a single tooth maybe?

perhaps inciting sober brawls would work.

Or Dwarven Ice Hockey.

...

Which sounds AWESOME.

Toady: plz implement dwarven sports.

I lost a mason from my first migrant waves to Badger Boars. Without a free hand to build a coffin, I let him rot on the surface.
Shortly after he began to haunt my fort, I opened up a coffin for his skeleton. My dwarves proceeded to bury his severed left foot and put him to rest, satisfied with his burial, as the rest of his body continued to decay by the brook.

TL;DR: A Dwarf's soul is contained in his left foot.

Science! question... can you prevent ghosts by severing a body part from each dwarf, and pre-burying it? (or kept in a refuse stockpile until he dies, then burying it?)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Howto: Artifact Non-Metal Anvil?
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:57:47 pm »
The problem is: An anvil can only be made out of metal, yet no metalworking can be done without an anvil. However we all have anvils and metalworking and somehow this process had to be started by a first, nonmetal anvil. Therefore the only way that Dwarfdom got its first anvil before the existence of anvils was by a moody Dwarf who liked anvils. This means that producing anvils from strange moods is possible.

Q.E.D.

Sadly, the first one also liked Slade.

Problem: I have an uncontrolled magma flow, I may have used non-magmasafe mechanisms along with the bauxite floodgates, as they held when closed, but once the magma was released, they don't appear to be able to close.

Solution: channeled over the magma channel, and put a clear glass hatch over it, then built a wall around it, and am linking a lever to the hatch; the area over the hatch will be designated a Pond, and when sufficently full, the level will be pulled, hopefully creating an obsidian plug.

I got 16 FB's wandering around my caverns... I've basically written them off, what with a half dozen extracts sprayed around...

The baby may be the perfect shield, attackers might attack the invulnerable baby instead of the mother.

How much does what you are taking cost per hit?

What visualizer is that?

THATS what fortress defense needs! A racoonman civilization! I'm already gonna get visited by the badgermen.. eventually..

Sounds like they would just be a copy-paste-rename from Kobolds, but possibly even cuter.

Wamblermen?

They can, but with a spike pit 3 z-levels deep (or more), destroying the hatch they are standing on only results in their death.

Except they don't wait to stand on the hatch to destroy it.  They destroy it from two tiles away, ruining all your hard work, and locking them out and you in.

Which brings me to perhaps the simplest trap enhancement of all time: the artifact decoy!

1) Wait until a dwarf builds an artifact piece of furniture, like a bed, door, weapon rack, throne, whatever.  Don't worry, it'll happen eventually.

2) Build it a few tiles from the front entrance of your fort.  Doesn't really matter where, just so long as it'll be the closest destroyable building from every surface map edge.

3) Next siege, watch trolls fall away from the goblin pack and huddle uselessly around the artifact, trying to destroy it!  You may now hatchdrop goblins at your leisure.

4) Think about what you want to do with the next big pack of tightly clumped trolls.  Marksdwarf practice?  Catapult practice?  Drowning trap?  I would avoid cave-in traps.

I'm currently surrounding an artifact bauxite throne with 2 rows of steel and spoiler upright spears, hooked to a lever, which will be set on repeat when appropriate.

I have a pesky Rutile (i.e. Titanium) FB with a cave-in dust attack, hasn't killed any dwarves yet (the cage full of assorted monkeys/apes I unleashed into the caverns to delay such attacks shall not be forgotten... or missed, the war grizzlys hopefully will repopulate over time.)) I plan to lure him into the spear field, and see how that goes.

that is a lot of potential weapons, I may rollback after he's done, but I guess I need to see what he's making.

edit: now he grabbed 2 sets of diamonds, 2 forgotten beast leathers, and is going for something else still...

Recently been playing Tropico 3, very much reminded me of DF, what with the designating structures, and waiting for little guys with individual names/personalities, etc. to build them.

Plus, being able to order the execution of citizens.
