DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do layers "repeat"?
« on: May 27, 2011, 04:51:25 pm »
That really depends on where you are, but your going to see igneous or metamorphic stones down below the first few layers.

We cant tell you exactly what your going to see, since dwarf fortress has random environments.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Axe vs Hammer vs?
« on: May 27, 2011, 04:40:35 pm »
It also depends on enemies. Killing with both weapons takes more time than with swords or spears, but hammers take most, in my experience. Against unarmored or lightly armored targets at least, I don't encounter heavily armored enemies. Axes chop enemies to pieces and allow them to bleed from the start of fight. Hammers do not. Last fight with Forgotten Beast took 24 screens of text, with three maxed hammerdwarves. Axedwarves would take less, and would produce many limbs, some of them would rot to bones. So I prefer axes. Steel ones even though I have adamantine - I hate carny color and low weight of that "metal" and prefer it for walls and such. And for picks for civilians. But I give hammers to marksdwarves as a secondary weapon, and have some squads of hammerdwarves for fun. If weapons in the game were realistic then hammers and picks should be weapon of choice against heavy armor and mounted enemies. Well, maybe that's how it is, but I have no much luck for both of these types.
You use adamantine for walls? Into the magma with this one!

Try removing them from the military, though i think they will still runaway to get a drink when their thirst gets critical. I had a bunch of legendary wrestlers because i didnt bring anything to decapitate a one of the many monsters found in evil biomes.

Only potential problem i can see would be water flowing onto two adjacent ramps causing FPS fun. Other then that potential problem i don't see any reason why not.

Thats why i like to embark somewhere with hills, if that's not possible then i usually end up tearing up my entrance and replacing it with stone from the bowels of my city.

Yeah. If I'm digging out a close-to-the-surface-completely-stone fort and I suddenly hit a nice, big chunk of DIRT.

I rage. I rage hard.

Typically i can stand a vein of somthing else in my dining hall. It adds character but dirt will not be tolerated in my fortress!

There's currently a bug where old dumping zones continue to be used in some cases, i suspect this has something to do with this. My dwarves dumped all of my fresh goblinite into magma when i was attempting to get them to move it indoors >.<

Bugger. I wanted to just outright win. Break them so hard they crumbled into dust.
This is Dwarf Fortress.  There is no winning, just ever increasing numbers of losing conditions.

That entirely depends upon the criteria you set for "winning".

I'll tell you what my criteria for winning isn't. Fun.
Your playing dwarf fortress wrong then.

Sadly what you see is what you get. Theres a limited number of goblins per siege and therefore a limited number of prisoners to torture.

No because Urist is exposed to open water. The floor grate is earlier in the plumbing. What you can see in water and what you can catch are two totally different things.

Build it like this (side view

~~~
    T
    T          GTT
    TTTTTTTT
Where T is the tunnel, G is a floor grate and ~~~ is your happy little stream.
Creatures are completely oblivious to objects above them and cant destroy that grate.
Its the martial trance, ive seen dwarfs take on incredible odds with that. Meanwhile my legendary wrestling dwarfs get picked apart by beak dogs.
