I've been playing for months, have read the wiki and this board regularly and just now found out about SoundSense because of this thread. I am very excited.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Shallow world?
« on: July 25, 2011, 07:07:08 pm »
It's probably more a site thing.  I don't think the world generator would let you gen something without mountains. Or with stubby ones for that matter.

You could try messing around with elevation parameters in advanced settings.

Oh, okay. I assumed there was a corresponding parameter because I built four different fortress in that world, and they were all like that.

The sites were 0 elevation and near rivers, but still, I haven't encountered such shallow earth the 40 something other times I've played.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Shallow world?

I genned a world that had only 20ish z-levels between the surface and the magma sea, and it still had several caverns. It made pumping magma so much easier. How can I do it again?

I don't think it was anything out of the ordinary. She did have high strength.

Some kind of dinosaur with deadly dust found a hole in my defenses, and before I knew it, it was causing havoc in the middle of my unarmed, completely defenseless fortress.  Out of a token gesture more than any kind of real hope, I assembled 30 naked civilians and sent them after it and sat back to watch the carnage.
I’m not sure what happened after that. There were great plumes of smoke (the dust?) coming from it, and, not surprisingly, the only thing doing any damage at all was a dog that managed to scratch the beast on the tail. Then, out of nowhere, the Brewer goes Beowulf on it and punches the thing’s leg off. Clear off! The beast collapses and lands in its own frozen extract. Then it was dead.  The 30 dwarves were blistered down to their internal organs and died slowly and agonizingly, but the fortress was saved.
The thing is, I can’t figure out how it died. I didn’t see any deathblow in the combat log. It collapsed, then it died. So I’m wondering, is it possible it came into contact with its own blood, dust, or extract, or whatever, and died?

Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed it. Reading about Toady's hardcore programming life brought to mind this quote from one of Octavia Butler's books:

"And a sweet and powerful
Positive obsession
Blunts pain,
Diverts rage,
And engages each of us
In the greatest,
The most intense
Of our chosen struggles"

People often look down on those with obsessions, but I wonder if it doesn't take a (positive) obsession to achieve anything truly great.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Love. Hate. Questions

With some minor changes you could make that more inclusive, and by doing so, wouldn’t have to worry about coming across as sexist. For example:

Mini-rant:
Have you ever been in a relationship with someone who is a bit ugly and you don't like their personality, not really, but  they’re willing to do things you like and they do everything you want? Except they’re stubborn and difficult and crazy too and it is really hard to get them to understand what you want? Geez, DF is like that.
[/quote]

Personally, I’m a control freak that loves being surprised. If  I can control things, I will, but something is only fun when the unexpected happens, so the crazier DF gets, the more successful I view it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How to get more evil biomes?

I apologize if the answer to this would be revealed with a little more searching on my part, but my time on the internet is limited these days, so a direct answer or a link to more info would be much appreciated.

So, yeah. How do I get more evil biomes during world gen?

DF Gameplay Questions / Food Selection

Will dwarves seek out the stockpiled food and alcohol that they prefer, or do they select their meals and drinks at random?

Poorly guarded caravans that arrive at my fortress and promptly get themselves killed because I'm attending to more important things than making sure their boxes of pig-tail fiber cloth and rat weed make it to the trade depot. Forget building a military or mining the deeps - it seems all I do these days is shuffle elf corpses between the refuse heap and the quantum garbage pile.

My last few forts have begun with mad dashes underground to escape the terrible badgers and badgermen (always one with the other) so I feel your pain.

I love the idea, but when I saw it in action I was underwhelmed. If you ever get more than walls and floors in, though, this could be amazing.

I've had this problem twice before, and each time it was a problem with burrows. None of the burrows were activated and no individuals were assigned to them, yet the problem went away after deleting the burrows. So you might try that.

Edit: Or, you could make sure the furnaces are assigned to the same burrow as the ore and supplies. That works just as well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Local area for site finder?

When you move the cursor over a green X in the region view, it will automatically put your local embark area in the "best" spot in that region. I have no idea how it defines "best" but it usually seems to be pretty good to me.

Oh, I see. Awesomeness.
