DF Gameplay Questions / Local area for site finder?
« on: April 15, 2011, 06:48:42 pm »
I'm using the site finder for the first time ever. I can see areas marked as matches, or partial matches, on the region and world map views, but not the local map view. Does this mean that it's a total guess which squares are matches when I must select a 2x2 square for embark in the local view? If so, that's not very useful.

Sorry elves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: In caves...
« on: April 15, 2011, 05:13:14 pm »
You are talking caverns not caves. Caves are surface holes that are home to semi-megabeasts like giants or ogres. Caverns are what you breach when you dig down several z-levels. By the way, some cavern mobs can fly over simple walls so be prepared to either build a roof or wall all the way to the ceiling.

In that case, I didn't know there were caves in this game.  :o

Also note that flying cave beasties loooove to come up through that up/down staircase shaft you dug into the top of the cavern then abandoned because it didn't reach all the way to the floor. Make sure you wall that off before a giant bat finds his way into your sleeping quarters and kills all the children 3 seasons after you forgot about the dig. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything...

Yes, I've learned this lesson the hard way. On the other hand, I was excited to find that I could essentially dig straight to the bottom with little danger as long as I plugged everything up.

im doing that right now, i dug down to a magma pool and im building my fortress around, fun part is that theres magma crabs, the magma pool is right next to the edge of the map and i have only 1 soldier, also im on a evil biome so im getting harpied and ogres sometimes

That's a cool idea. I'm going to try that.

Do cave beasties spawn at the edge of caves, or can they spawn anywhere?

I want to know because I plan to dig straight into a cave at embark and want to know if it is possible to wall off a safe area inside. That would be thwarted if crundles and other things could spawn inside, though.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Non-lethal Waterfalls

I am not meaning to be rude, by referring you to the Wiki. But it does have a snazzy mist generator design. Same effect as a waterfall, but its easier to create, and place. Plus you can get experience with power sources, pumps, gears, and axles. That article helped loads

Not at all, thanks. I didn't know that mist generators were different than waterfalls.

How do I make a waterfall that dwarves can see, but won't sweep them away or drown them?

Amazing. This might make me feel better about embarking on hilly/mountainous maps. Will be back for more effusive praise after I've actually used it and have something worthwhile to say.

This is why you should make the holes below the impassable tiles and not anywhere else. Helps also to keep the aforementioned magma crabs out, I guess.

Yeah, that makes sense. Geez. A month of playing this game and there are still things I'm learning.

It makes me all warm and fuzzy to be punched by a female troll.

I know this is totally out of context, but I giggled when I read this line.

A lot.

No, that stands completely on its own!

Glad someone else noticed it, because one of the first things I noticed was a lack of women. This is almost always a matter of internalized sexism on the author's part. Don't misunderstand me, the author is probably a swell guy that doesn't even think about it, and sexism is nothing out of the ordinary and doesn't make someone a bad person. But it always strikes me as creepy how many creators envision a world completely devoid of women, aside from bit roles as love interests or eye candy. As a woman, and one that spends her day surrounded by as many other women as possible (women's studies minor and all) I just can't buy into any world where people like me aren't...well, people. That's not the kind of fantasy that's fun for me.

You can make arguments like patriarchy, and they're all in the kitchen, and so on, but if you actually study history you'll learn that women have always existed right alongside men, doing fantastic and awesome things. The idea that women have never done anything but housework circa 1950's is, itself, just a patriarchal myth and a result of interpreting history through our modern, patriarchal perspective. If anything, there's a lot of evidence that primitive hunter-gatherer societies were more egalitarian. Even without that, though, you've got to consider that this is fantasy, and something like rigid gender roles are easily changed in a world where kobolds and elves reside. It comes back to a matter of importance to the author.

Or fault could be like me- I have almost no female characters in my story because I can't write them for shit.

I used to feel the same way and never wrote female characters for that reason, and that despite being a woman myself. Having grown up in American society where women don't get many cool roles in movies, it took a number of revelations before I made the simple connection that women were actually a lot like men and vice versa. For example, any of the characters in this comic could be made female without changing anything. But because we're used to thinking of women as mysterious and alien or shoved into these love interest roles, our imaginations fail when we try to think of them as people with the same basic motivations and personalities as men. One of the things I love about dwarf fortress is that it actually has a realistic, 50/50 ratio of men to women, even for enemies. It makes me all warm and fuzzy to be punched by a female troll.

Aside from that, what I read was nice. The line art is on the crude side and could stand to be cleaned up, but the author has a unique style that's charming. I approve of the dwarf fortressy-ness of it. Unfortunately, yeah, I don't go out of my way to read anything without women, though, 'cuz of the deficit of life experience it speaks of on the author's behalf and in general it makes me feel like crap.

I had a magma smelter and forge positioned above the magma sea. A militia guy goes to pick up a shiny new adamantine helm hot off the anvil, apparently engages a nearby magma crab in combat and ends up charging it and tumbling THROUGH the forge and into the lava below.

WTH? So the hole on the outer edge of the forge counts as passable, despite being built over? Would an aqueduct with fortifications below the forge have stopped this from happening?

As I said, artifacts are your best bet (for the positives)
Really? Dwarves notice artifacts in halls? I thought they were only useful for improving the quality of dining rooms and bedrooms.

Thanks again, you guys are the best :)

Oh, those are excellent suggestions. Thanks clockwork, CapnUrist.

Time to pick up the pieces... I didn't even make a jail? Geez, no wonder.

It's true, I didn't do most of the nice things in this fort I usually do - no personal bedrooms, master furniture, waterfalls, decadent food, etc. So this is probably my fault. I had no idea being merely "content" was that dangerous.

Flameheld's down to 30 dwarves (from 110), the tantruming seems to have ended and, miraculously, I appear to have most of my military intact and rather happy. So I may be able to pull this out of the trash if a huge seige doesn't show up, which it will, because this is dwarf fortress. Dunno how happy I can make people with my legendary dwarves dead, though.

You have a knack for writing. Good story - I hope you archive it somewhere.
