I think they will cook with only liquid if there is nothing available, but I've never tried it.

I don't think so... I have a TON of dwarven syrup in my fortress, and keep getting the "Urist McPicky cancels (whatever the cooking job name is): needs solid non-rotten food item"

Only other thing I can think of..did you mass-forbid the charcoal accidentally somehow? Or have enough jobs in other workshops queued up that it's all more or less spoken for?

Possibly a hunter, since it'd actually get me out of the nasty cave filled with smelly water-averse dwarves and into the open air most of the time. And possibly working with animals, which I like, since I usually have my hunters as animal handlers/trainers as well.

Fisher would be another good choice - same outdoorsiness, not working with animals (except dead fish), but also not as risky.

Well, in the jobs menu at least, it's used to remove a dwarf ("creature" I assume) from the highlighted task. I assume it would be used for the same thing in other menus, though I haven't noticed/tried it there. It's greyed out if they are performing a task they can't be removed from directly, for whatever reason.

Except it slows them the hell down, which creates annoying chase scenes where dwarves run after goblins over half the map.

Yes, if they for some reason end up unconscious on the tile with a cage trap. Or if you have a cage built and set up as a room for justice, if they get punished for a crime they can get thrown in jail.

Well, coffins aren't always a help, if the dwarves die somewhere they can't be reached (or easily anyhow, I have some drown in the river from time to time, like idiots...) but memorial slabs should still fix the problem.

Also, you can "build" the cages that the goblins are already in, which doesn't seem to give them a chance to escape. I usually put the first one I catch in my little zoo like that. I guess you could make a little goblin prison that way if you wanted, by just building the cages as the goblins are caught...

Yeah, it gets a bit creepy when there's a corpse floating in the reservoir from a mistake in the construction, and the other dwarves are all happily drinking from it...

Did you toggle the Depot so that the trader is requested? If you press "q" on the Depot to check it and it says "no trader is needed," that means you're not "paging" the broker, so to speak. Make sure you press whatever letter it is, so that it changes to "Broker is needed at depot" or something similar.

What's been going on in my fort? While playing around with the new release, I've had four Moods so far. One mood resulted in a dwarf that wouldn't claim a workshop and ended up going insane and dying, the others have resulted in:

Ottanrodem, The Mindful Pelts, a one-humped camel bone hatch cover
Thikthogmukar Limniral, Drenchsad the Wispy Portent, a hematite mug
Zuglar Ilush, The Ship of Carnages, a bauxite crown

*sigh* (seriously, I never seem to get COOL artifacts. Others I remember in the short time I've been playing are another crown, a stone table and a glass portal. Ooo.)

The name of the mug at least is pretty cool.

I've got an indoor pasture (soilgrass, yum!) of about 30x30 (at first only my milker and shearer were allowed in there, for pathing purposes, but then I got stupid and put my furniture stockpile on the other side...)  and about 20 sheep.  None of them have had any "closeness" combat.

Are you sure? I didn't think mine were fighting either, until I hit "r" to check my reports. Yow. (After checking my logs I'm just surprised none of them have actually died of blood loss except for one cavy.) Also are you playing 3.21?

So yeah, I don't see my animals "spread out" as much (although they're supposed to) because they're too busy crowding on each other and fighting. *sigh*

(I also can't seem to get "grass" to grow very well underground. Le sigh. So much for my nice underground pastures.)

Ah, thanks, the clothes were actually belongings of a dwarf. Gave him his own bedroom, gave him cabinets, and he eventually put them away.

I figured out that the hospital problem was because I'd also designated it the office of the head medical dwarf, since he was a noble. I decreased the 'office space' so it only covered his chair and table and not the containers, and *whoosh* everyone starts cramming supplies in the chests. (And why is it that I can muse over something for days, not get anywhere, then post about it and suddenly get a bright idea why it's not working?)

As for the milk... tried the dumping/reclaiming, but it's still all in buckets. I can only assume I've just got too much stuff for barrels and not enough barrels to put them in, and the empty ones were already claimed or something but just not filled yet. :/ I'll just keep cranking out barrels and hoping to catch up.
