How do I make crossbows actually work?

Well, more details about the problem might help...

For starters, make sure the hunters/whatever have not only the crossbow, but ammo and a quiver as well. (And make sure they have unforbidden ammo - by default ammo they shoot and that doesn't break is forbidden, so you have to re-claim it before someone can use it again.)

Seconding Darkweave... it seems fairly easy for lye to get mixed with water somehow, and then it's just unusable. Try finding your lye (through the stocks screen probably would be easiest), hunt down each container, and check to see what it has in it. If it has anything other than the container and lye, dump it, forbid it, whatever, and make more lye.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Moving Rotten Stuff to stockpiles

Once stuff starts rotting (almost typoed that as "rutting," quite a different thing o_O), I send it to the garbage dump, for what it's worth. Probably easiest, if your dwarves are ignoring it otherwise.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do I dwarf syrup?
« on: April 23, 2011, 07:09:28 pm »
Hrm, the way I understood it, dwarves need one solid item to start the cooking, but then for any additional ingredients, they'll grab what's closest, so if you have a stockpile that just takes liquid-type ingredients closer, then a stockpile for the more solid food ingredients, they'll use the syrup etc. for more complicated cooking.

I could be wrong though!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why won't my cook build a kitchen?
« on: April 23, 2011, 02:17:55 pm »
Anything in the way that's blocking it and causing suspension? (Doubt it since you'd probably notice that after twice, but just in case.)

Is there enough clear space for it, ie: the two or three or however many open spaces in a kitchen aren't blocked by something else? I don't know if that affects the building of it or not, though.

Silver is a pretty heavy metal, so it's good for blunt weapons, like hammers and maces.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Simply cannot get hospital supplied.
« on: April 20, 2011, 02:50:31 pm »
A problem I had (which I imagine most people wouldn't, but I mention just in case) is that I also decided to make the hospital into my chief medical dwarf's office, and had the chests/most of the hospital/etc. within the "office" space. Which apparently screwed up the normal hospital stuff, because no one would stock my lovely chests and bags.

As soon as I realized what was up and removed the office, everyone started ferrying supplies into the Hospital. So... make sure there are no rooms or whatever overlapping your hospital and messing it up?

Make sure you have some of each type of thread still, and not in the Hospital?

Just make sure your armies take salt. Lots and lots of salt.  ;)

You can make cages out of glass, yes. Just note that they're called terrariums - they get used for the same things (plus you can make them into aquariums for fish if you like), but the name change might throw you if you're not expecting it.

It might just be that they haven't had time to move their stuff yet. Are these clothes? That's what dwarves usually seem to leave lying about. Also make sure that they're not marked for dumping, or forbidden.

With the ores... if you want them to haul the ores themselves, you don't want the stockpile to take bars/blocks, you want it to take the stones. So make a stone stockpile, then remove the non-metal ones. The bars/blocks are the smelted products after the ore has been smelted in the furnace, which are then used in the weapons/furniture/etc.

With the goblin cages... make sure you take the dump designation off them, after you strip the gobbies?

Sometimes when a Mommy dwarf and a Daddy dwarf love each other very much...

.... One of them gets killed horrifically, throwing the spouse and child(ren) into a tantrum, getting more killed and spiraling down from there to take out your whole fortress....

It must be the long beard he's managed to grow and braid in those twelve years...

ETA: Nevermind, just checked my own game, a 6-month old baby has sideburns, long hair, and a very long double-braided beard. I guess they come outta the womb that way....
