DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: November 11, 2011, 05:48:56 am »
Scrolling through my cage inventory (above the drop hole to the barracks) I saw goblin, goblin, troll, troll, cow, horse, Giant Cave Spider....

Wasn't planning on catching one, it just happened somehow, guess I gotta review silk factories...

Also, according to the 'u'nits list, I'm up to 25 FB's wandering the mostly closed off caverns (which makes me wonder where the gap was that let the GCS through...)

Drank deeply from a bottle of whiskey, then stepped on a land mine.

I just realized that my niece recently made Rainbow Cupcakes (white cake batter, food coloring, layers etc.)

I am now concerned.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Any tips for terrifying?

I find that telling them that the shadows they see moving in the corners of their vision know that you can see them, and so they are going to get you.

Works pretty well to terrify a 8-10 year old.

The white light faded, and His face appeared.

"Hello, Doctor Freeman, it pleases me to... see... you again."

He moved closer.

"My employers have a... very special task for you to perform. There are those who would interfere with... our work... our... worlds."

A view of a green verdant landscape appeared, one that might have been on Earth, before they came, before it ended, before Black Mesa.

"Of coarse outside... influence on our affairs cannot be tolerated... and so it is... time they were shown the... costs of their meddling... throw a spanner into the works... or perhaps a crowbar."

As Gordan awoke He trailed off, "Or perhaps you can make some new friends..."

Umineko knows exactly what Folk themes are absolutely awsome!

I WANT to link Coral Q's theme but honestly it has two versions... and without knowing the lyrics there is just no point.

You mean this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9ZPpfP_rpU

Check the first name.

I can only imagine Emo Wristscratch writing sad poetry and getting laughed at by the other jock trolls. Full of troll angst!

bah Wrist != Wax, Wristscratch (down the river, not across the street) would have been VERY Emo.

I trade with the elves instead of atom-smashing, all the 50â≡·ⁿ²δµΩδ∞φε∩±≥≤⌠⌡÷≈°∙·√ⁿ²■ ▄ (dang, can't find the money symbol...)

anyway, all the 50 or less db items go out, 1000+ db barrels of Gnomeblight, etc come in.

A lesson I learned as a pedestrian.  You vs a car,  The car is more than 10 times your weight and able to move at a much higher rate of speed than you, and requires more room to stop than you.

Pedestrians legally have the right of way most of the time, but realistically pedestrians NEVER have the right of way.  All the legality in the world just means your immediate family gets a free win in a really expensive lawsuit while you are a smear in the road with a small paper memorial to you built on the side of the road until next time the city mows the grass.   Sad but it's the truth.

WTB Photoshop'd (or actual) tombstone reading "He had the Right of Way."

Life Advice / Re: Dealing with extreme procrastination
« on: October 01, 2011, 10:15:45 pm »
Same situation here, I have 4 hours to fill out some online forms to get my unemployment berefits... still havn't done them all week.

I know the cause though, I've stopped taking my ADHD medications, because they were making me to stay awake until 6am, then sleep until 2pm... not really conducive to working a regular job. (I work as a contract software tester, I wasn't fired, but my contract hit it's limit, and just waiting for the non-compete to expire...)

With the meds I was the most focused and attentive person at work (software testing), when I was there. Without the meds, I can be there, but i'll get easily distracted.

I probably just need to get the right dosage, but at this point I keep putting off and forgetting to make the doctors appointments.

I'd have to say the worst part of having ADHD was all the years it went undiagnosed, all the problems I had with school, etc. as a teenager really hurt my self-esteem (99.9th percentile verbal, 99.7th math on the standard tests... but failed out of high school because I couldn't complete assignments... I had/have psiorisis/arthritis as well, but it was never a strong part of my self-image, since I most of the people I know, I mainly know online.)

DF Modding / Adding a reaction to a live fortress
« on: September 13, 2011, 12:29:19 pm »
So, I modded in a new smelter reaction in the raws of a save file, but it's not appearing in my world, do I have to regen the world so that Dwarves know of it?

any way to allow it in my existing fort? I know I'm modifing the right set of files, since I modded Rope Reed to make 'yarn' (world imported from .18 to .25, getting moods for Yarn... but no shearable animals exist...)

Please note, all of this is purely anecdotal. Your mileage may vary, consult your doctor before beginning an aspirin regimen, may contain nuts or nut products. This product is not intended to treat or diagnose any condition. Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball.

... can a thrown cockroach kill a man.

That's easy, just toss a live cockroach into a someones mouth while they are yawning, so they start choking on it.

I Guarentee someone will die if you do this.

(Also, why you should cover your mouth when you yawn)

DF Suggestions / Re: Skill Consolidation
« on: September 09, 2011, 02:11:12 pm »
If I may refer to my post from a while back about an alternate skill system:

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=85495.msg2304886#msg2304886

Some of the ideas, including overlapping skills, are included in this proposed implementation.

That reminds me of my "Kitten of the Month Club" business idea.

Each month a new playful cute kitten arrives via express shipment, and you simply seal the old one in the enclosed plastic bag, and send it back via regular ground transport.
