DF Suggestions / Change glyph option text
« on: December 23, 2022, 04:23:12 pm »
Please change the "Use Classic ASCII glyphs" to something like "Use Classic text glyphs".

There's no need to further perpetuate the misconception that Dwarf Fortress (any version) uses ASCII.

DF Suggestions / Steam Edition: UI focus needed
« on: December 11, 2022, 01:05:31 am »
I just started playing the Steam version but I find it really off-putting that I can unknowingly affect things under and apart from the top-level window. When I go to a menu to do something, I don't want to accidentally hit keys that change things underneath that window. I think the game needs to be more strict about limiting the keyboard to the active window.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / A castle without a door
« on: June 17, 2020, 10:48:45 pm »

Okay, at has a door... two of them. But they are floating in the air. :/

How do I get in? Jumping does no good because it's block walls and I can't hold on.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Identify constucted zones
« on: June 14, 2020, 07:37:21 pm »
I'm using 'b' build mode. I made a few structures and assigned some zones. However, now I'm not sure what I chose for each zone. Is there a way to identify them? All I can find is the name, which isn't very helpful.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Artifact Quest

I recovered an artifact for a Dwarven Fortress. How do I return it to them? Do I have to approach a certain person?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / 44.07 Lock-up
« on: March 25, 2018, 10:55:39 pm »
I have had very few crashes in DF, overall. However, in 44.07 I've run into a lock-up, twice now. I believe this is the first time I've run into lock-ups with the game. It seems unusual.

I'm not sure what I can report about it in a bug report because I don't see any specific pattern and once it's locked up, there's nothing I can do. I do notice that it seems to spin the CPU indefinitely, once it locks up. I'm running this in a VM, so I grabbed a snapshot of the memory and disk.

Is anyone else seeing lock-ups? Anything I can provide to help track down the issue?

DF Gameplay Questions / Destroyed codices, scrolls, etc.
« on: February 18, 2018, 10:14:26 pm »
I didn't notice this in-game but after I retired and went to the legends, I saw that many text were being destroyed in my fort:

Quote
In the early summer of 303, Nashra Tedaz, "The Attack of Incinerating" occurred.
In the early summer of 303, The Kingdom of Thrift attacked The Lush Pregnancy of The Immortal Zephyr at Budassault.
In the early summer of 303, The Meaning Of Tradition was destroyed in Axeheavy.
In the early summer of 303, Martial Prowess For Students was destroyed in Axeheavy.
In the early summer of 303, Prosperity And More was destroyed in Axeheavy.
In the early summer of 303, The Way With Scaldedblades was destroyed in Axeheavy.
In the early summer of 303, Metals Questioned was destroyed in Axeheavy.
In the early summer of 303, The Nuanced Glue was destroyed in Axeheavy.
In the early summer of 303, Life With Adhesives was destroyed in Axeheavy.

Any ideas? In all, I see 16 or more that were destroyed and I have no idea why or how. At first, I thought it might have to do with me retiring the fortress but it started way before that.

Do I need a scholar to protect them?

The Dwarf Fortress Pure Pack (DFPP) brings you the cleanest possible experience of this great game. This is Dwarf Fortress in its simplest and most pure form: glorious low-bandwidth text output and nothing more.

The pack comes with ten fonts that will give you an authentic text-mode display on a modern computer. Choose a DF-community font or go with a classic Px437 PC font, included from the "Ultimate Oldschool PC" collection.

The pureDF server has been preconfigured with SSH and version 43.05 of Dwarf Fortress! Using the df1 account, you can play the game from anywhere you have a computer with network access. You can even let others watch your game over the network by using the dfview account.

Requirements: an amd64 compatible computer
(this computer will become the DF server)

You can write the image using Win32DiskImager if you're in Windows.

Creative Projects / Masterwork Collection
« on: May 09, 2016, 05:42:23 pm »
In conjuction with the upcoming Dwarfmoot, I want to collect the best examples of artwork, based on DF stories.

The resolution needs to be high enough for me to print them in superior quality.  They will be on display at the venue.

For example, I've really enjoyed the paintings by Torgeir Fjereide and Börkur Eiríksson.

I don't know how many pieces the budget will afford but I'd like to get as many suggestions as possible.  What do you think?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Give it Back!
« on: January 19, 2016, 12:25:01 am »
During a busy time, several scholars were in my library, including visitors.  A caravan was trading, too and I bought a codex.  A human scholar apparently grabbed it from the bookcase on her way out.  I saw her leaving the fort with it!

I think my library is being robbed and there's nothing I can do about it.  The scholar I assigned wrote something and it seems be gone, too.

Would anyone care to take a stab at creating a logo for our 2016 gathering?  I'd like to have a logo on the website and such.

General Discussion / I Am Disappoint
« on: October 29, 2015, 01:34:14 pm »
I was listening to the Software Engineering Daily interview with Tarn and hit a disappointing segment.

Around 16 minutes, Tarn is describing the origins of Dwarf Fortress.  I really wanted to hear the end of this story, as he had just gotten to the primordial Dwarf Fortress - the idea that you would create a fortress and then later explore it "to get a high score".  The next stage would have been really interesting to hear about but the interviewer breaks in with "what language is Dwarf Fortress written in?".

That was kind of an abrupt change in topic and I didn't appreciate it.  It felt scripted in a bad way.  Furthermore, Tarn answers that it's a mixture of C/C++, the type that comes about "when you learn object-oriented programming, midstream".  The interviewer responds, "how did you end up using that mix?", which is pretty silly since he had just stated how.

I thought that the interviewer could have done a better job.  I haven't finished listening yet but I already ran into another point were he interrupts (or tries to).

DF General Discussion / Classics of Knowledge
« on: April 01, 2015, 03:18:25 am »
As usual, the DF dev logs are entertaining and interesting!  I'm really looking forward to libraries, the master-student framework, shared knowledge, poetry, etc. :)

We're told that In Pursuit of the Negation is "about proof by contradiction"... does the game elaborate on that? What about the other titles?

  • Injuries for Everyone
  • The Secret of the Path of the Moon
  • Do We Understand the Year?
  • Dissection: Before and After
  • Life with the Lever
  • Foraging Behavior for Students
  • Unusual Adhesives

Did anyone else see that list and want to know more about the books and the knowledge contained in them?

I'm curious what level of detail the game has for them, even if it's a simple phrase or one-line description of the contents / subject matter.

DF Gameplay Questions / Atom Smasher - How to Build
« on: February 25, 2015, 09:21:13 pm »
I built a single-tile bridge that was walled in on all sides. I opened the bridge and dumped stuff into the tile. When I closed the bridge, nothing special happened. Is there a trick to creating an "atom-smasher"? I have all these annoying bones that cause the dwarves horror and I want to destroy them.
