DF Gameplay Questions / Trap door

Hmm. You can't build cages on bridges, so there goes my hope of using a drawbridge as a kind of trap door for prisoners. Has anyone a method for dropping captives into a lower chamber or pit?

DF Gameplay Questions / [176.38c] No trade for you!

This is getting ridiculous. An ambush has appeared with every trade caravan for over a year of game time. The game log basically looks like:

A human caravan has arrived
An ambush, curse them!

The traders never make it through. This most recent time (second time with the humans) only the first two units entered the map before they were attacked and either killed or retreated. So, for the second year in a row, I don't get to trade. I've got a whole horde of junk that I can't use and I can't trade for anything I need because the traders just run off as soon as they get attacked. That means, of course, that my idiot tax collector will not get his stupid mandate filled and some poor dwarf will end up in jail.

DF Gameplay Questions / Chairs - Useless?

I made a table and a few chairs and made a dining room. Is there any point to put multiple tables together? I decided to try putting two side-by-side but I needed to move a chair.
I had the chair removed (it was put into storage space) and now I can't use that chair anymore (no "free" chairs)! Am I doing something wrong?

A snatcher showed up at my fort and was bashed by one of my dwarves before it got inside. I decided to take its things and trade them with the caravan that was at my fort. However, I could only access the items once I forbade them and then claimed them again.

Is this normal? It seems like they were already "claimed" since I had to forbid them and then claim them, but maybe that is how it's supposed to work?

So, I just started a new fortress and I notice that two of my dwarves already share a mutual grudge. Is there any way to find out why that is? I like the relationships page and that the dwarves start as friends or long-tern acquaintances. I'm curious if this is just random or if it is based on their personalities?...

DF Gameplay Questions / Projectiles across z-levels

Can characters fire crossbows/bows across z-levels (like down from the top of a tower or up at the top of a hill)?

Another matter is in adventure mode it seems as though the only thing you can really control is the approximate direction of the throw. My adventurers are apparently incapable of just chucking something one square in front of them (or any specific distance).

I started near the coast and I got a salt water warning. I assume the water at the beach is salt water - though there is no way to see if it is(!) - but there is also a river that has a mouth at the sea. I'm guessing that the river runs into the sea, so the water from that should be okay, right? Is the only way to check to build a well?

Two questions:

1> I have a goblin thief in a cage trap. Can I do anything with this chump?

2> I have some rats and bugs and lizards caged, which were caught in traps. Can I do anything with these things? Can they be eaten?

So if I can do anything with these pests, how do I go about it? I suppose it's possible for me to get the goblin brought into a death chamber and kill it.

DF Gameplay Questions / All work and no play

Excluding my military (they are always befriending each other), I have only a handful of dwarves that have any social life and they rarely hold parties. The vast majorioty of 150 dwarves don't do anything but work.

Anyone have suggestions for how I can make them party more often and make more friends? Does it help to cut down the number of meeting areas? Does it matter if it's a meeting hall, statue garden, or zoo?

DF Gameplay Questions / Booze barrels?

I designated a few small stockpiles where I wanted dwarves to place drink (plant) barrels. Of course, I used the custom stockpile option to select only drinks. The problem is, they stash empty barrels in these spots sometimes and then, even though there are barrels with drinks in them, they don't move them to these spots and swap out the empty ones (or fill them). For example, I have several booze barrels at the trade depot that aren't being moved because of empty barrels in my drink stockpiles.

Any ideas on this? Is it a bug? Am I doing something incorrectly?

Something that might be a bug:

I'm in adventure mode and there is a human town that appears to be abandoned. I tried taking a few items from a shop to see if angry people would come after me. Nothing. Is this normal? The town does have a large keep, but it's empty.

Something that is probably not a bug:

The second matter is probably just something that isn't addressed yet. However, I couldn't find any reports on this so I thought I'd add it to the post. It was an interesting oddity, anyway:

In Fortress mode, I tried building on a site sharing with three goblin towers that I had attacked in adventure mode. Apparently, I missed one goblin that was still alive. Otherwise, the site was exactly the same as in adventure mode.

However, shortly after starting, the goblin towers disappeared and the areas that would have been solid reverted to solid rock... trapping items and dead bodies in the solid mass. The areas above ground became empty, of course, and Items that were in higher levels remained floating in space. The one, living goblin guard, though listed as hostile, ran straight to my camp and then just hung out as if he were part of the expedition.

It would have been awesome to battle the towers... uh, assuming I hadn't killed everyone in them before. Maybe in future versions, hmm?  :)

DF Bug Reports / [176.38b] Sheriff: store item or save the dwarves?

I had a dwarf that went berserk because I couldn't find a turtle shell for her (in winter, mind you, when everything is frozen or snow-covered). My sheriff was nearby and I expected her to go tackle the loon. Instead, she hid with a group of dwarves who were cowering at the end of the hall. The game said that she "cancels Store Item" because of the loon. Surely, that can't be right? Shouldn't the sheriff automatically drop the store job and start cracking skulls? That berserk dwarf could have killed someone!

DF Bug Reports / Pathfinding and levers

I ran into a really annoying problem where my dwarf could not hook up a lever to a floodgate. I hooked up a lever and a floodgate but found that I had missed a step (no channel) so I removed the two objects and built new ones with a channel. But then the mechanic could never find the path for some reason. I tried removing everything in the path (doors) and digging out around the floodgate but nothing made any difference. Is this a bug or am I missing something? Should I post a screenshot?

DF Bug Reports / Export Local BMP - Black bars

When I export my fortress map to a BMP, I get three vertical black bars running down the map, blocking out huge parts of the fortress and everything else. Has anyone else had such a problem?

Apparently, bugs with wells have already been reported several times. My game keeps locking up.
