don't dig, you don't get very many artifacts or seiges. For the first ten years of the fort, I think I had maybe 3 artifacts made. I don't know if at this point I'm going to work on spoiling my dwarves silly or starting a new fort.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Waterfall questions!

I could swear that waterfalls I've made that went straight down and were surrounded by one tile of rock ended up muddy and growing fungus, I assume from the mist. I could be wrong!

The water will splash the tiles surrounding the waterfall and generate mist on every level. You need grates or fortifications (to separate your dwarves from the waterfall) or they will be washed away. In my experience, one grate is not enough, because the overflow will flood the area. How are you planning on feeding that waterfall? Keep in mind that water will fall straight down when it comes to an open space, so to create that cross shape you'd have to be feeding it from six separate streams from directly above. I don't know if one brook would be enough or not.

Yep, that's exactly what it was. Now it's showing up!

DF Gameplay Questions / Offering to Caravan
« on: August 18, 2011, 11:20:26 pm »
Is there a reason that my offering to the Caravan doesn't show up in the noble's screen where it lists the requirements to become the capital? I offered about $30,000 worth of food prepared at my fortress and the dwarven trader said he'd make sure his leader gets it, but the requirements list still reads $0 has been offered. Does the food not count; do I have to trade crafts instead? Or am I doing something else wrong? The queen is alive, I checked, and the food was made entirely at my fort.

Edit: I tried offering some steel short swords and shields made at my fort, but the the "current" offering still stands at 0 on the requirements screen.

Actually, as long as the tile in question is part of the "font," and not an image for a creature, you should be able to alter the colors in the DF file since DF doesn't really know that that tile isn't just another ASCII image.

Go into data -> init -> colors.txt and alter the RGB values, and see if that alters your tiles for you.

I gave that a try, and while it did alter the color, it didn't change the brightness. That's useful to know, all the same.

Ah, so maybe if I lighten the grey color of the tile? Okay. I didn't know if the tint was controlled by the tileset or the game itself.

DF General Discussion / Is there a way to change the color of graphics?

Particularly, I'd like to brighten the appearance of the constructed floor tiles. I'm using Phoebus' graphics, if that matters.

DF General Discussion / Re: Gender Poll
« on: August 14, 2011, 12:07:13 am »
I'd also like to know: why the interest in how many women play? Why not ask about other demographics: race and ethnicity, income, etc? What is it about gender that makes this question significant?

Because everyone knows there are no women on the internet  ::)

I do have the suspicion that this is what it comes down to: women that play games don't exist, and if they do, it's because they are biological aberrations. Which is a crummy way to view someone and, worse, view oneself.

I'd also like to know: why the interest in how many women play? Why not ask about other demographics: race and ethnicity, income, etc? What is it about gender that makes this question significant? I don't see this question asked of men in female-dominated online circles. There are no women on the yaoi oekaki boards asking where the men are; no ladies on the relationship boards at a certain popular health site polling for gender in hopes of coming across lurking lads. No one found it odd in old fanfiction circles I used to haunt that most of the writers were women. But in video games, it's a big deal.

Is it, in fact, related to relationships? Maybe not an immediate one, but the hope of one? As in: if one women exists that likes this, perhaps others will?

DF Gameplay Questions / I've been in free clinics like this...
« on: August 12, 2011, 05:37:51 pm »

Eight dwarves appear to be piled on one bed in my hospital while the doctor operates. Yeah, it's a small hospital, but there are clearly 3 free beds next to them. Has this happened to anyone else?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: SO MUCH FUN!@!

Welcome to DF! It's good to see new players.

I had a lot of FUN today when a goblin seige snuck into my fort by getting on one of the walls. The result was an epic battle five stories off the ground and a lot of bodies splattered in the courtyard below. The remains of my army broken and bleeding, the day was saved by a retired soldier with paralyzed legs that finished off the invading trolls by beating them to death with his crutch.

I love this game.

If you change the baby cap to

BABY_CHILD_CAP:10:1000

in the d_init file, dwarfs will continue to give birth, but at a more reasonable rate.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Protecting Caravans
« on: August 04, 2011, 08:19:41 pm »
How do you do it? I only embark on flat areas now because it becomes too difficult to protect incoming caravans otherwise. Sometimes, on a more mountainous map, merchants will spawn in some high, weird place and get crushed by an ambush, and then I'll have to spend time and risk lives disposing of their useless crap. Sending military after them means dwarves running crazy all over different z levels, which makes them a pain to track.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dorms or rooms?
« on: August 04, 2011, 07:33:35 pm »
My current bedrooms are bed + door. The doors are currently exteriors but if I ever get to furnishing them further I'll make them interior. Each room has two spaces of floor to make room for containers in the future.

What's the diff between interior and exterior doors?
