That is some sexy curves right there.

Can you do things like animate the wavelength of the curves to make them crawl along each other?

That's why I'm Agnostic instead of Athiest.

If there is 'something' out there, it possibly just likes to screw with us for laughs.

I have had 3 events:

1) Exiting high school, I saw a squirrel, at that moment, I KNEW there was money in the bushes on a route I don't normally take. I kept trying to shake off the feeling that there was something, because it just wasn't logical; I got a very strong feeling about one particular shrub, and even though it was prickly, searched it thoughly, and I found three 20 dollar bills. In Monopoly money. (I still have them.)

2) I had gotten a new job, and so bought a used jeep, and moved into an apartment 1 block away from work; one day while walking to work, I startled a rabbit which darted into the bushes; At that moment, I got an incredibly strong urge to go back and drive to work instead. I succesfully fought it off, every though it filled me with a sense of anxiety all day; when I returned home, my jeep was missing (The dealer had pre-emptively reprosessed it because they couldn't verify my employment/address; since when I bought it, I was still at my out work/apt; the new jobs etc. was all discussed with the dealer before then... they were idiots, what can I say?)

3) Later on, the same jeep (I bought out the loan w/parents money), I was crusing a county road. The CD player in that jeep was broken, I had tried it many times, even sticking a knife into it to see if something was jammed in it. There was a deer in the road, I stopped, it walked off; at that moment, I KNEW the CD player worked, so I pulled one out of my carry-case and slipped it in, and it worked.

Computer programming is like giving instructions to an evil genie.

On the plus side: it does exactly what you tell it to do.
On the down side: It does exactly what you tell it to do.

DF General Discussion / Re: What % finished do you reckon DF is?

I put it at -200% before 1.0 is released; at least 2 total rewrites will occur.

Personally, I preferred the 1D version.

my death, I'd like to know how im gonna die.

That's just making it too easy for the evil djinn.

I thought of a better one.

Apperently, there is a work of art named Kryptos in the courtyard of the CIA's public office, the artwork has an engraved message with a horribly complex code. and the decoded message is stored in the safe of head of the CIA; last I heard is hasn't been solved (probably due to the small sample size)

I'd like to see the creation of the encoding used for the message; so that I not only know the message, but how to decode it; in order to awe and amaze some of the best codebreakers in the world.

DF General Discussion / Re: What turns you off about DF?
« on: January 13, 2012, 06:39:07 pm »
I could see DF being 'finished' if Toady decided to work on a new game/version entirely.
I would not count is as finished, but abandoned. In fact, there are two possible scenarios:
  • Abandoment - as described above.
  • Ceasement - when Toady will be found dead by keyboard, hopefully from old age.
I claim DF will be never officialy finished.

Perhaps Toadys children will one day hit 1.0...

Well, except for the fact that he's a work-at-home computer programmer with a cat.

so yeah, never happen.

DF Suggestions / Re: Large Address Aware flag

I'll try that CFF tool later, I did realize one other concern, the LAA flag might break DFHack and releated tools, like Therapist.

The JFK assassination, from a perspective that I can clearly see who really did it.

(Insert evil djinn making me the true assassin)

2 Soafs. New ones. Slightly used. From the village the other side of the valley to me, for 1/10th thier price new from sofaland or suchlike. Now to find out how to get them down (riding them?) and then back up 2 massive hills (we do hills properly in Wales)... and how to dispose of my old and broken ones.

Use a pulley system with your old sofas as counterweights. New sofa goes up, old sofa goes down.

One time I mentioned on IRC that I paid someone $50 to kill my sisters cat.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The worst was when I told a woman on IRC that "... except I want children", and she took it to mean I was a pedophile, instead of being interested in reproduction...

That was awkward until I figured out the misunderstanding.

I would raise my hand, but my internet renews tomorrow. It has been a long week without it, but I can start doing that sort of a thing tomorrow...

Might put up a copy of my current code if anybody wants to brows.

I always love seeing other peoples' code.  It's enlightening to see something someone did gracefully and realize how much of an idiot I am for not thinking of that.

I can't wait until I get to do a technical interview of someone. Because I'll have them try and figure out what this bit of code I wrote does:

while ((r = ((x ^ n) & ~(c ^= ((n <<= 1) >> 2)))) < x);

Coins were a problem, since DF does not allow merging stacks of items after creation; so instead of a dwarf carrying 100 copper coins, you would end up with something like: (IIRC)

12 copper coins
2 copper coins with a coating of water
1 copper coin
6 copper coins with a coating of elf blood
3 copper coins
1 copper coin with a coating of water
19 copper coins with a coating of dwarf blood
37 copper coins
7 copper coins
...

Which caused massive lag.

DF Suggestions / Large Address Aware flag
« on: January 12, 2012, 06:49:41 pm »
Recently Everquest (Ancient spagetti code from 1999) added the Large Address Aware flag to their executable. So did Skyrim (Modern code from 2011).

Upside: Not crashing to desktop just 'cause you crossed the 2 gig limit. Obviously a good thing, but it only gives a bit more room, not like going 64 bit. 16x16 embarks?

Downside: Possible corruption if the code isn't really 'Aware'. You might end up having random data overwriting your dwarfs. bugs that are hard to diagnose. But if the code is portable 'tween Windows and Linux, it's probably fine.

If Everquest hadn't done it I wouldn't suggest it for DF, but EQ is horrible twisted code, that has had high turnover in developers, such that the current devs don't even know how some core game mechanics work (like archery)... and it appears to work for them, so DF should be no problem.

It is just a bandaid, but bandaids are useful.
